    Nicely done Roy. Great idea from a viewer. I’m planning to move to my forever home in two years that’s when I’m gonna be setting up a spare bedroom with the layout similar to yours. I love when you run trains to show the new layout. Keep up the good work.

      Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. Sometimes we have to build the layout of our dreams in a spare bedroom, when it's the only room available. I think the biggest constraint we model railroaders face is space, or lack of space. ...Roy

    I'm looking forward to seeing the additional traffic through Green River. I prefer to use flex track on visible portions of a layout, but I used UniTrack for 2 large staging yards on a previous layout. I took my time before fastening down the tracks. That gave me opportunities to try different arrangements before settling on a permanent solution. I second the suggestion by southern207 to try the Kato extension tracks for making the connections with the lift out section. There may be a better option but I believe it would be worth an experiment.

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me, too, Jerry. That definitely should increase the traffic passing through Green River. After all, 45 to 75 trains pass through there on the prototype each day. I agree: it's a good idea to operate trains for a while before gluing the track down and ballasting it, because there's always the chance of discovering a needed change in the track arrangement while operating trains on it. I'm going to order those Kato extension tracks, because I think that may just be the best solution to crossing the cuts in the benchwork for the lift-out bridge. I'll need 8 of them. ...Roy

    Another good video Roy. I consider the stub tracks on the staging yards as another opportunity for operations in that you have to attach different Loco's when running the trains back out onto the layout, thus releasing the Loco's trapped in the staging yards. As you say a loco holding track may be required but at least you would be varying the loco's used on your trains.

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Neil. Exactly. I believe your suggestion is the most viable option I have right now. That is, have diesels on stand-bye in a separate storage track at the yard throat. These can be use to haul the train for its return run, and after the train has departed, the trapped diesels can move into the diesel storage track. ...Roy

    You know if you were to add just basic scenery beyond the opening to the Pockey sub, the pass through wouldn't be as noticeable. With the bridge in front, hiding the hard lines of the opening, it would virtually disappear.
    I don't know how many trains you run in a session but the crossovers at the throat would work. All you would need to do is run around each train between sessions.
    Nice video Roy!!!

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true, William. First, I have to put up the masonite backdrop there, and then I can begin to work on the scenery. The scenery that I do for Echo Canyon all along that side of the scenic divider should be the most spectacular scenery on my layout. I've ordered more turnouts. When they arrive, I'll be able to see how they work at the yard throat. ...Roy

    i love it Roy. what about crossovers at the beginning of the yard to detach and run around the consist to go to the end of the consist to push the train to the end of the yard? also you could do the same thing to the end of the yard to untrap your locos if your train has to pull into the yard the whole way or have a dedicated yard switcher at the front of the yard where you could cut loose your big road locos and use it to push the consist back to the end of the yard the whole way. just a couple of suggestions my friend. i love your ideas for staging yards i do need one my self but am a little Leary of doing this since i am so far on the way with scenery. i dont have any more room to expand so i can only go down and that would mean a helix and a whole rearrangement of my track plan that i really don't want to change. oh well the constrictions of model railroading right. a fight to fight another day i guess. keep running those trains my friend. • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your observation, Jim. I always appreciate it. I think you alluded to what will eventually be the solution to those trapped diesels, and basically, the solution includes a diesel storage track near the yard throat. Diesels waiting on the storage track can couple to a newly arrived train to haul it for its return trip, and after the train departs, the trapped diesels can move to the diesel storage track. I'm a really big believer in staging yards. They add operational realism and interest to our layouts big time. ...Roy

    • @Mercatoyd
      @Mercatoyd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roy..this comment was exactly my thought too.. either a series of crossovers stepping across from inside to the aisle ending at a dedicated run around track to untrap the entering locos.. and then push them the rest of the way in by either a dedicated yard dog or the engines you just detached. Your lift out is so simple.. that should work great. Tom

    Hi Roy, the extension of the Pocatello yards is a great addition and long time coming. Your layout is taking shape nicely. After seeing your video, I wonder if you need some cross-overs as runarounds to back out the diesel units so they can be re-used on other manifests?

    Great work. I model in 3 rail O, and had a similar problem. I Testers glued my track to the bridge, and cut the rails at the joint of table and bridge. I also cut the ties back so I can slide the rail joiners back in toward the bridge side. Ballast would impede the table side. I haven't tried taking the bridge out yet, but so far no issues with electrical connectivity.

