  • Key Features: This garden features a large wetland which collects and filters rainwater from the 2.4-hectare site. The wetland was primarily designed as a habitat - a haven for birds, frogs and insects - but also offers recreation and ornamental value and creates a wonderful place for swimming.
Three zones were created in the large dam by digging different depths, creating habitat for a range of plant and animal species. Logs and boulders were then added to the deeper sections to form underwater structures for shelter. The edges of the ponds were planted with a range of marginal and aquatic plants such as:
Tall Rush (Juncus procerus), which stabilises the edges, provides habitat for frogs and grows to about 2m
Common Spike-rush (Eleocharis acuta,) which is great for providing nesting material for birds and is a smaller reed, growing to about 60cm
Milfoil (Myriophyllum ) to provide habitat for frogs and create shade
Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), which has beautiful pink flowers and grows in both boggy and garden conditions
Nardoo (Marsilea spp.) - a floating plant with clover-like leaves that’s great for filtering out nitrates.
    Tips:
Covering up to 70% of the surface of your pond with plants reduces the amount of sunlight entering the water and reduces algal growth
Reeds and aquatic plants such as nardoo remove nutrients contained in waste water
Creating different water depths allows you to grow lots of different plants, and offers different habitat zones for wildlife. This works equally well in small backyard ponds
Try and use indigenous plants whenever you can
Plants and water attract biodiversity, no matter how small!
