The gleaming, stainless-steel Starship rocket and its Super Heavy booster, which together stand 400 feet tall (122 meters), were filled with more than 10 million pounds of liquid methane and liquid oxygen propellant during the recent launch dress rehearsal, which was performed at SpaceX's Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach in southern Texas.

the fact they could record live reentry is incredible
I want to know more about that. It would seem like anything you hang off of the booster at those speeds will cause drag/friction etc. And further it seems like it might compromise the booster's structure. I know zilch about how these things are constructed and I don't even play a rocket scientist on tv, but I'm still intrigued.

@@SuperAd1980 What they mean is that they got to see some of the glowing plasma (which was really cool to see) and 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 it reentered the atmosphere, just didn't make it down in 1 piece.

The only bad thing I have to say is that we have to wait another 2-3 months for another launch and to witness MORE!!!
The booster might have had a successful soft splashdown if it came in through the atmosphere at a more shallow angle. This would’ve created more atmospheric drag, thus slowing it down more. I’m sure SpaceX already has plans on how to do it better next time. Amazing footage and incredible job by SpaceX!!
Watching that reentry as it happen was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen. Almost as beautiful as the fairing reentry video from a few years ago.

@@philipthecow Well, I can't discredit decades of technological advances made by them. But they still didn't solve the very problem that made the government cancel space programs: reusable boosters and rockets to diminish costs. That was something that SpaceX pioneered for heavy loads. All I am saying is that I am very happy with the return of said programs through Artemis, but that wouldn't be possible with the current budget, if not for SpaceX's little boost.
...Who am I kidding? The US has far enough budget for space programs, they just prefer to dump it all in the military.

Booster made over 4000kmh on descent, I think they need to find the way to start slowing down gradually a lot earlier, this should reduce the overall stress on the crafts structure, if they will be reused obviously.
Well, given that Space X has been doing this for 20 years now, I would assume the rapid descent was allowed on purpose to test the overall stress on the structure and it's control systems. It's a golden opportunity for it. Since its a throwaway prototype (with more launches in the pipeline), you want to expose and learn all the extremes you can.

I know, ridiculous to see them keep trying to land a rocket, on a barge no less. They should learn from the real rocket companies like ULA.
The images from this test mission, The Raptor' performed fairly well, up until it didnt unfortunately. The data is what can be gleaned and the studies can help to build an even better starship with all safety concerns are for the eventuality of a manned crew aboard.

40:53 Why did the image in the telemetry show Starship flip 180* when we could see Starship hadn't changed orientation?
This is just a guess, I haven't looked at trajectory, but if it crossed into the southern hemisphere or something like that, maybe the data makes it look flipped
It's totally fake. Just like the moon landing. Lol
@@lachy6645 That's possible, but I realized what's more likely is the ship rotated on the z-axis instead of the x-axis or y-axis. The 2-D image can't display that rotation, so it simply flips the image once the 180* turn is complete.

My brother David was up at 4am and drove about 60 miles to South Padre Island from Weslaco for the launch, it's Dave's 3rd mission. Hundreds of cars with grid lock after the launch, be patient. He said it was worth it again! If you are into this you must see it LIVE. Go to SPI and take a right after the Bridge and head to Isla Blanca Park very early and pay about 12 bucks then find a parking space and walk towards the famous SPI jetties. Bring a jacket it's always nippie in the early morning and stand in awe of the beautiful water, the salt in the air, and the Rocket only 5 mile away.
A tad bit Nippley you say, yes it is a sight to behold in person
