Doomsday is imo one of the best hiphop songs ever made, that beat is beautiful and the fact it’s an intro to Doom’s first album is really fitting, he almost predicts and knows the respect and legacy he was about to gain
Tick Tick is one of the coolest rap tracks I've ever heard, still haven't heard anything else like it to this day with the constant BPM swinging. It's so hypnotic
What a classic album. That chorus on "Doomsday" still hits differently now. May he continue to RIP. Dude had so many unreleased albums. Patiently waiting until his family sees fit. I can only imagine the pain. I've lost my mother recently, well 2021 but that shit doesn't go away. Only a bit easier to deal with. Still hurts. So a loved one, a partner, a father to your children, a best friend... I hope she and their children are doing ok.
fun fact: the scratching on "doomsday" is a sample from a song by Boogie Down Productions. blew my mind when i found out. mans so villanous, he had us thinking they were his own scratches..
it's amazing how much bob's vids are more enjoyable when he's having fun and liking the record. his reactions to DOOM are proof of that, i love how he's so into it! love your channel bob! keep it up!
DOOM has collaborated with some of the Wu-Tang members, he's made an official song with RZA, Biochemical Equation, and many with Ghostface Killah, including The Mask, Victory Laps and some others.
Doomsday's scratching is a sample of BDP's (Boogie Down Productions) "South Bronx" 33:20 KMD, the group he was in with his brother and Onyx, had an album ready to be released. The record label did not like the political undertones on the album, and it got shelved after Subroc died. I see this skit as a reference to that. Record company interference with the artist 49:15 A lot of Wu Tang members have their own variation of the Wu Tang symbol. For example. Meth's is the symbol flipped, GZA's is the symbol shaped as a G, etc. So switching like the Wu Tang symbol. Being different but the same. Oh and about Grimm. He was the first MF (Mad Flows), and he financed this album as an executive producer. They got into some real personal stuff because of that 54:14 Muslims don't eat pork. Pork is in gelatin. New Muslims might be unaware. "Some would debate, wait the fella ate gelatin" means that the guy of the story was new, did not knew the code
By the way, MF DOOM was part of the Nuwaubian Nation, which is a new religious movement that is an off-shoot of the Five-Percent Nation of Gods and Earth. A lot of rappers were part of the same religious movements including Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Rakim, Nas, Big Daddy Kane, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, LL Cool J. A lot of the terminology in 90s hip-hop is derived from the teachings of these movements "God, Allah, word is bond, dropping science, break it down, represent, do the knowledge, mathematics". They call themselves 5 Percenters because they believe 10% of people in the world are the elites and their agents, 85% of people are ignorant and being controlled by the 10%, and 5% are the ones who have gained the knowledge and have been awakened. They believe that black people are the original people of planet Earth and are therefore "Gods". They also have the "Universal Language" which is made up of the "Supreme Alphabet" and "Supreme Mathematics" where they attribute numbers and letters to words with special meanings. So a lot of times when you might hear seemingly random numbers or words (knowledge, wisdom, culture, cipher, born, god) being thrown out, a lot of the times it's references to the supreme alphabet and mathematics.
Nas was not part of that. He hung around with people that were so was influenced by it but he was not part of it. I have definitely heard him say that in an interview somewhere
The "only in America" line is one of the dopestest things DOOM have ever said. you really need to thinlk about that one. made me love DOOM as my favorite MC.
As someone who is that person, I can tell you: If your favorite rapper is MF DOOM, you're gonna love CZARFACE. First, DOOM did two collabs with them but they are very much doing "cartoon supervillain rap" in pretty much the same way. And they're extended Wu Tang Family so you I know I don't have to sell them to you further ;)
Would love to see you react to DOOM’s “Born Like This”. Probably his darkest record and most lyrical, it was his last solo album and it is a perfect way to go out.
@@iwtdkmp5081 No doubt about that, honestly amazing considering it was left over from the DANGERDOOM recording sessions. I just said “Born Like This” was the ending because it acts as a bookend for “Operation Doomsday”. On Doomsday DOOM tries to obtain world domination but is defeated by the Fantastic Four, but “Born Like This” sees him find success in his attempt at world domination.
Love seeing your vids! Especially the DOOM reactions, I’d love to see your thoughts on his Viktor Vaughn albums, his King Geedorah album, or Born Like This. Love your stuff man!
