The console war ended the noment Microsoft f*cked up the Xbox one release. if it wasn't so bad I'm sure xbox one would had been in a more competitive position, but unfortunately Microsof its only to blame for that horrible release.
If Sony didn't mess up in the beginning of the PS3 launch then it definitely would have done better and having God of war the killzone trilogy, uncharted and giving the original PS3 console a cheaper price then 600 then yes I believe it would have done as well as PS4 plus free to play online they can make ads going at least on PlayStation you get to play online for free they would literally dominate but that's not how it went because of greed
Play Station is the dominant console. There's been no real competition since 360 era.

I wonder if Xbox would have any footing in the console space at all if Sony hadn't fucked up the PS3 launch.

There has never been a console war between Xbox and PS . From day one Xbox didn't stand a chance.
