    Thank you so much for coming to help us for the day Sophie, you were AMAZING!! You definitely have the skill needed to build your own boat, but it is hard being away from the water for such a long period of time. Can't wait to see what you two come up with for Polar Seal II. 😘

    I’m just answering the thumbnail question. You don’t need a boat work project to make your story compelling to watch. That’s MJ’s story. You have your own story to tell. I am so ready to see you explore the NE and Canada.

    I am old(er) and as such, have seen a fair amount of water flow under my bridge.... I have repeatedly been told " that isn't the way it is done" or " I could never take the risks you have" or "you are NUTS if you think you can do that"...... and yet so many people have done so many amazing things because they looked back at these people and told them to piss off... I have massive fear of failure, and yet I also have taken many leps of faith, including the one I am on now.... fear keep people from getting out of the box, and as it has ever been, that is for for them, we need people int he box to hold things down that need to be. But, we also need people that cut holes in the box and climb out, as scary as that may be ... I did a ton of research to get prepared for this leap... I like-a you, so you like-a me?

    I have followed MJSailing for the last 2 years as the build their boat. I am amazed at their commitment to the project... But I would NEVER take such a project as that. Fiberglass dust for 3 or 4 years... no thank you. But watching you go through a day with them has given me much better perspective on MJ's efforts. I appreciate them that much more!! Thanks. (PS: if it had been Acorns to Arabella, or Tally Ho, or Ran Sailing (all mostly wooden boat with only some fiberglass) than maybe).

    Sophie, I had to chuckle throughout this video at your approach to the tasks that were assigned to you. I myself have never worked with fiberglass and haven’t been lucky to glass overhead. I think I would have thought of trying to build a catamaran using a kit, but for me it is not a realistic endeavor. Like you, I will look for a boat that will closely meet my needs in the used market. I have to ask, where did you find those spectacles? They are very impressive.😊

    Wholehearted for the dream! Naysays are everywhere, I’ll leave it there. Lol. It’s a tricky decision but with the project management and drive you both demonstrate in every video I am sure you can tackle anything you set your mind to. I’ve got ptsd from a house gutting and rebuild I’ve just completed which blew my budget due to delays (that good ole supply chain thing) and some health issue that elongated timelines quite a bit. So my only idea would be to budget for at least 60% over initial budget of both $ and time. Let’s just say I’ve learned a lot. Now I just want to sell up and hit the ocean!!

    My boat was built from a kit (complete hull but needing fitting out) by the previous owner - the boat is only 25 feet long but it took him 18 months of every scrap of spare time he had. One thing was very clear - while he did save some money, the amount saved per hour of labour was pitifully low. You might do much better by taking a land-based job and using the pay to buy a complete and finished new boat. Or, if you like DiY and want a somewhat customised boat, find an older boat which is still fundamentally sound, and bring it up to seaworthy condition. Some of the older designs haven't been excelled in terms of practical seaworthyness (so I am told).

  • @jasonmcintosh2632
    @jasonmcintosh2632 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I built a 18' fishing boat from fiberglass and plywood. I consider it to be a "spiritual" activity.
    That said, I have a lot of reservations about this built. First, it's going to take A LOT of time. I'm thinking 1000's of hours, but I don't know how complete of a kit it is. I assume they have to source at lot of their own hardware locally. Time consuming and expensive since you're buying retail. A tongue-in-cheek surface finish quality is measured in terms of "distance away you have to be for it to look nice". Getting a 1 foot finish takes a lot of work (but I didn't use peel ply... : ( ).
    Second, you REALLY need to make sure you build it right. All of the joints need the right amount and type of fiberglass, etc. I believe any first time builder of a particular boat will make some mistake that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Or at least while they own the boat.
    Finally, this boat is HUGE! It's a damn house on the water. My own personal belief is that you should have as small of a boat as possible. Apparently they have plenty of sailing experience and they know they really want this monster.

I thought you did a great job given that you hadn't done it before, absolutely agree with you at the end - there's always going to be people telling you not to do it and many of them might know how to do it better which you can listen to if you're wise but they're not there doing it so... good work with the prismatic glasses!

    A DIY project, whether car, plane, or boat, will provide exceptional gratification - FOR YOU. For those of us that can only watch, we need the project to be something not already posted so we can pickup some new insight. For example, SV Basic is a honeycomb/glass Catamaran; Ruby Rose is a factory-built semi-custom Cat with constant on-site supervision. RAN III is a wood/glass laminate monohull. Distant Shores is a custom aluminum monohull. To add max value, your project needs to add broader insight and not just piled higher and deeper. Maybe a solar power cat.

What a huge catamaran your friends are building and the finished price I am sure will not be inexpensive, perhaps $500,000 or close? Have you considered a Wharram design, a lot easier and a fraction of the price of that big kit boat. Anyway, the very best of luck with your own project. SkipRay, Kerry.

They called it like Riding a Bucking Bronco, and that is a better descriptor than my Corkscrew Effect tbh. I seriously Wonder How Anyone Can Be Serious About Having a Catamaran tbh. I noticed that effect pretty quickly when in one, looked at Trimarans instead, and they were such an improvement, I almost bought one, then looked at the issues and extra expense of keeping one, and it was beyond my budget, so have stuck with Monohulls ever since. Beneteau, and other companies, buy their basic supplies in bulk. There is hardly any comparison between buying for one backyard boat, and a private deal with trainloads of stainless cables, fiberglas paint, and bundles of propeller shafts banded with iron straps. The homebuilder advantage is lost.

  • @brownnoise357
    @brownnoise357 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Serious question, why a Catamaran ? A Huge increase in annual Costs for what ? Open Areas to get thrown around like a Ballbearing in a Pinball Machine, plus for me anyway, a not uncommon Corkscrew Motion that really messes me up. If you need more room, remember a Monohull under 50ft has the lowest Annual Running costs, and Finances are looking to be getting Much tighter Globally, very soon now, and as fundamentals are far worse than 2008, and remember the number of Boats Scuttled and given away, as so many people could no longer afford to keep them, or even pay mooring fees. Things are about to change Big Time. So please think carefully and Don’t Rush into things right now. Personally as you have Polar Seal, I’d stick with her, and stack away as much cash as possible for the rest of this year, and watch carefully how things pan out. ❤ and Best Wishes. No no no no nope... Madness to build a catamaran; years of hand to the grindstone - and the MJSailing team are genius people as well - but not skilled laborers. They are taking 10? times longer than pros with professional humidity controlled workspaces. Boats are made of chemicals - environmentally sensitive chemicals, plastics, etc. Its like any construction - crazy workload times 10. Factoring in youtube revenues makes it a gamble at best and a walk away loss at worse. Have you looked at venture or the aluminum cats (I cant recall the youtbe channel on this). Great boats - zero chemicals.
