Its about his mother left him aged 3, and the pain, his dad had to bring him up on his own

Hands down one of the best songs ever made. Released in 1985, and became hugely popular and still is till this very day. The band itself is called Simply Red. The singer is, Mick Hucknall, who, by the way, sounds amazing live. Definitely checkout the live version. Love, love, love this song. Will always be one of my favorites ❤️❤️❤️ Glad you enjoyed this💯🔥🔥🔥

    It came on in 1985
When it came out we didn’t know who he was because back then we only had Video Soul w/Donnie Simpson and Simply Red was new. The song blew up way before the video came out.
The song is about his mother leaving the family and he is stuck with his abusive father and you hear the pain in his voice. He still performs live to this day and the voice is still great

I love this song, his vocals are so raw and soulful that they sound like the soot of flour that has been left in frying oil after frying chicken. This song makes me cry especially as the crying trumpet desperately sings as the song faded off. I first fully discovered this song on a rainy Tuesday in June 2015. My high school had went on a field trip to Spanish Harlem and we had ended our trip because it started pouring. Our coach bus was stuck in traffic hour and I decided to listen to my Pandora. Usually the song would come on and I would skip after the first second, but I decided to listen and give it a try and from that point, I was in love. While I listened to the song, the vibe of the song matched with the ambience of the setting as the rain continued to poor and gently roll down the windows of the bus. It felt like I was stuck in that moment of time. I will always love this song not only because it made me appreciate nature and it's surroundings, but this song is about a how his mother abandoned him a a little boy (true story). Plus this song was a smash hit and I believe it reached #1on the Billboard Hot 100.

I feel you, nice story. I have songs like tht too the reminded me of specific times of my life . Have you ever heard Dionne Farris -Hopeless ? Tht always reminds me being in the car with my family as a kid back in 97. We were at the gas station when I first heard it. It always reminds me of tht moment along with the movie Love Jones. Which was on the soundtrack for the movie.

    Great Review ...
If you don't have an issue with Rock, you should try Aerosmith " Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" , " Crazy" and " Crying". All three are classics ...

This song always takes me back to thinking about the better times in my life in the 80's 90's and people that I had in my life that are gone now. I wish I was reunited with them in the afterlife.

I love this song. This song came out in 1985.. I was like 5 then, but they really played this song in the early 90's. This song remind me of good times with my siblings and cousins. I think Angie Stone remade this song back in the early 2000's.

I remember when I was 15 or 16 waking up to this song playing on MTV around 2 or 3 in the morning! It was the first time I had heard and saw this song. I remember thinking that his face and voice didn't match, I love the song but was confused. It always seems like a song about what if.

I listen to this song almost every night. It has a somber yet calming appeal and it was popular on the radio in Jamaica growing up. The video makes me want to connect with my British ancestry visit and explore, it's very nostalgic.

I grew up hearing this song all the time on the radio. You're right about Mick's voice being soothing. At the same time he has so much passion and power within it as well. "Holding Back the Years" is the third single from Simply Red's debut album, Picture Book (1985); it reached #1 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the UK Singles Chart. It is one of two Simply Red songs to reach number one in the U.S. Please react to Simply Red - "Stars" and "Sunrise."

He wrote this at 17 yrs old. It's about the fact that his mother left him when he was 3 yrs old & never went back!! That's why he has such pain in his voice when he sings it.
