Why there's a ring of natural disasters around the Pacific

  • The belt of volcanic activity is called the Ring of Fire.
    Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
    The Ring of Fire is a band of volcanoes and frequent earthquakes that runs from New Zealand, up through Eastern Asia, across the Bering Strait and all the way down to the Southern tip of Chile. Volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis appear around the boundaries of the several, fast moving, tectonic plates that make up the region. When the plates collide, they create areas of volatility.
    The Ring of Fire sees more natural disasters than anywhere else on Earth, but what makes it particularly dangerous is that few countries are prepared.

    Correction: at 0:12, Mount Mayon is incorrectly placed on the island of Mindanao. It should be on the island of Luzon.

    Volcanos are a double edge sword. Because of their eruptions the provide some of the most mineral rich soil to grow crops on. So cities naturally formed around them.

    • @killernat1234

      Pikapetey Animations it depends, depending on the severity it’s can render land infertile for a long time

    • @davibourne3856
      @davibourne3856 6 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Indeed, soil is specially rich in magnesium and your body needs ot to absorb calcium.

    • @meowmeow5591
      @meowmeow5591 6 ปีที่แล้ว +149

      killernat1234 "depends" implies some volcanos make the land inhabitable while others dont....thats not true, they all do, but that's the point. The land is rich in minerals because of the volcano untill it isn't and it becomes decimated with ash and not rock and lava....untill it becomes rich soil again and the cycle continues. This takes a long time, but its how it works, how it brings new life

    • @azryafriadi3979
      @azryafriadi3979 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Pikapetey Animations agreed, people in the past, whose already reach the age of farming was tend to choose more fertile land, which only can be found around volcanoes, especially on Asia region. That is why the most highest populations around the world are in danger by disaster from the ring of fire. It is not wrong though, if they have a prevention system like japan or able to use it in more efficient way, for example: thermal energy

      Yes because the ocean is its own plate. The Atlantic Ocean doesn’t have as severe of a problem as the Pacific because there is no Atlantic Oceanic Plate, only continental plates separating. Additionally, the majority of faults in the Atlantic are in the middle of the ocean, not near the coasts.

    Been living in one of the most vulnerable area for earthquakes and volacanic eruptions and yes i've seen and felt it countless times. One of the main issue living in a developing country is not about the presence of early warning systems nor strict building codes, but the fact that rules and regulations are not emphasise heavily enough, thus rendering such codes and countermeasures useless. The lack of awareness of the very people that constantly face this issue is also hampering their development. I've seen numerous times when people didn't know how to react properly when facing an earthquake, even with basic instructions such as drop, dug and cover which is crucial when you live/work in a high-rise building.

  • @shyowtong
    @shyowtong 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    In fact, Taiwan does have an earthquake warning system, though it is not always working.
    We often receive warning massages which are ahead of the earthquakes for seconds, depends on how far are the tremors.

    If you are wondering WHY volcanos form (especially when oceans between oceans and continents):
    There are two types of plates; oceanic which is newer and more dense, and continental which is older and less dense. Continents rest on the continental plates and oceans rest on the oceanic plates (duh). When a oceanic plate and continental plate move towards each other, the denser oceanic plate goes under the continental plate. There, the oceanic plate melts from friction and because it gets pushed into the mantle (the layer of molton rock below plates) This then causes the pressure in the mantle to increase, so volcanoes are formed as the mantle has to relieve its pressure somehow.
    You don't get volcanoes at other plate boundaries such as continental to continental because then both plates rise up (causing mountains). But you can get volcanoes where two plates move away from each other as then the mantle is opened up.

And for Indonesia alone, at least one eruption occurs every year. However, the eruption of Mt. Sinabung is very unexpected 'cause the mountain has been dormant since 1600s

Pinpointing about Indonesian seismic activity is like talking about the weather (rain, cloudy, sunny), but for RIng of Fire, it's like talking about climate (the pattern of weather throughout time)

    I feel this clip could be expanded further into more interesting elements...like the volcanoes that are overdue eruption. The locations (and the potential damage/loss of life) ways certain countries prepare.. it was kind of a nothing video that was informative but finished abruptly with shitty outtro music and stock clips
