- Playing D&D solo using the OSR system Old School Essentials. Using 1:1 time, I will generate a random adventure to hex-crawl and dungeon Crawl my way to riches.
Ep. 00 discusses the books used to and the plans going forward. Also rolled up some decent level 1 characters. #soloplay #dnd #osrgamer - เกม
Recommend listening to The Tale of the Manticore on your pod catcher of choice for a truly awesome OSR B/X solo experience.
The Dungeon Minister is also well worth your time 😏
Thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out.
Second this
It's so cool that I hear everyone nowadays in the solo RPG sphere talking about TotM.
I actually played an excellent B/X D&D campaign with Jon (the halfling thief Norrim Smallburrow) back in ~2020/2021 on roll20, great guy, I'm glad his show took off.
Amazing video, love it! Love your enthusiasm, and the quality and explanations are really good too. Will watch them all, and perhaps try solo'ing OSE myself too!
Old School Essentials Advanced actually is 1st edition, it's just that they've removed the copyrighted intellectual properties like names of spells and creatures such as Magic Missile and Beholders. I'm glad to see someone else making characters in the old 3d6 in order method, some of my favorite characters I made using that method.
Oh yeah, I love 3d6 down the line!
Well, from what I gather, it's ALMOST 1st edition. It's "inspired by" 1st edition, re-scaled to B/X and running on an engine of B/X. There are some neat original things there, too. I've been intending to run 1e for awhile. It's not as complicated as you get the impression it is, it's just Gary's writing style, lol.
Who's am I? I Kickstarted Advanced OSE, but ended up having to cancel my pledge and they said I didn't have to delete the PDF. I also have quite a chunk of the TSR library, and have been playing d&d in it's various incarnations since the mid-80s.
@@nrais76 yeah it’s basic + some great class features from 1E. I do plan on getting through the DMG eventually, but growing the channel is my priority at the moment. I hope you are enjoying the series!
OSE does not capture 1e. It does capture the lighter B/X.
Osric is 1e. OSE advanced is BX with aspects of 1e 'ported' to suit BX.
wotc is terrible
Awesome content highlighting solo TTRPG play! Glad some channels are doing this. I use solo-play to find the bugs, plot holes and dead-ends in my homebrew adventures. Can't wait for the new episodes. 👍🏼
Heck yeah, bro. Glad you like the series. It’s been fun to play. Stick around for more 👍
Subscribed hoping for more solo gaming 👍😁
Well, you have come to the right place.
Where did you get that HUGE OSE book??
😂 I live in China so shipping is very difficult. I bought the PDFs on Humble Bundle, and got them printed here. My buddy got his printed in A5, but I prefer the larger print.
@@Scutifer_Mike 😂 That's the coolest Old-School Essentials book I've seen. It's my favorite retro-clone but that small chonky book needs a larger brother.
Cool video! Excited to see your next one. I’m recently learning how to generate a dungeon. Hope I will see that video soon.
Just checked out your first video and really enjoying this. I’ve been playing since 1984-5. I started with the Mentzer edition Red Box. I love the game and have made a few videos but nothing worth showing. A “monotone mess” is how I’d describe it. You, however have done well. Mine is a work in progress. Well done.
Keep at it, my friend. It’s a fun practice and great expression of the hobby.
Greetings fellow BECMIer! I started towards the end of the 80's when a Finnish translation had come out. Tried some solo as well, but had no idea as a kid 😅
That was an 18 WIS guy, lol. Totally shortchanged yourself.
I’m not sure what you mean.
Loving your feed! Just a note on 1 to 1 time - in game time does not have to run one to one, but can pass as required for the game to move forward, so in this case you would need to be mindful if your party spends 2-3 days dungeon delving in the one session this will change the timeline for your other characters in downtime, unless you are playing west marches time, in which you'll need to stop adventures before they encroach on preset time, i.e don't play 5 days of adventuring if your party will be playing again in person in 4 days real time. you can do it 1 for 1 in both, but this can put an arbitrary stop on a game that is only half through etc. just food for thought. It's a weird concept the first few times you deal with it but then it moves so well, you wish you'd always used it
😂 yeah table time is not 1:1 lol. Can you imagine?
