Lucy, Thanks for this helpful video. I make custom corsets for men. Most of my male clients are very communicative, but I often find that I have to guide them through managing expectations. Many of my male clients are big and tall, with health problems, and often a lot of back pain and posture issues. I have been doing all of my fittings virtually, using zoom lately, which has been very helpful during the pandemic. My male clients often tend to wear their corsets hard, so after a few years, their corsets need some repairs, like a new zipper, or some of the bones at the bottom front may have poked through. Often they want and expect a garment that lasts forever. I tell them there are pros and cons to all the different materials, and no materials last forever. Corsets don't just hang on the body like other garments. They are more like structural engineering, like a bridge. Not only do they have to look nice, they must breathe well, reshape the body, be comfortable, alleviate pain, stealth, etc., etc. If, for example, I were to make a corset out of Kevlar, with the expectation that because it's bullet proof and abrasion resistant, the client may sweat profusely when wearing, it, rendering the corset too miserable to wear. So a compromise must be found in a less durable material that breathes well, molds to the body, and looks nice under clothing. As a corsetiere, I explain that every single body is unique. There are so many factors for a corset maker to consider. Each custom commission is a learning experience both for the client, and for the corset maker. I often spend as much time trying to educate and explain these complex variables as I do actually making the corset. Like you said, communication is so important, and it's a two way street. It is so helpful when a client comes in with knowledge of the process, and previous experience with other corset designers so I don't have to spend as much time educating them about the basics. The client-designer relationship, for me, often spans years. I love my male clients. I do invest a lot in guiding them through the process, and I always do the best I can to exceed their expectations. That said, expectations must be managed because corsets are not magical. Human bodies are complex, unique, ever-changing structures, and designing a corset that does everything perfectly, and lasts forever, is not necessarily possible, even when both client and designer do everything to the best of their abilities. I love your videos. Thank you for including Electra Designs in your page for male corsets. I have received many clients who found me through your site.

You bring up so many excellent points here, Alexis! Thank you for taking the time to explain the individual nuances of each commission as well as the overarching themes of working with male clients. It's a pleasure to recommend your work. 💖

@@LucysCorsetry Thank you so much for all of your very informative videos and articles. Many clients come to me with pretty strong knowledge base about corsets and the process of commissioning a custom corset because they have watched your videos. I often refer people to your videos and articles to help inform them. Your work saves me so much time, and is a huge blessing to the corsetry community as a whole.

Five...thousand? I now feel exceedingly fortunate that my various experiences were as good as they were. On one hand, part of it was luck, living twenty minutes away from cis male corset-makers (Innova Corsetry) who helped make my first experience with custom corsetry be as smooth as it could possibly be. And yet, my most recent and most demanding corset, by The Bad Button, also turned out wonderfully even with none of those advantages in play. I would not have imagined someone having as much trouble as Scott describes. It sounds terrible.
One thing I would like to note, however, is that in my case, even with perfectly fitted corsets, it took quite a bit of time for me to really learn how to wear them. Most guides are designed to be used by cis women, making them less than useful for the cis male figure, and so there was a lot of trial and error involved before I was able to figure exactly where they're meant to sit in order to be worn comfortably. My current everyday corsets feel like a dream, but if they're even half an inch off, my body will complain about it vociferously, even though the measurements are all technically correct.

This may be a slightly controversial piece of advice, but I think it is beneficial to choose a corset maker that has a similar body shape/composition as you.
There are some nuances in fitting a corset that I believe corset makers need to be experienced on themselves to fully understand.
Of course with enough trial and error, a good corset maker could eventually develop their patternmaking skills to accommodate male bodies, but unfortunately male corset wearers are rare, so most corset makers don’t have the chance to hone this particular skill set.
So I would suggest choosing a male corset maker, like House of Canney, or Innova Corsetry.

Controversial as it might be, you do have a point - and not just for male corsetiers. Larger bodies compress and displace differently from leaner and muscular figures; those with short torsos, swayback, or scoliosis (especially a tight side and a pliable side in terms of musculature) might need special details in patterning compared to those who don't have these. Someone with hypermobility might have the ability to cinch to dramatic reductions but know that it's not necessary (or wise) to push the ribs to their limit for proper structure support... A maker with personal experience in these and the ability to experiment extensively on themselves will have a knowledge, skill and communication advantage with clients who have similar bodily considerations.

@@LucysCorsetry me having a primarily barrel shape at 220lbs 5'9" in height, i think my body is un-corsetable. waist is 38, low hip 41, bust 41, front busk 10 to 11 inches. every corset i've tried sticks out profusely at the bottom, but any longer and it is hard to sit down without my legs pushing up the corset, any shorter and my stomach rolls up the bottom of the corset.

Thank you so much! They were a gift, custom made by another corset TH-camr, SilentSongbyrd! I believe only 4 or 5 of these were ever made. The knobs of the busk are pinheads to give you an idea of the scale!

Hi Lucy , If 'Scott' would appreciate my help , I would be happy to share with you the Etsy link where I purchased mine several years ago . Although it is not bespoke , it was custom made and the fit is amazing . Totally great support and being cotton it is extremely comfortable to wear . I provided my measurements and about a month and a half later received my corset . It is a ' long torso' style and used for support or even just to look and feel -- put together . Although it has its areas that are not perfect , it is far and away more comfortable than the typical OTR corset -- even if the ' off the rack ' corset is used upside down . SO now you know my OTR corset !! LOL , and would be happy to help . Thanks for your video , Gary --aka Dreamer 

Very interesting video, as always. Though I'm technically a man, I usually buy corsets designed for women since they fit my figure better--I've never been "straight up and down" like people claim men are supposed to be. But really no one has the same body type anyway. I hope Scott finds something that works for him

Dude, I found you again. Sweet. Same here. I'm a man, but I buy women's corsets. I need curvy corsets, or it won't cinch my waist at all. My first corset had this problem.

i am looking into getting a corset that is custom fitted, but i cant find places in ATL that do custom fittings. Do you know of any places that can do virtual fittings? ( i know its not ideal, but its my only option, since i'm not willing to travel outside of ATL area for a fitting)

I know that House of Canney is in Atlanta, but they're super busy with big performer commissions as of late - even still, it might be worth messaging and asking what their prices and turnaround time might be.

I'm a man that wears corsets(longline underbust), but am lucky enough to naturally have more female proportions. I'm not heavy, so it isn't due to "fluff" either. As a result, I shop women's OTR corsets instead of men's.
