the term "storm trooper" or "sturm trupen" was coined in wwi late war when Germany started using highly mobile shock troop units to conduct raids in enemy trenches... as far as i can remember... my history is a little rusty too, and i do believe this happened in 1940 when France was first invaded, and in wwi Germany never broke through the Maginot line. the knights cross predated "they who shall not be named" by almost 100 years and it was basically their highest military honor

11:16 bullets arent lit when fired, it is a special round called a tracer its basically a small amount of phosphorous or magnesium coating on the rear of a bullet so that when the powder goes off, it ignites it and causes that tracer effect to see where you are shooting, whether at night or while in a plane these are very useful, but not every round is a tracer most of the time its 1 tracer every 4 regular rounds, so multiply what you see on screen by 4 and then it helps visualize how many rounds are going down range.

As he still had that event where he ends up running into the British Division, and his exaggerated reports back to Germany, freaks out the commanders there which sort of leads to a bit of hesitation come Dunkirk. This is the Battle of France in 1940, which culminated in British evacuation and French defeat.
The Maginot Line (named for War Minister Andre Maginot) was intended to prevent a German advance like WWI by fortifying the French border. The Germans had gained vast tracts of French territory in WWI, and fought a four-year war before being defeated, The bulk of French troops were either manning the Maginot line, or in Belgium trying to stem the attacks there, and the reserves could not be deployed in time to counter Rommel's advance.
Rommel is depicted wearing the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, not quite the Congressional Medal of Honour, but not bad at all.
"Anglais," is French for English. Knowing he wasn't French, they thought he was one of their British allies.

That you can enjoy their song and celebrate great leaders/ soildiers/ battles etc without taking sides nor making it political. And don't forget that very few of the German soldiers was Nazis. Most of them was just regular soldiers fighting for their country. The "normal" soldiers in alot of cases disliked the nazis.

"Civil War" has multiple former members of Sabaton and their entire discopgraphy is based on American History and Conflicts, mostly the American CIvil war.
Powerwolf is a different style of band, but most of their music is inspired by the European Middle Ages and the mythical stories from back then. Powerwolf has their own story where each band member has a persona from Romania/Transylvania in the middle ages, and they describe their music as more of a "heavy metal mass", as it revovles so much around the folk tales, myths and legends, mixed with the religious aspects of the middle ages. Powerwolf is really good if you want to learn where many of the English sayings about the dead, and where the different types of monsters come from.
Most monsters comes from Romania, just ask Dracula (Transylvania is a region of Romania).

Basically, the Stormtrooper idea is the basis on which modern armies today work. Smaller combat units move on the battlefield using cover and suppressing fire to find weak points in the enemy lines. When confronted with a strongpoint, enemy MG position for example, the Assault Unit would bypass it and leave it for other units to deal with. Rommel used this idea for his Panzer movement. Instead of attacking a strong defence, he let his units bypass it to take ground. The strongpoint may be dealt via the Luftwaffe or Artillery or the troops at these strongpoints may consider surrendering by understanding they are cut off rather than fight to the death. The reference Indi makes towards the Maginot Line is not about the bunker complex. He referred to the french trench lines and French Forces not being breached aka broken through. In 1940 one decisive attack broke through where 25 years earlier millions of shells and hundredthousands of dead could not.

18:19 The Knights Cross of the Iron Cross is somewhat of an analogue to the US Medal of Honor with few important differences.
-Unlike the MoH which, as far as I know, has no higher commendation, the Knights Cross had a ranking system attached to it - Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. These would sort of be like upgrades over time in military service.
    - Furthermore, while any rank could earn the simple Cross for bravery and exceptional valour in battle similar to the MoH, those subsequent upgrades were almost exclusively reserved for officers and commanders as the main criteria for winning it was extraordinary leadership. Rommel won them over the course of the North Africa campaign between 1941-1943, one each year, because while the campaign failed overall, over its course he had given the British and later Americans serious trouble with how he commanded the Afrika Corps
    - The only exception to the officer upgrade rule of the Cross was for German pilots who got their upgrades for it the higher their kill count was even if they were only enlisted men. I'm a little unclear on the reasoning for it but I think it's because very skilled pilots eventually end up as squadron leaders so in that position the leadership criteria start to apply on top of their own personal kill count

You only see the bullets because they’re tracer ammunition, which is used to help aiming with machine guns.
Normal bullets aren’t visible and typically the bullets are mixed, thus for every tracer bullet that you see there’s most likely going to be at least one normal bullet that you don’t see.
The tracer bullets contain pyrotechnic charges that create a certain color (e.g. green, white, red,…) and thus you see where your bullets are landing.
    P.S.
You can see the tracer rounds also during daytime, but of course it’s more impressive during the night.

