Hi guys! I am the woman that grew up IN that camper. Her name is/was Nelle Belle. My grandparents were the first owners of her. Then it was passed on to my father, then me, now you! That little silicone spot, in the lower corner of the screen door, yeah sorry about that! I wasn't old enough or tall enough to reach the door handle, so that was "Little Tammy's" door handle... I just want to wish you the best of luck with her! It's taken me a while to build up the courage to check out what all you've done with her. Like I said, I spent my entire life, in that RV. (I, myself, am a 1972 model.) I've got a lifetime of memories with Ole Nelle. I haven't watched the rest of your remodel, yet. But I hope she gives your family as many years of happy memories as she did for us! Wishing you safe travels and Blessed adventures!

1975 Coachman Leprechaun...That is the same motorhome my father bought in 1982 when he took us all on a trip across the country. So good to see there is still one on the road.
    Great motorhome!

I’m a mechanic that just retired and the noise from the engine compartment is either the donut gaskets where the exhaust pipes hook up to the exhaust manifolds or one of your exhaust manifolds are cracked which is common on those. Also you should buy a new tire for the spare because those 16.5’s are so hard to find, you need to go to 16 inch rims and tires later on you could do the rears then later do the front and buy the rims online at a store that sells commercial rims not at a tire shop they double the price on them

    • @Theendlessadventure
      @Theendlessadventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว +49

Thanks for all the insight and tips! We did get a spare tire, so as long as we don't have multiple blowouts at once, we should be okay for now. 😅We're taking it in tomorrow to get the exhaust system worked on and definitely hoping between that and adding some deadening pads, we'll get her purring instead of growling 😹

@Roberta McMunn anything you buy at 20k under you might have trouble with so starting at 4K now with $1700 in new tires is still a very good deal. Putting new tires on your rig this common even on RVs up to 20k ...... Thumbs up guys

It sounds like it needs an oil change and a new muffler if it’s clicking it needs a better oil changed and it probably needs the gaskets overhauled because if you got something leaking in the motor didn’t you’re gonna have to change him that thing inside the motor Yum I’m not sure about the timing belt but maybe maybe the cam cam shaft

Old motorhome guy here. We are now on our 7th one. You asked the question is "This a $4000 Mistake??" I would answer absolutely not. It appears to have been taken good care of. Two areas that you should always buy the best . . . tires and batteries. There are tons of "how to" videos on TH-cam so watch as many of the appropriate ones as possible. I would take the metal container off the front and mount it in the rear on a "Cargo Carrier". "Happy Trails"

I just bought the EXACT same RV model and year for $4500! Seemingly in awesome condition, all original interior, and only 4800 miles haha it never left the state of Wisconsin. Very excited to make some updates to the interior and engine plus adding solar as well but not doing any construction just paint and new floors and upholstery. Good luck!

Previous owner did an Amazing job maintaining it. Keep the interior, but you will probably need to update the fridge and stove. Not sure what features the vintage ones came with. Maybe a compost toilet if there is not enough Grey tank.

HaHaHa!!! I owned the exact same rig, (years ago) with the exact same fueling problems. If you have not already discover it, there is a air/back flow/whatever you want to call it, with the fuel tank vent system. I fixed it myself and on the road to boot, not being able to fuel up with constant tries to get a few gallons. If you cannot figure it out, have a mechanic fix it for you. I know, very frustrating not knowing how much fuel you have and not being able to fill it up. It will get progressively worse if you don't fix it. Cheers!

You will have lots of fun with that Coachman. Fun, and frustrations will abound. I also bought a COVID project camper a Class B Xplorer 280XLW. One thing you probably have done by now. Engine clearly has an exhaust leak. (Exhaust manifold not sealing as well as it should to the engine block) Not a big deal. Hard to get to and not a DIY thing. Mine cost a couple hundred to fix. You DO need to fix tho. Besides the noise, with the engine right under that doghouse, you can get exhaust fumes into coach. Also long term driving with an exhaust leak can cause exhaust valve damage. LOVE your new motor home and wish you well!

Great video. I bought a 1996 RV. I was clueless. Bought it for 5000. And did buy new tires brakes and other stuff like maintenance. Then cosmetic like redo the roof and minor fixes. Total another 5000. 10k. Which I knew it was to cost money to fix. When the guy wanted 10k but due to his divorce drop it to 5k. I regret it at first but after covid 19 we use it as a escape from the cities. We were moving. It save us alot of money and it was a very nice home. Now we are in our new house. I miss the RV living. It was great. I remember how great it was and bad things fixing stuff. Great video.

