  • More than 100 street vendors in Santa Ana have been shut down for selling food “unfit for human consumption” and for lacking proper permitting, the city said Tuesday.
“While enjoying meals from street vendors has become popular, we cannot allow unsafe food conditions to endanger public health,” Mayor Valerie Amezcua said in a news release. “I applaud City and County staff’s efforts to protect our residents.”

This isn't Mexico! This isn't El Salvador or wherever... this is America!! We have laws here to protect people. No one is above the law !! If you can't follow basic sanitary guidelines, then you shouldn't be a street vendor ; period!!

I worked fast food and I worked in a restaurant. And there were all kinds of laws and rules we had to follow. We had to have hot soap and Hot water .Hot food had to be at a certain temperature and cold food had to be at a certain temperature .We had to have a cutting board for meat and we had to have a separate cutting board for fruit and vegetables. When we had a buffet we had to have a sneeze guards. Straws had to be individually wrapped. I see the street vendors storing food in igloos. I see the vendors and the customer standing over food talking. No soap no hot water. I see several violations with the street vendors. I don't see how they're allowed to exist. Restaurants would be fined or shut down doing the same exact thing.

At the end of the day, they should as sanitary as food establishments in buildings. It's not fair for restaurants who have to deal with all these health codes and you have mom and pop vendors in little makeshift carts that's selling food that's not being either properly cooked or fruits and veggies that are not being properly fridge rated, especially in this Cali heat and most likely non BPA plastic containers sitting out in the sun baking and getting spoiled.

I live in San Fernando Valley in a lovely, fairly peaceful, strictly residential area.
A street vendor set up a stand, along with the standard rainbow umbrella that all organized vendors use, on my parkway property and there's nothing I can do about it.
    Requests to move are ignored.
Now our family unwillingly endures more noise, more traffic, more accidents caused by people who stop "just for a minute "to buy from the vendors, lowered property values, way too many strangers stopping in front of our home and, of course, the eyesore of a business running in our front yard.
Our individual property taxes went up 87% this year!
Before that outrageous increase they were also extremely high, as most homeowners experience in San Fernando Valley.
It is absolutely unfair to let people sell food directly in front of homes in residential areas.
There must be laws to stop this, laws which require vendors to remain in commercial areas only, or soon the valley will be another Tijuana or mini Mexico, which is the agenda held by vendor organizers.
These are not mom and Pop small corner businesses, these are highly organized vendor stands with most of the profit going to others, not the individuals who sell at the stands.
I also empathize with businesses who pay massive sums to rent a location, comply with all legal health requirements/inspections, only to have competing stands pop up right in front of their brick and mortar establishments.
It's not only in Los Angeles, it's spread throughout California now. Even Santa Barbara.
As politically incorrect as it seems, I do not want to live in Mexico.
California's charm is degenerating not evolving for the better, and it's truly sad.

Many years ago I lived in Watts/South Central LA. On one side the neighbor had junk cars, on the other side the neighbor had a backyard Corn on the Cob cleaning, cooking and every morning lots of small vendors with shopping carts and pots or pans would come, pick up the cooked corn and I assume, sell it on the streets. The rats ran between both houses, the junk cars for hiding and the food/corn/garbage for food. If you ever saw that you would NEVER buy food off the streets.