*CHA'ALT*
I follow you on X. Thanks for the watch man.
Hey, you’re in Beijing? Of course I’m way down south in Guangdong. I noticed some people mentioning tales from the manticore, I’d recommend Stories From The First Watch. A bit less video game type sound effects and quite immersive.
Yeah bro. Been in China now for 8 years. How do you like it?
@@Scutifer_Mike I can’t complain, been here twenty years now. Like all places, it has its ups and downs. How about yourself?
@@DiceTomb I like it in some ways. Only been here for 8. Nothing on your 20! That’s pretty impressive
Cool. Just getting back into D&D. I actually played in 1983 the last time lol! Thanks for the great vid.
Thanks for watching! Glad to have you back in the hobby! Nothing beats rolling dice.
Wow! Welcome back! The hobby is overwhelmingly rich these days. I hope you have an enjoyable comeback!
Cool video, love to find these types of Solo Plays. Shall be catching up with your library and hope to see more. Stay cool
Glad you liked it. Episode 1 is building the characters and in Episode 2, the delve begins! Let me know what you think!
Just found your channel. Suscribed. I also solo play OSR games (in Spanish). Old School Essentials looks great.
¡Gracias por el apoyo, mi amigo! ¿En qué juegos estás jugando?

@Scutifer_Mike speaking of systems. I was browsing at my local half price store and got a 25 buck good copy of OSE. Look forward to trying it. The art and layout are incredible.
@@rolanejo8512 that’s an amazing deal. The books are laid out so well. Love that system
I started at age 18 with D&D 4e. I also played and ran 3.5 and 5e until i found B/X and saw how fun playing D&D could be. I'm planning to run a solo game soon to refamiliarize myself with the rules after a long spell of no play.
Awesome man! Share your experiences.
I have a question and hope you can help me with it. After watching this channel i am trying to start my own old school essentials advanced fantasy game. After playing 5th edition for many years it feels refreshing, but i still got a problem. One of my characters is going to be a Drow Assassin, so i take the advanced player tome and get the hit dice and saving throws from the Drow tables. But then i look at the Assassins tables, and it shows me something different. e.g Drow had 1D6 hit dice, Assassin 1D4, also the saving throws vary. So my question is which table to use, the racial or the class?
It’s a good question. Since I play race as the class it hasn’t come up for me, but I read it as you take the tables, xp, and save from the class and add level limits, etc based upon race.
Cool! Just a heads up: OSE has officially made its way to China with the Classic Fantasy set. Looks like the Advanced Fantasy Chinese edition might be hitting the shelves next year. Could be interesting news to know.

I like the digest/A5 size of the OSE books I have, but that A4 sized book looks handy too especially for ease of reading and notes in the book.
Yeah I prefer the big print, but my buddy swears by the smaller book.
I just found your channel and plan on watching through your solo plays for some encouragement to give it a try with my system of choice. Usually I feel like about 5 players is the perfect balance for a party, but whenever my group drops down to 3 players the game never seems to run well. I've done a one on one with just the DM and a singular player before but never even considered solo play as an option until one of your videos came up in my recommendeds. Can't wait to see how this goes!
I’m glad you found the channel! If you have any questions, feel free to drop a comment. We have a great community of experienced gamers!
Read the 2nd edition DM guide to understand the 1E DM guide, it is better organized.
Haha yeah that’s good advice.
I am so glad tge algorithm lead me ro your channel! As a B/X OSE fanatic I'm super excited to watch this series. I too love the Mr. Wargaming videos so it's cool your doing the same but witg OSE! Also awesone your taking the brosr philosophy and applying it to B/X!!
That’s awesome to hear. You have come to the right place for OSE! Are you currently running any OSR games?
@Scutifer_Mike I run B/X with friends and family ,but since I'm a new DM I've been doing alot of B/X solo play so your videos are a great help and inspiration!I'm planning on binge watching all your videos!!lol
@@BX_Disciple I’m glad to hear it!
How did you get those oversized softbacks?
I bought the PDFs on humble bundle and then had them printed in A4. I like the larger font
@@Scutifer_Mike did you take them to a local printer or was it like Lulu or something. They look great.
