    Fun fact: At an altitude of 4,014 metres, Litang is one of the highest towns in the world. For comparison, it is about 400 metres higher than Lhasa while the highest town in the US is Alma, Colorado at an elevation 3,224 metres. No wonder your manly partner is struggling with altitude sickness!

      @@chriswestwood3289 Well on that topic I actually talked with some friends from that region and it’s rather interesting. I’m from what you can say is inland China and a city that’s “metropolitan ”. We have high risers everywhere and subways & malls all that. So in uni we have a couple of classmates that are from Tibetan area. After getting to know each other we become friends. At our junior year summer vocation they invited me to travel to they hometown and I went. I had an amazing time and the night before I came back home we sat together and talked you know about career planing after graduation since it’s only one year away and she said to me that she’s gonna come back home. You can imagine how surprised I was when I heard that cause it never crossed my mind that she would give up the chance to stay in a much wealthier city and have a great career and just go back home. But she said she liked it home. Even thought in big cities life is fun but her mind feel at ease back home. After that night I realized something which is everyone’s mindset is different & what we think is good and fun may not be the case for another. So I think the same may apply to what you propose there maybe I say maybe they like their home just the way it is and not some big modern style like every other metropolitan cities.

    Hello “intrepid explorers”, Katherine and Wei! Many thanks for Your enlightening and entertaining travel blogs from the Central Realm!. I’ve visited China three times, but unfortunately not had occasion to visit Yünnan, Sichuan or Tibet proper. China has made tremendous progress in modernising and raising people’s living standards, even in many minority areas. It was interesting (albeit painfully claustrophobic) to see how people manage to flourish in the ravine city Derong. // As an Indo-Tibetanist I found your report from Lithang especially interesting. Lithang is home to a famous monastery (built 1580). The impressive monastery sponsored the production of the Lithang Kanjur (Buddhist Canon). Carving and editing of its 110 volumes of woodblocks (for printing) was completed by 1611. In the old days the relatively few Canon copies were a matter of prestige and beckoned monks to host monasteries for monastic studies, disputations, etc. Today Lithang is a vibrant centre also for popular Buddhist devotions. // In case you and Wei are still in Kashgar, you might investigate museum or historical traces of Baron C G Mannerheim’s sojourn there in 1906. He rested at the Russian legation in Kashgar while preparing his expedition (including 10 000 km on horseback!) eastward to Beijing and Japan. He was the second westerner to meet the 13th Dalai Lama. Because Mannerheim’s courtesy gifts were exhausted, on Wu Tai Shan he handed the Dalai Lama his revolver saying it might come in handy. Mannerheim later composed his 2-volume opus, “Across Asia from West to East in 1906-1908”. His collections are housed at several institutions in Helsinki.

      The development of Western China depends on government regulation. The government requires eastern coastal cities to support western cities one-on-one. Send technicians and funds for investment and training. And allocate part of the financial resources of the east to support the West.

      I think it has something to do with buffalos. Remember than the indigenous people here in America rely a lot on buffalos. But the British colonizers kill them and sell beef. Once the animals were destroyed, Locals lost their traditional way of living. I can imagine what would happen if there were no yaks in Tibet

    • @bee4590
      @bee4590 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      it sounds like you're not familiar with native americans and their condition in the united states (and canada). we have not treated native americans/indigenous canadians well, both in the past and today.
      so they do have reservations where they can live freely, but a lot of the time the land they were given isn't good for growing food, it's located far away from cities so the education and job opportunities aren't great, there's little infrastructure or stimulation so people get bored and use alcohol and drugs, etc.
      also, you have to keep in mind that we've killed off entire tribes of native americans, killed off thousands of bison so they would starve, kidnapped their children and placed them into white families or schools so they'd be "normal", etc-we truly damaged them in horrific ways and never gave them a chance to heal and recover (and at that point, _can_ you recover?)

    Thank you for sharing another very cool episode Katherine. Humors, Wei's before and after some climbing and the Chinese guy who wear some weird writing in English which he probably had no ideas of the meaning (common in China), in an otherwise quiet and spiritual small place. Towards the end, I just felt like you should have a lot of good opportunities in your career development ahead. The combination of your intelligence, knowledge, skills, experience, and a more unique spirit that are shown through your digital presentations, and many people probably can sense those qualities too. You have the "right look" too. Can picture you either in suit type of attire or more casual looking outfits like what you normally wear in different occasions for different jobs too. Wish you guys even better times ahead in the future.

There are so many beautiful stones and many colorful wheels make the temple so unique . Is the weather hot there ? You need a lot of energy and determination to walk a long way . Oriole who live there definitely keep good health there . I’m amazed by elderly who live there able to walk such a long way daily . 👍I have sympathy for Wei because I can’t walk a long way like the local residents. I need to have ice water and snacks to keep me going …. 🤣🤣🤣

    To digress a bit on the prayer wheels: whilst the idea of Dharmachakra, or the wheel of law exists throughout Buddhist regions and the Tibetan prayer wheels being the most visible representation today, There is a variation endemic to East Asia. Called _lunzang_ in Mandarin or _rinzo_ in Japanse, people began to build these "spinning libraries" in temples from the 10th century onwards. They're like regular prayer wheels, just huge and with lavishly ornamented bookcases built-in, stocked with thousands of sutras instead of mantras scripts. When spun, they're supposed to exert dharma into the universe like a prayer wheel, but also serve the purpose of easy ventilation for preserving the valuable sutras. While they're quite ubiquitous in Japan (117 in total), only 10 has survived in China to this day. There's one in Jiangyou, Sichuan, where I gather is not far from Chengdu. What makes this one special is it's the original 12th century setup, making it one of the oldest, housed in a rare building of the same vintage. And you can actually spin it, if you got the might of three. Worth a visit if you got the chance.

    My curiosity got the hold of me to look up at Litang, when Wei was gasping. Litang's altitude is about 13,000 feet and its population is 45,000. The effective O2 concentration is 12.7 which is about half that at sea-level. Litang is about 530 km west of Chengdu. Because there is no vegetation, I read the diet is meat and milk. What is the name of the temple where the large prayer wheel is. Thanks for the upload. It is very interesting and educational.
