I've always loved Stephen's smile. My love for his smile increased after reading The Black Hole War. Stephen's smile was mentioned a lot in that book. Plus, I'm glad he's still able to smile, with all he's been through, and all he knows
cupof acid Yes I know that, I was making a silly joke about the poor man, who although paralysed has one of the greatest brains in the world. Look up joke and embrace the concept, it might make your life less miserable.
Stephen Hawking will never die no matter how bad his ALS gets. For starters as to why that's the case, he is a cyborg and cyborgs are immortal and will outlive humanity unconditionally. Second of all, he is a legend of science and astronomy and legends like cyborgs are immortal and will outlive humans any old day. Since Professor Hawking here is an Englishman, it's obvious that he spoke with a British accent back when he could talk on his own. Since Stephen Hawking is the smartest man in the world after Albert Einstein, I'm surprised why he still delves deep into astronomy and theories of the universe when he could be using his possible IQ of 300 to figure out a cure for the ALS disease that left him crippled, in a wheelchair, and unable to communicate without the aid of a computer text-to-speech software. I imagine that if the cure for ALS existed outside of science fiction, the process of activating it would involve the implantation of an artificial electric signaling wire skeleton to attach to the central nervous system in the brain allowing it to regain control of the body's outer extremities, including the ability to speak since the jaws won't be locked shut anymore.
My astronomy professor said that most people are not nearly intelligent enough to understand or comphrehend/grasp the brilliance of Dr. Hawking's shared knowledge about the time, the universe, etc. and my physics professor who is very smart is a great long-time admirer of Sir Stephen's genius work also.
Steven's condition is nothing but a blessing to him he is spending each day that he has left on earth and dedicating it for spreading knowledge to us. Thats why our education is so important. He said if we are the smartest beings in the universe we need to keep the human race alive as best as we can.
@QuibbyFailed I find him incredibly inspiring. I've seen in interviews him talking about getting sad and depressed about his condition and the reality of it but he somehow finds strength and keeps going. I feel like if he can push on and achieve such amazing things then most of us have a lot to step up to.
@JaredsiVlog He's ok now. He just passed away yesterday, so I know he is at peace now and doesn't have to live with that horrible disease anymore. He died in my arms, and he was with his family till the end. RIP DADDY I LOVE YOU! 12/23/61-8/13/10
I wonder how long it took to film this interview? The questions had to be given to Hawking well in advance, so he could write out the answers, it is such a painstaking process for him to write letter by letter with his eye/computer interface. I love that he continues to be an active person, writing and challenging the world with his ideas.
He is the greatest mind in the world. Anyone here saying anything bad about him can't even begin too comprehend what goes through his mind. He's not trying too make up crap about science fiction, he purely cares about continuing an existence for species that have taken so long too develop into something that is self aware of everything around them. The human race has amazing potential if people stop being so close minded worrying about a stock market and worrying more on space exploration.
To the people who have disliked this video, you have at most disrespect for the intelligence, power and will of the human brain. I have great respect for Stephen. He has done more for science and our race than 99 percent of the world. People need to realise how much power this man has. He has inspired me to open my eyes and to always search for answers instead of avoiding them. I respect Professor Stephen Hawking more than anyone else in the world.
Thanks for your correction. :) I thought it must be hard sometimes where he has to use whatever movements he has left, but I guess with so many years of this, he has gotten used to it.
@EGarrett01 You must not understand the concepts involving management of resources. Once you blow your window of opportunity (by wasting all your resources TOO early), that's it. There is no way to colonize ANYTHING right now or in the near future. We must learn to get along first and stabilize this planet. 100 in, 100 out. stable. People having 18 kids would be FINED, not applauded. etc. I'm for exploring. Just not wasting.
@blastkist The technology he uses to speak is basically taken from automatic answering machines used in the 70's and 80's. When he was offered a much better system, he refused saying that the world had grown accustomed to his "voice" and he didn't want to change it. That's the way he has sounded for decades, he's made it his own, it is what makes him unique. Whenever you hear that voice, you know it's Hawking right off the bat.