Hello Sogal and Roger. I quite enjoyed this one as I could imagine myself playing with my toy German tank and plastic figures to it as a small kid.
7:00 stormtroopers were a German innovation in WW1, though I got into a disagreement in Great War comments, where I tried to say they were not that novel, as chosen men existed in Napoleon's time as per Sharpe. They were not a Nazi invention, though they make good WW2 film baddies, especially with a British actor as evil officer commanding.
11:00 Your fireworks background showing again - it is striking seeing night battles like this.
The Maginot Line was a WW2 thing. A scaled up version of the defensive WW1 lines you were surprised at in a Great War video. The French did not want to sacrifice another generation in head on attack and opted for strong defense. Rommel smashed through the top corner where it met the Benelux countries. The advance was unlike the fighting the stormtroopers in WW1 did as their advances were on foot, a bit at a time. Only the British had anything near this in WW1, right at the last 100 days. The French were therefore equally taken aback by the speed of this advance as they based their defense on WW1.
I stayed for a short time with the family of a German ex soldier who fought under Rommel in North Africa. It felt a bit odd with my uncle having fought there too, though he just took my hand, feeling it was something in common. I asked if the soldiers looked up to Rommel as much as the British believed and he said they did. Rommel was much admired as a good soldier and officer by the British.

I think the whole "invention" was that the germans started selecting and training people specifically for trench raids in an organized manner, establishing a training standard. And shared that with their allies to the south (who also started doing that)
That were the Sturmtruppen/Stormtroopers: specifically trained trench-raiding/fast-sneaky-night-attack infaterists working in group sized formations (a group being 8-10 soldiers)
Sure in Napoleonic times people got chosen for special asignements, but i don't know that they were specially trained as additional kind of an infantery category.

While I don't dislike Ghost Division, it is one of the less interesting Sabaton songs IMO. The parts of their catalogue I enjoy the most are the songs dealing with heroism, sacrifice or unity in the face of adversity.
The Swedish version of "A Lifetime of War", especially the Gothenburg live performance you can find on TH-cam, is a real tear-jerker, "No Bullets Fly" is a very powerful story from WW2. "Union (Slopes of St. Benedict)" is a song in part about the Battle of Monte Cassino, and part about the many nations making up the western allies standing side by side, shoulder by shoulder fighting together against evil. "Hearts of Iron" and "The Last Battle" are two songs about German soldiers doing the right thing near the tail end of WW2. There are of course many more but these are some of my favorites.
PS: If you ever decide to check out No Bullets Fly, do check out the animated story video of it. It provides great context.

Fall Gelb started on 10th May 1940.
Stormtroopers are the basis of all modern infantry units and tactics, the man credited with the invention of elite shock troops in the Great War was a General Von Hutier who's tactics stressed the importance of speed, surprise and lots of controlled aggression.

what rommel meant was that the German troops were stuck in trenches fighting french (and british) in the same area for 4 years before, and this time they simply broke through in a matter of days. They just did it.
Also you don‘t see all rounds at night, only tracer rounds which are specifically engineered to ignite when fired. Standard infantry almost never uses tracer rounds, mashin egun belts usually hold one tracer per 3 or 5 rounds.
Having tracers is supposed to help you aim at night, but having too many or only these would quickly turn into a disadvantage as the enemy can also see them and easily determine where they are fired from

I am not sure if it was made with synth or an actual instrument, but what you spotted as synth sounded like a theremin, an old electric instrument where you control the sound by moving your hand above the device causing disturbances in an magnetic field.
On the Final Solution there are bigger parts played with it.

Regarding your question on "storm troopers". the term "storm troopers" is not specifically a Nazi term for their soldiers. its just a name for specific German units originating in WW1 who were tasked with assaulting enemy positions, the term just simply carried over towards WW2. Storm troopers is just another one of many in which Lucas's Star Wars very clearly took ideas from history, specifically ancient Rome and Nazi Germany.

    • @wepntech

they also called canadians and others stormtroopers. its more general use for hard ass assaulters or stormers or storm troopers whp storm a position like a storm probably during a storm... swap assault for storm it still works.

