OK. The idea is perfect. For me, rotate whole app 90° clockwise, control panel on the bottom of each column, remove bottom row with text / graphics, add buttons with DTR and RTS for device reset, add control for number of bits, parity and number of stopbits (8N1), to save some space - the selection of the visual style (font, size) can be common for all column, add selection for background color and font color, but again -> good idea...