Will say that the beats on this album were kinda revolutionary for the time. DOOM was the first to really mine the 80s R&B and quiet storm scene for sampling. It was seen as a bit uncool before he started doing it. 18:21
"Switch like the Wu Tang Symbol" is referencing the fact that each Wu member has a modified version of the Wu "W" as their logo. For instance, Method Man's logo is the W upside down. Genius is rotated 90º with an extra piece to make the descender. Inspectah Deck is also a rotated W to make an "E" in Deck.
hey bob! hope you get a chance to read this a few weeks ago, i translated Sobrevivendo no Inferno by Racionais Mc's in its entirety, 26 years after its release. the most influential brazilian rap album of all time. it became an obligatory read for college tests all over the country, was gifted to the pope by the mayor of são paulo, sold 1.5 million copies (and god knows how many pirated versions), and in almost three decades, had never gotten a full translation to english. but now it has. i welcome everybody in this comment section to take a peep at it, especially if you enjoy 90's rap -- "tô ouvindo alguém me chamar", 4th track of the album, is by far my favorite one. an 11 minute masterclass in writing that keeps you hooked from the very beginning until the last syllable; "diário de um detento", 7th track, inspired by the carandiru massacre, is a punch in the gut that does not hold back or sugarcoats any of the dirt of the penitentiary system; "capítulo 4, versículo 3", 3rd track has a beat that could change a man's life this album is great. it's raw, it's real, it doesn't hold back. don't go into it expecting clever metaphors or complicated verbose language. what has to be said is said, and it's said the way it is. please, i'd love for any of yall to check out and give a chance to brazilian rap. it would be a pleasure i've sent you an email with a pdf of all the translated lyrics if you ever want to check that out!
As far as the music videos are concerned for Doomsday. No official videos in the original run. Rhymesayer records did a fan music video contest years after the release and the winners of the contest are the current music videos. Also you should consider reviewing "Black Bastards" by KMD (dooms original rap group)
In addition to just being a flat out incredible album, the backstory to this album is amazing too. His brother Sub Roc passed away, KMD was dropped from their label... leading Zev Love X to disappear and become a recluse. Years later he re-emerges from the depths as a metal faced supervillain and the MF Doom persona is born. This album and the 12" singles leading up to it are where this all started.
Makes me so happy that you appreciate MF Doom's music and lyrics there are a number of albums that you still need to go through that he's done I can't wait for you to experience them keep up the good work brother
32:01 I think this is him telling a story about sampling and sample clearances whilst also using samples to tell it. Hilarious and genius. At the end I think it’s talking about getting samples cleared and it being expensive to do, as well as legal trouble if you don’t get it cleared.
Watching you enjoy this brings me back to when I first heard this album. DOOM holds a special place in my heart and I wish everyone could listen to this record
if you ever can, please give I Hear Voices Pt.1 and 2 from the expanded version of this album a listen, they're up to the heights of the best tracks in the original tracklist
Apparently when this came out DOOM worked on some of this at DJ Stretch Armstrong’s pad using his equipment. Stretch Armstrong thought he was nuts for sampling rap songs because people didn’t do that back then. He also worked on some of it around the “CM Crew” in Manhattan. People like The Beatnuts and Heiro would visit Kirious’ pad and while they were in there partying and acting wild DOOM was off in the corner working on this masterpiece and participating at the same time. From what people that was around said about him, I got that they thought DOOM would’ve made this album even if it never came out. Making these songs was like breathing for DOOM. Good thing for us it did come out along with everything that followed! About the mask…….he only wears it while he performs or is “in character”. A lot of times he hangs out at venues he performs without the mask and no one knows it’s him. Essentially he’s a rock star with the mask and without it he’s an every day person, and I think that’s the perk of using the mask.
1:54:33 One way to find out would be to check the two KMD albums he did with his brother, when he still went by Zev-Love-X 😁th-cam.com/video/3mHBiu_JOOw/w-d-xo.html
MF DOOM goes by many names his first work was in a group called KMD and he also goes by other names like victer von DOOM and king Gedrea cant spell my bad
This album is pure HipHop genius! It helps to appreciate the samples from previous HipHop and R&B classic music DOOM used. Such as how he mashes up Sade and BDP. Only a HipHop genius could pull that off.
