- This bow hunting films captures a first for both Trent and myself as we bow hunt for goats on private station.
And as much as I love and enjoy hunting on public land in NZ and/or Victoria for big game animals, it is equally satisfying to bow hunt for goats on private land.
Despite the academic debate about whether bow hunting is an effective tool for conservation management of feral animals in Australia - there are now two less feral goats on the country. And they tasted pretty good too!

I m sure i commented on this earlier. But as I am preparing for a goat trip next week, I'm getting my fill over TH-cam goat hunting content to keep the excitement up. Such a great vid. I mentor loads of new hunters and enjoy the experience of their first successes so much. Thanks for sharing!

MountainMan Hunting Films one of my friends that I hunt with dose a awsom billy goat call . We have bean known to drive around canberra with him doing this goat call at random pedestrians. Or road workers or out the front of restaurants. The reactions we get are priceless. My 5 year old boy refers to him as uncle Goat .

I would love to be able to learn how to hunt for my own meat. When I was in the single digits a very long time ago, I used to go camping with my pop and stay on farms all around WA, hunting roos and foxes but he passed away before I could learn how to do it for myself. It really doesn't help with ppls attitudes in WA towards something that is a very fundamental basic human skill for survival which we all have forgotten. It's also so frowned upon here that it's difficult to talk to ppl to find recourse's to develop that skill.
Great skill for sure, and gives so much purpose and focus when out in the bush. Suggest joining a Club like the Australian Deer Association 🦌

Hi Jamie good to see you are out and about thinning out some goats I was going to hunt some Sambar with a mate of mine until we got locked up in Dictator Dans jail but it doesn't matter at the moment coz I have to fix up a slight health problem anyway when you can get back to Vic you should bring Trent for a Sambar hunt in the Alpines he'd love it.
Cheers Rod - i hope you sort the health issues out and return to the Vic alps as soon as covid restrictions ease! I am chomping at the bit to get into the high country. Tossing up between a NZ backpack trip for reds or a Vic high country Sambar hunt, and an elk hunt to America. Trent would be keen for a Vic trip I’m sure. @@MountainMan_NZ Thanks Jamie I've had another visit from Jack the dancer and I don't even like him I tell him to fuck off but he keeps coming back and even though i love the high country i only need to drive 5 to 15 ks from my place to harvest a Sambar or a Fallow in fact the bloody things can be found about a 1klm from my place but we can't hunt any of that country

well done ,great hunting guys, this is the way we should be living and obtaining our food, sadly most people now only get their food from supermarkets and they are totally detached from the natural way of hunting and processing meat for survival.

Awesome to see some hunting mate Victoria sucks at the moment. All I can do at the minute is wait for arrow parts to arrive so I can build up some hunting arrows and practice in the back yard at 10 metres. Stoked to see you getting out🤙 keep them coming 👍
That’s it Jay - Where there’s a will there’s a way. I picked up my new Bow only days before the regional lock downs in perth and spent the time doing the same as you at close quarters . Get those reps!
@@MountainMan_NZ plus iv got to build my strength back up I'm fit and 35 and had a heart attack last week the put a stint in the next day. I don't eat crappy food doc think it is genetic high cholesterol. So no heavy lifting for 2 week till I talk to the cardiac rehabilitation clinic.
Holy $h!t dude, that’s scary! I have heart disease and high blood pressure in the family so I get a calcium score test (ct scan) to see if there is any deposits in my arteries. Better to know about this stuff early!

Unfortunately we are in the wrong state mate! Try door knocking, or join local clubs where someone may invite you to some properties but people are pretty tight lipped which is not unusual. Plenty great public land to hunt on in Victoria - I’m hanging out to head back there

On those animals we didn't take the ribs and neck, but on subsequent hunting trips we have been taking the ribs, neck, and hips (along with all the usual cuts) for slow cooking. Amazing, I wish I'd taken ribs and neck before!

G'day fellas, great video as I live in near by and have recently taken up archery myself with the hope 9f hunting and becoming self sustainable also, I'd love to see more videos if you have them on the processing of the animals once down and what cuts to keep, also if you have any pointers for finding properties i would very much be keen, I'm not sure how TH-cam works for private messaging or if you know of any forum's to point me in the right direction, thanks again and I look forward to more videos

Regarding properties, start by joining a bow club and meeting bow shooters , go to Hotty world and shoot 3D targets it more than likely you’ll meet like minded guys and girls. Also join forums or face book pages - I did years ago but don’t anymore . Goodluck!