this man is an inspiration, he has a passion for knowledge that helps the human race as a species and hes paralyzed, this little kids that are " depressed " should get over it, Stephen shows us how to use your brain...
even though i dont believe everything that he says when it comes to creation, i do believe that it makes sense. i have major respect for him. hes struggled most of his life and can still have an AMAZING sense of humor.
You commented on how everybody else has accomplished nothing purely because of Hawking's scientific accomplishments, yet science is the only thing important in the world. All aspects of the world are just as important and are necessary to have a fulfilling society. If the percentage went up markedly we'd have an uneven amount of balance in the world. What the world needs more right now is programmers, better politicians and more computer engineers since that's the direction society is going to.
@born2own your opinion is valued, there is one thing about your comment, it shows that ppl in the past and in the present ppl look for answers and never found them. but thats where the problem occurs, they lose faith they lose sense of things and the question comes to mind that what if. now if god doesnt exist and god is mentioned as a being of love, how is it that we are all evil? with out light, theres no darkness, without heat theres no cold, so that means the devil exists, therefore god does
well as a christian...i show great respect to that man although i deny about what he said about the universe created out of nothing, its obvious many scientist made that theory before him but still hes a great man, let him spend hes last few yrs with his loving family.
He's completely right that we should start spending the greater part of our efforts to expanding our life as a species beyond planet Earth, and the sooner we start, the better. So, we should be wasting less time on trying to make life on Earth more comfortable as it will inevitably come to an end; sooner or later.
If everybody in the world was Stephen Hawking, society would collapse. Sure, he's a genius who is very important to science, but the world needs more than brilliant scientists. His intelligence goes only so far.
@drinndrann it is a voice synthesizer that uses a predictive text entry system, which requires only the first few characters in order to auto-complete the word, but as he is only able to use his cheek for data entry, not a mind reading machine...
@StuckeyMurdog he has a computer from which he chooses a series of words from on a screen and he can either select a word from eye or head movement or in an earlier version by pressing a button. Then after he selects the words he can send the words to a speech synthesizer. He manages to speak about 15 words a minute through this medium, and he enjoys it because it actually gives him intonation with his speech. His only problem he says though is it gives him an American accent XD.
after he says "maybe" at the end of the video he says something along the lines "i would tell you what i think but you have my sympathies" its on a separate video
That's one of the sad things of the current public school system. We're all designed to be well rounded in math, science, social studies and English. We don't take into consideration that if we focus on a field or two, or somebody needs an education that doesn't involve that much in the 4 fields that they'll be wasting their time. Majority of adults never use the information they gathered from school, since it's not practical. Just like if we all learned science, it wouldn't be practical.
@RoyalDRM89 He's a Mensa member, one of the youngest Fellows of the Royal Society in 1974, was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982, and became a Companion of Honour in 1989. What the hell could a person like you do?
How on Earth can you talk about him like that... you don't even know him.I might not either, but i sure wished i did. He is an amazing guy and he cares about this world. If you have something to say about him, then tell me.You need to have respect for this man. thank you and have a nice day. :)
I've always loved Stephen's smile.
My love for his smile increased after reading The Black Hole War. Stephen's smile was mentioned a lot in that book.
Plus, I'm glad he's still able to smile, with all he's been through, and all he knows
I'm glad that he smiled at the end. It just marked a smile on my face as well.
He's just looking up the answers on his computer
No. That's a part of how he "speaks"
cupof acid No. That was me making a cruel joke
??? That's how he sees what he said. Plus he can't type. The only muscle he can move is his cheek.
cupof acid
Yes I know that, I was making a silly joke about the poor man, who although paralysed has one of the greatest brains in the world.
Look up joke and embrace the concept, it might make your life less miserable.
Says the man who's name is yook fooh
The smile on his face at the end, where he answers "maybe" to the question about our survival, is priceless!
Love the smile he gives at the end.
"Do you think we will survive?"
"...Maybe."
Love that smile at the end. Love you Dr. Hawking!
welcome..yea i agree, its truly amazing that he is even able to do this.