    Hello Roy, another inspirational video especially, as I'm in the process of building my 1st staging yard on my N Scale railway. Maybe you can answer a question for me (I live in the channel islands uk with no trains) why are double headed diesels coupled back to back? maybe it's a daft question for most. Many thanks and keep up the good work on your railroad. Julian

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Julian. It's a pleasure to hear from you. As you may know, I live here in Panama City, Panama. We actually have trains here. They are intermodals that travel from one side to the other side of the Isthmus, a distance of 50 miles each way. Yes, modern diesel consists normally run back to back (or rear to rear, as they say). That's so they can make the return trip without any need for switching the diesels around to face the correct direction. No question is daft. That's how we learn, and in model railroading, there's a lot to learn. ...Roy

    hi Roy... i think you're going to have to do what i am doing in my main yard & that is have one track designated as your arrival track with a turnout at the end to get your power over to the next track .. then you'll be able to run the power down to the other end & switch the train that just arrived to one of the other 2 available tracks... just my 2 cents... so basically you'll have 2 track for staging & 2 track for maneuvers.. vinny

    Hi Roy and greetings from snowy England!!!!!
    This looks like an other good addition to running your layout.
    As it will obviously be necessary to lift your locos by hand, might I suggest a pair of white cotton gloves to pick them up, thus avoiding the dreaded finger prints on the locos. I now use white cotton gloves to handle all finished rolling stock to avoid finger marks.
    Cheers, Bob

I don't have a staging yard but I hope this big yard will suffice. I've always liked the look of freight yards so I don't intend to have any hidden staging yards. Thanks, Jack. You're so right: the extension of the Pocatello Sub is a tremendous addition to my layout in terms of operations. By "other staging yard," I guess you mean the one under Green River. Well, it's 12 feet long and has 8 double-ended tracks. For now, it and the Pocatello staging are going to have to be enough, but I'm a big, big believer in staging yards and their impact on operations. II’m investigating all sort of possibilities on how I should mount my layout module once the room I’m putting in is ready. Your’s look very easy and might jut work for my needs. I’m modeling in HO and the first module is about 7’ long 18’ dep and will probably weigh around 20 pounds total once it is complete. I really like your videos,, please keep up the awesome work. Ron

      Thank you, Ron. I appreciate that. To tell you the truth, I don't really know how much weight those L-brackets can support, but I'm sure it's a LOT. They are really strong compared to other types of L-brackets. It's a great way to support the benchwork and reduces or eliminates altogether the need to use benchwork legs. The ones I'm using are 12" long on one side and 8" long on the other side. There may be longer ones available, but I don't know. In any case, I think they should work for you. ...Roy

    For the removable section, I'd suggest you watch Ken Patterson's Aug 2017 video where he built a removable section here - th-cam.com/video/4xda9jAdtbg/w-d-xo.html
    Might give you some idea's on how to better simplify the section and do away with the bolts which you really do not need. Ken gave me the inspiration to build a pop out section across my closet door which I showed in my recent video, but instead of all foam and magnets which I did want to use, I just built pockets for the center beam to rest in, and let weight and gravity to the rest. Easily slides in and out without too much fuss.

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much. I'll check out Ken's video. As for the bolts, they essentially keep the lift-out from moving horizontally, which is necessary for track alignment. Of course, this can be done by other means, but in any case, it is very important. Well, we'll see, because it continues to be a work in progress. ...Roy

    Hi, Roy! Are you going to install some type of type of a barrier along the edge of the bench work to prevent derailed cars/Loco from falling all the way down to the floor? I like your solution regarding the access panel to the closet. I'm looking forward to how you lay the track across it so that it doesn't impede the removal to get to the door. You could use your new staging yard as your fictional access point for BNSF trains as well as being the Pocatello sub division. Happy Railroading !

    • @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569
      @n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, Jim, I like to think such derailments won't occur, but that would be too optimistic. Better to be safe than sorry with those expensive Kato diesels. I probably will end up putting a very low strip of something along the edge, just enough to prevent any derailed diesels and freight cars from falling to the floor. Regarding the fictional interchange with the BNSF, I agree. That would be a perfect place to put such an interchange. Interchange ops are one of my favorite activities on the layout. ...Roy
