    I picked up this hoya kerrii variegata one year ago today and I thought I would have a little more to show. Come to find out, these plants take about as long as a ZZ plant. I also noticed that I have some leaf spots, which make me concerned I have a fungus or some hoya disease. If you have an idea of what is going on with my hear leaf hoya propagation, please leave me a comment below. I would love to hear your propagation tips.

    Leave the callus exposed at the base of the leaf (the little tuber). If exposed to light, it can generate bud tissue. If hidden or buried it stays the same. I've done this several times . it's the only way that works

    I’ve seen several people say 7 years was the magic number for when they decided to push out new leaves, I just got one myself a few months ago before I knew this. Talk about long time propagation!

      @@SuburbanSill If the leaf doesn't have a node it will never grow. It will just develop roots and eventually die.
      I am not sure if the bump on your leaf is a node or not. Might be. The node can be in the soil, it doesn't have to be exposed (as someone here wrote). But as I said, I am not sure what you have there is a node, it looks a bit weird.
      Best way to get one of these plants to grow is to look for sellers on e-bay and make sure you can see that it is not just the leaf you are getting, but also part of the stem. Best case already rooted. If not rooted yet, stick it in water and wait for the roots (can be quick, but can also take a month or two). Fresh water every week.

      It's true! I just discovered a young shoot this morning on my husband's love heart plant. It's exactly seven years since I bought it for him for Valentine's Day. There must be something to it.

    Hoya kerrii are better propagated with a stem. Leaf cutting have a small chance of developing shoots after 3-5 years but as long as it doesn't die, there still is a chance.

    I have the green one leaf kerii and after a month or two it started its new growth. She has a tiny bit of the original stem. I didn't think it would grow anything. Now producing growth. Not all will from my understanding. What I did was expose the stem meaning didn't cover it up with soil. Let the soil dry out like all my hoyas. She gets bright indirect sun and its growing. Hope yours grows for you. 🤞🏽

    The progress after one years looks great. Just leave it alone, water less and put it outside where it can get fresh air and sunshine. Just don't let it get more hours of direct sunshine that it gets indoors. You really need to let it stay totally dry between watering.

    I had 2 leaves that eventually grew out as a plant. One took a year and the other took a few years. I did nothing except water it. Now one has died but I managed to propagate what remaining healthy leaves it had left. The other is still around but facing some issues either old age or I don’t know. I kind of lost track which one they are now. It’s been over 10 years. Got them as a wedding favor and the couple didn’t even last as long as my plants

  • @ruthdennisKnits
    @ruthdennisKnits 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    My understanding is that the leaf will not grow if there was not a node attached , but it will produce roots and a stem for new leaves. After a while the original leaf will die but by then you will have a stem and leaves

    • @walle5667
      @walle5667 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A leaf will not produce a stem. It will not do anything. If there is no node the leaf will sit in soil until it dies. It cannot grow anything.
      A piece of stem only CAN root and produce leaves, but not the other way round. Best thing to do is make sure the leaf you are purchasing has a bit of stem with it. If it's just the leaf then all it is is a Valentine's day gimmik.

    Last week I have seen a nice Hoya kerrii plant in a fabric store. I was so excited and asked where they bought it... It was a leaf that he bought on sale 3 years ago. It is now a nice looking plant. No need to say I went to the plant shop and bought a single Valentine leaf today. I see roots but have no idea if there is a nod.

    I don't have this hoya but I've heard that single leaf heart leaf hoyas from the store are purely ornamental as the way that they are cut often doesn't include a leaf node. So the plant does grow roots but never a new leaves.

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Right, I have heard the same, but I’ve also read online people claiming that they do get more leaves eventually, so this was me trying to see if it’s true. So far, I’m thinking that it won’t grow anything more 🤷🏼‍♀️ We’ll have to wait and see.

      The grower I used says the rooted single-leaf plants *can* sometimes have a tiny node on them, but not often. Without the node, it will only stay a leaf.

    I bought 2 about a month ago and transplanted them from their original container before I read this. Boo on that! I have them in a mix of potting soil, succulents potting soil and I always throw in a handful or two of perlite in my mix. I think I over watered them. I'm thinking of adding 35 % orchid potting soil into this mix. I need dryer soil . How much orchid mix do you recommend? Great video, very informative.

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I think you could do 50/50. I noticed the mixed I had was a little too chunky so keep that in mind. Good luck. Some say your might get growth and some say you won’t.

    .. I bought one in 2021, I just thought it was kinda cute, but I didn't know it was a Hoya, and I didn't really know what to do with it.. After a year or so, I gave it away to a neighbor.. It was still in a 1 inch nursing pot, and I told her to just give it water when dry.. About a month ago (2023), the woman sent me a text with. A picture of the Hoya, and asked me what was going on.. Picture was poor so couldn't really tell her, but it looked like a new stem coming.. Today she called me and asked again, and I told her to come over with the critter and I would take a look.. So she did.. Still in the 1 inch pot I could see the new stem and a tiny tiny new leaf.. But also something that looked like a stem with "dots" on the tip as if flowers would have been there.. And worst of it, soaking wet as in drowning.. I changed the pot to a 3 inch, took away as much of the soaked soil as I could and gave it new well draining soil, and told her not to water before completely dry.. The poor critter is a slow grower and needs time, sun, warmth, and patience to grow.. I still think it's a cute little one, but I don't want one.. I've got my baby Hoya Krohniana super silver keeping me busy..

      HI there! Quick question, did you totally take the Hoya Kerrii out of the dirt and expose the stem (whatever was in the dirt) in the light? Or did you do something else with it? How long did you do this for? Did it dry out? Should I water propagate it in the light?
      Thanks!

    I've heard that the size of the pot should depend on the size of the root system. So your pot is too big in my opinion. Besides, the spots on the leaf are probably a fungal infection. Too frequent watering or too little permeable soil that holds water. How is your plant holding up today?

  • @bibshot1989
    @bibshot1989 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had that problem with a few plants and it looks like it was the pot! Which is upsetting. Unfortunately some ceramic (porous on the inside) pots create that water crust and that has killed a few of my plants, ugh! Once I learned I started using them only as cache pot.

I’m not hoping it’ll vine or anything, but I did check my roots and they look super long... Don't give up. The swollen callous at the base can generate shoot tissue but it needs to sit just above the surface. It begins to go green as the chloroplasts move into it then a shoot will form eventually. I had the plain green form or H. kerrii and once the shoot appeared, it was extremely vigirous!