I love that you see the bittersweet tone in ‘?’ on first listen. I’d recommend the music video which actually shows that pic of his brother he’s talking about
I think there's an early demo of either Gas Drawls or Dead Bent you can find under his earlier alias "Zev Love X" that has him sounding even younger. It's weird to hear the song that way.
MF DOOM is one of the few classic 90’s-early 2k’s rappers who have actually stayed relevant till today. It just shows how timeless and formative his stuff is.
I love how u heard rhymes like dimes. . You proceeded to react like a human and be like ok. this is nothing like i heard and proceeded to act accordingly. Its beautiful to hear with no refrences. You should listen to ‘I Hear Voices’. It replaced Hero vs Villain on every version of the album which came after the first pressing. It’s required listening if you are a big fan.
although it would be call to do the whole diss track thing in one video, going along as it happens is part of the fun of it + not even for views but you are such a good reactor when it comes to lyric analysis so it would be perfect
The “change like the Wu Tang symbol” I always took as the W changing forms of individual artists like Gza it was made into a G and with Method Man the W symbol changed into an M. Within all of that is Grim’s metaphor.
Please listen to king Geedorah - take me to your leader, I find it one of the more obscure mf doom album and it has one of the more experimental sounds that mf doom rapped on and produced which has become one of my favourite albums, if your still craving to listen to mf doom please check it out

You should listen to ‘I Hear Voices’. It replaced Hero vs Villain on every version of the album which came after the first pressing. It’s required listening if you are a big fan.
This was reallyyyyyyy needed
MF DOOM - Born Like This; One of my favorites albums
DOOM as King Geedorah. Check it out.
As a surfer from Byron Bay, Australia, I never thought I would hear Bob mention the sport haha!
although it would be call to do the whole diss track thing in one video, going along as it happens is part of the fun of it + not even for views but you are such a good reactor when it comes to lyric analysis so it would be perfect
I had to stop mixing my tracks for this!😂
The “change like the Wu Tang symbol” I always took as the W changing forms of individual artists like Gza it was made into a G and with Method Man the W symbol changed into an M. Within all of that is Grim’s metaphor.
Switch like the Wu Tang symbol. The W used in the Wu Tang clans logo. Gets changed for each person's solo album. Method man has a M. The Gza has a G.
Please listen to king Geedorah - take me to your leader, I find it one of the more obscure mf doom album and it has one of the more experimental sounds that mf doom rapped on and produced which has become one of my favourite albums, if your still craving to listen to mf doom please check it out
I loved this album when my good friend. who put me on to DOOM in 05 he played me Mmm Food I brought Operation Doomsday and Mmmm food so imagine, Bob listening to those two albums back 2 back and just being holy shit who is this man and why he saved hip hop the Villain really did say what he said he save it. At least for a hip hop fan as myself. Rest in Peace Gerald a.k.a George for putting me up on Metal fingers DOOM and R.I.P Daniel Dumile The Villain
The song Doomsday is such a good introduction for the character of MF DOOM
Thanks bob legendary album !!! Always love watching the reaction’s !
TNT= tactical narcotics team. It’s been speculated that TNT would throw handcuffed suspects out of a moving van and claim that they were trying to escape
take me to your leader is so good you gotta listen
Please react to King Geedorah Take Me To Your Leader it’s my favorite album that MF DOOM did 🙏🔥
In the Bay "hella" is still going strong, will probably never leave
"love not for who you think I am , but who you want me to be" ❤😂
Bob you might wanna listen to the disstracks now, maybe view it with the rest of us a fan of hiphop. You said it yourself that you struggle with understanding the references and what goes on in the culture. Now would be the perfect time to see what being in it feels like. All love
It’s done nvm
"DOOM is my favorite hip hop artist so far"

Bob explaining a collect call is pure entertainment., 😆
Bob if you want some more DOOM breakdown stuff, check out the recent season of dissect podcast, every episode is a detailed breakdown of a different DOOM track . Could not recommend it enough
People know who Doom is, he's Zev love X of KMD. His mentor is MF Grimm and his influence is Ghostfacekillah It was just shocking to come up with such a scheme because although he's underground as KMD the mask pushed him beyond popularity he asked for.
King Geedorah album next 👾🦕🐊
I love your doom videos! Please do born like this next please!!!
this is the most times bob has clicked on the annotations 😂