it was the most epic smile i have ever saw, espcially given the whole context of the situation and the of the question.
i love how he smiles at the end. :)
gotta love the "maybe" and the smile at the end
Steven's condition is nothing but a blessing to him he is spending each day that he has left on earth and dedicating it for spreading knowledge to us. Thats why our education is so important. his smile.. that smile is more than 1000 words
i love when he smiled at the end
I admire this guy. For his determination even though he got that disease he has not faded away to nothing.
i like when he says maybe. that smile he gave was awesome
at the end ''maby..' and a freaking scary smile!
I love this guy. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm serious. He is so inspiring.
@QuibbyFailed I find him incredibly inspiring. I've seen in interviews him talking about getting sad and depressed about his condition and the reality of it but he somehow finds strength and keeps going. two BRILLIANT yet HUMBLE minds having a chat.
"you have selected Sam as the computer default voice" LOL

hawking : maybe (best smile ever)
2:33 he get hes troll-face on ;)
"We are in danger in destroying ourselves in our greed and stupidity." He is a true genius. Keep going, Mr. Hawking.
"Maybe." - I love him. What a great person.
He is the greatest mind in the world. Anyone here saying anything bad about him can't even begin too comprehend what goes through his mind. i love this video because at the end he smiles
I agree with Mr.Hawking on spreading out in the universe.
i have such respect for this man.
lol its funny how he smiled when he said maybe at the end of the video

That's a very sweet smile Stephen Hawking made at the end :D.
That just blew my mind and it was only a couple minutes of him talking.
Looking at him smile made me put a smile on my face to
@hatntops hahahahahaha! My favorite vid!

love the cheeky smile at the end :P
hey it's the guy on the weather band radio.
hawking: maybe... **smile**
that just made my existence =)
Listening to: "Patrice O'Neal on O&A #93 - Everybody Hates Steve Carlesi" brought me here.
even though i dont believe everything that he says when it comes to creation, i do believe that it makes sense. i have major respect for him. hes struggled most of his life and can still have an AMAZING sense of humor.
"Do you think we will survive?" - nailed me
+mastertheillusion See Battlestar Galactica
It is absoulotely REMARKABLE pn what he says on every vid of him on youtube!
Such a cool guy, it would be awesome to meet him.

Lol, I laughed when he smiled at the end: Maybe.. >:)
xD at the end the daugher looks in to the camera, after he said: "maybe" xDD
his smile was great
I have one question... Do they prepare the questions and answers before the interview or how does he answer that fast?
I think people should start paying more attention to this guy. He obviously knows what he's talking about.
You commented on how everybody else has accomplished nothing purely because of Hawking's scientific accomplishments, yet science is the only thing important in the world. when he said maybe, he was thinking no.

How did he get paralyzed and when?
Genius, Pure Genius!
well as a christian...i show great respect to that man although i deny about what he said about the universe created out of nothing, its obvious many scientist made that theory before him but still hes a great man, let him spend hes last few yrs with his loving family.
EPIC!
When I apply my battle theory, minds are relatively blown.....
That smile at the end creeped me out.
hope that sooner or later they should invent something for dr. hawking that would make him easier to communicate (faster and at ease).
awesome
Amazing how far people will go to live out their dreams. :)

"by our greed & stupidity" so true he is on to something

They should really close the comments section for this interview.
lol did he flatline at the end when he smiled and said "maybe"

Professor Hawking sadly passed away at the age of 76 in 2018.
Ha ha. I like the way that ended, with that wry grin. Dr. Hawking is sharp as a tack.
after he says "maybe" at the end of the video he says something along the lines
"i would tell you what i think but you have my sympathies"
its on a separate video
Nice placement of math equations in the background!
u know how mean i am...this guy FING cracks me up!!!! hahahahahahaaa beep beep i beep thought it was beep fairly beep obvious beep beep
HIS LITTLE PERVERT SMILE AT THE END HAHA
He has an irresistible "sparkling" in his eyes-

can someone tell me how he can talk with his mouth closed or with a program without using hands, how is he doing that
this guy is awesome
How does he talk trough that machine? Was it trough his eyes?
So.. Do you think we will survive?
...
Maybe...
*smiles*
respect this man.
"Do you think we will survive?" "Maybe..."
wow this shook me.