Dude I'm from Detroit if you purchase a vehicle and you're driving it home no matter where you are in the United States if you get pulled over you JUST tell police that you JUST purchased this and you're taking it home and you going to take care of it when you get there that's the best you can do they can't do nothing about it. Because COVID. I'VE BERN driving around my vehicle for 6 months with no plates and insurance and been PULLED OVER ... and had no problem got pulled over twice and told him I just purchased the vehicle and I have an appointment with Secretary State and they let me go there's nothing they can do because the COVID. As long as you got the title and receipt of purchase, that date... U. B fine!!! No worries....

Hi there, I see you bought an old RV.
We did the same and I want to over a few things we had done to ours.
We bought a 1985 C Class with 350GM motor in it. Like you the first thing we
did was buy new tires and rims because the 16.5 just was not available any
longer. This gave us safe tire travel
for 25,000miles and tires are still good after four years.
Motor wise we replaced the manifold gaskets because they were leaking. If you
don’t fix them you will have problems warping manifold. Any leaks in muffler
system will reduce power so fix leaks if any. Replace air filter. We also had
problems with gas filters because it was old there was rust in tanks and once
we used it for a couple of years that was much better. The gas filter is right
at the carb and takes a one inch wrench to take it out. I also put an inline
gas filter which makes it easy to change if need be.
I also replaced master cylinder for brakes. Replaced
Spark plugs. Also all the belts were bad and needed to be replaced. I may seem
like a lot but we still had a great time with it over the four years. Tomorrow
we pick up our newer RV but this one is an A Class 33ft. will we have more fun
in the new one? Not likely we had an awesome time in our old 1985 C Class
RV. I also replaced master cylinder for brakes. Replaced
Spark plugs. Also all the belts were bad and needed to be replaced. I may seem
like a lot but we still had a great time with it over the four years. Tomorrow

You are now in my wheelhouse. I used to sell and service RVs of about that vintage. If you need advice on the appliances (heater, fridge, water heater, etc.) let me know.

Get the engine sorted, as that is the heart of the Van as it sounds rough even for a diesel

That's the first thing on our list, no worries! It's definitely too loud, but we're hopefully we can get it sounding much nicer with some updates and additions to the exhaust system 👍

I wish you all the luck on your project. Keep in mind though that these can rapidly spiral down the money pit. Some things, like never ending rot, just aren't worthwhile or even feasible to repair. I rebuilt one long ago. Used it 4 years and finally ended up taking it to the dump. Just couldn't keep up with the leaks, rot and other repairs. I finally realized it was foolish to keep going. Bought a slightly newer rig and got to use it more than work on it. It was even still worth something when I traded it in. I guess my point is, just know when to throw in the towel no matter how much work and money you have in it.
    Good luck!

My late wife and I bought an older '78 Allegro for $6000, did some minor maintenance on it such as cleaning up the DIY wiring that had been installed. MY wife totally recovered all of the cushions for the smaller seats as well as the beds. We put a lot of miles on that old coach and used it as much as we could, even to taking three-day road trips on it. We finally sold it as we were in the process of moving and renovating our house and it was not getting used. Got every penny back that we had put into it years before. One thing I saw that reminded me of our coach was the exhaust problem. Ours had a GM 454 gasoline engine and the exhaust gaskets were shot when we got it. Roared like crazy until we had them replaced. After that you could hardly hear the engine. One thing we learned the hard way was to NEVER put General brand tires on a heavy RV! Two blowouts within a week on tires that looked fairly new! Had all six plus the spare taken off and replaced. A bit expensive but never had any more tire issues.

Found this video after trying to prove my mom wrong that the RV we had my whole late elementary/middle school years, did not have a bedroom in the back. 😆 We traveled all over the country in our Leprechaun and they are some of my best childhood memories. We even used to have sleepovers in the backyard with it! This was an amazing blast from my past!

Congrats on your purchase guys! This was the first video of yours I saw and I subscribed. My wife and I purchased a 1975 Class C motorhome a couple years ago, much like yourselves. It was a 1975 Itasca 24 foot motorhome, and like yours, it was a beaut. They're quirky, but when you get 'em working well, they're a joy to use. I'm excited to see where you end up with yours and the memories you create. As for a name, we named ours the "Quirky Turkey" because it had autumn colours and it was very quirky! BTW - I notice a compartment on the rear, looks like yours came with a generator? That is something you would want working in case you do not have power hookups. Ours did and being able to run A/C without power hookups was a real blessing in the summertime!
