Guys he's full out hiking on a *broad reach* and bringing his body to the back of his boat and still sometimes can't keep the boat flat so maybe 29 knots gusting 34 Also, the wind isn't the only thing that's heeling your boat, the waves add on. The waves here are pretty short so considering he hiked once and a while, he would be hiking full time with big waves.
I know it wasn't really designed as a planing hull but's these are only marginally pulling ahead of it's bow wave. I'd not call that planing. Planing for me is the calm after the storm. It's when the boat goes into crazy fast but totally calm mode. When you can take your hand off the tiller at 20+knots because everything it totally balanced. It's kinda Zen... Luv and Peace.

Burning Flame it depends at water depht a lot how high waves can form. This is very shallow lake ( about 2 meters only in this place). Skip first 2 minutes for better speeds.
When I was out doing club racing I went in a plastic boat with my sail folded and the whole boat depowered to the max because it was 37 or more knots gusting to 40 something in a bic told me

Good question! I know that usually there will be whitecaps on water when windspeed goes over 12 knots. Maybe some physics expert can explain it. Video is captured with GoPro on a very shallow but quite big lake around 200-500 meters from shore. Water depht is around 1,5 - 2 meters. Wind blows from shore. There was very small waves for this wind. Skip first 1.50 minutes to see higher boat speeds.
If you would look from the other direction, not from behind the boat, you would probabely see more wite caps, but generally wind from the land does not produce bigger and breaking waves if you are near the land and if the ground stays rather "flat" and if there is no opposite movement of the water itself (stream).

vincent7520 there boats are flat. Unless you 150 pounds hiking as hard as you can with your sail rigged super tight, your boat would not be flat

I went out on mine in high wind, I didn’t tip but the sail flew off.

The sail will rip at 35 knots. Our j24s brand new sail ripped in 27. It was a brand new laser performance sail. The optics would shred at 35
They're only tiny they're fine, I've been out in a laser standard in 40knots aslong as you don't let it flap around too much your good