Good spotting there mate, yeah Sometimes I cut the animals up differently. Just depends what I want to do with the meat. Yeah the clubs are good to meet people but I try not to use them for networking to get spots as most people are cagey and I respect their privacy. In saying that I have never turned down an offer to hunt with someone else! It helps when you can reciprocate spots or help them out in some other way. Goodluck man
try taking the neck roasts off the animal. They are arguably the best cut on the animal for curries, they have a heap of sinew running though it, but that just liquefies after 3-4 hours in the slow cooker.
Thanks Naresh, funny you should say that, because I just killed a deer with the bow yesterday and have kept the neck meat, along with ribs, legs and steaks, yeow!!
@@MountainMan_NZ yeah the neck is seriously underrated in a slow cooker. It's even better when you leave it on the bone and you cook it down whole, the bone adds a heap of flavor to it.

Cheers Dave , on this occasion I hung it over night outside but under cover (~7 degrees) and let it dry out, then butchered n processed the meat within 24 hr. I did wonder if I should soak the meat in milk to tenderise it before cooking the first batch , but I may give that a go for the next batch. The curry tasted better on days 3 and 4.

On a broadside shot do you shoot into foresrm/shoulder or behind the shoulder/forearm?
I prefer to go behind the shoulder, and punch through ribs either mid lungs 🫁 or low heart. I think as a rifle hunter I default to the main shoulder/forearm area which is not good for bow hunting!!!

Yes midway behind shoulder bow (lungs are biggest target), yep elbow for rifle. You can double lung shoot an animal with rifle and it will kill the animal, but usually they will run as if not hit, whereas a shoulder shot usually breaks both front legs and they collapse or find it very difficult to run off with their front wheels broken! Bow shooting an animal in the front shoulder just lacks penetration and less likely to get full pass through which you want for maximum blood loss

What bows and setup do you use man?
Cori Broome Trent uses a Diamond 320 bow at 70lb draw weight at 28” draw length, and I use a Mathews VXR 31.5 bow at 70lb, 29.5” draw length. Trent using 300 spine arrows and I use between 300 and 340 spine arrows, Easton axis 5mm shafts with 125-135g broadheads

I don't want to know specifics, however what region are you in, do you hunt in all WA?
How is the hunting over there? Species, quantities etc. Any info you could give would be much appreciated.

Thanks mate, as I said in reply to your same message on two other WA hunts, the hunting here in WA is limited to private land only. And so it comes down to contacts - as opposed to NsW or Vic where they have public land hunting opportunities which are in my opinion far more rewarding and enjoyable than private land. Nonetheless, WA has deer (reds, fallow, rusa, and apparently Sambar around Cape leuwin), pigs, goats and other ferals such as camels, brumbies etc further north and in land. If you come over here you should join the ADA WA branch to meet like minded folk. Cheers

@iantooke3549 nah I'm from Mount Maunganui. Yeah I know the disposes , I used to access Te Tuhi track from that side, and also Garry sadlers side. But normally I walked over from whakamaramara side,which is closer to Mount maunganui
Everyone is looking for lean meat these days but we have actually evolved to eat fat with meat . and actually need animal fat if we eat meat for our bodies to process it properly.
Can you hunt in public National Park ?
Yes, depending on where in Australia or New Zealand you are. Victoria in particular has some amazing public hunting access into national parks and state forests. A great way to spend time in the wilderness pursuing these wild animals, as an amazing food source

Nice hunting, sorry about your elk hunt. I was was wondering about it. Here in the states, much of it seems more political than reality. A lot of funny stuff going on and a lot of corruption to hurt our president, which is the best President I've seen. What scope mounts you run on your rifles? I'm researching what to go with on a T3x.
Thanks 🙏 I’ll have to book the elk bow OTC DIY trip in for 2021!! Scope mounts I have on all my tikkas are the tikka optilock mounts with the plastic inserts that clip on the scopes before mounting, and a small recoil lug that sits in the recess above the action for one of the mounts
@@MountainMan_NZ Yeah, I've seen those, I also seen there are a few companies that do a pic rail with a metal dal insert that acts like a lug. I might try Leupold Back Country mounts.