  • @wepntech
    @wepntech 2 ปีที่แล้ว

storm troopers is a reference to storming a position quick as a storm and perhaps during a storm as in wind rain thunder lightning or snow... we canadians are or where used to crappy weather so made great storm troopers during the great war and others. even now I am unbotherred by weather that keep others inside. I can work through a storm... nothing new. and the word storm is a synonym for assault or attack. but indicates also that the position is being taken like a storm takes and changes ground.

nope, they were never division strength, and they were not used in ww2. western media have often incorrectly labeled ww2 german and nazi troops as storm troopers but they were never called that by the germans. even the men of storm battalions were called storm-battalion men instead of troopers (mann in the 30s vs truppen in ww1)

Knights cross: There were three versions of the Iron Cross, the Knights Cross being the highest one. 'Oak Leaves', 'Swords' and 'Diamonds' were given as upgrades to the Knights Cross. The Knights Cross was looked at as at the Medal of Honour or the Victoria Cross. But it was given for deeds, which not only required valour, but also had greater influence on war or needed a great skill of leadership. Well, the Nazis established a quite complicated system of honours with medals and badges for a thousand things. It was one of there ways to sustain power. For WW II it is enough to remember the Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) (with 1st, 2nd class and the Knights Cross (Ritterkreuz)), the 'Nahkampfspange' (Close-Combat-Clip in bronze, silver, and gold) and the "Verwundetenabzeichen" (a black oval badge for receiving an injury; pretty much like the Purple Heart) in three classes again.

So, a little background information about the Wehrmachts "7th Panzer Division". As you probably know, befor Germany invaded France they have invated Poland. The Poland invasion was done by the "Light Divisions". A "Light Division" was the german name for light tank divisions. After the Poland invasion the "Light Divisions" were re-classified into "Panzer Divisions".
The "7th Panzer Division" was before a part of the "2nd Light Division" which has invaded Poland.

There is a lot more flying around than what you see in night photos. Only every few rounds is a tracer round made to light up like that. And I doubt rifle rounds at the time had any tracers because that would not help. So basically all you see is every 3-5 machine gun rounds. The idea was to help the shooter see where rounds are going so with a weapon only able to fire 5-8 times before a reload it wouldn't be practical.

  • @jeffbudd7678

The Iron Cross was in use during WW1 and implemented by Kaiser Wilhelm. It was the equivalent of the US Medal of Honor. Upon entering WW2 the medal was redesigned and multiple tiers were added along with a new version to replace Iron Crosses that solider who fought in both wars may have been awarded. For WW2 there is the Iron Cross first class, Iron Cross second class and the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knights Cross was the highest honor a nazi soldier could be awarded and was worn around the neck, under the shirt collar, as shown in the picture they showed. The first class and second class were pinned to the tunic with the second class being attached to a ribbon (if the recipient had also won an Iron Cross in ww1 the ribbon would also have a clasp featuring the Nazi Eagle and the year 1939 being grasped by the eagles talons. The first class was simply pinned through the soldiers tunic and had several different pin backs depending on the manufacturer. Germany continued using a tiered medal system for the majority of its awards including the War merit cross, the German Mothers Cross and so forth.

The French had some forts along the frontier before WWI. During the war they dug trenches and built defences, but it was between the wars they went to town and created a comprehensive system. It wasn't considered necessary to extend it through the Ardennes forest as it would be too difficult to push an army through the. Guess where the Germans attacked? But as the video explain's, it was a small mobile force that penetrated there, not a whole army. It was enough.

As for "Stormztoopers" - it's complicated.
They descent from General von Hurtier's assault battalltions in the Great War - mobile smal, company level or below all (infantry) arms formation, equipped with carbines, tons of handgrenades, high cap pistol-carbines, later the initial submachine-guns, trench clubs and knives acting independent of hifher command on initiative.
Those where the spearheads of the 1918 "Kaiserschlacht" which almost won the war in the west.
As they bleed themselfes dry in the advance this didn't occur, but the style remained and was cultivated in the interbellum.
Similar tactics became everyone's smal unit tactics after the War so they don't seem special *today* .
The NSDAP later called it's street brawling wing of polotical hooligans stormtrooprs which, like everything they touched, sullied the phrase..,
Also... the *Knight's Cross* is the higher officers version of the *Iron Cross* . It eventually came in a couple of higher grades, signified by their, pardon me, "bling-level":
    With Oak Leaves
    With Oak Leaves and Swords
With Oak Leaves Swords and Diamonds
With *Golden* Oak Leaves Swords and Diamonds (awarded only once to figher ace Hans-Ulrich Rudel)
    Hope this was helpful.
    Best regards

its not so mutch bleeding dry but that there was no centralised effort after the breackthrough which allowed the allies to recover and counter attack. its why ww2 german tactics so heavy focused on well 'focus-points' (schwerpunkt) in their doctrine. to ensure such wasted breakthroughs would never happen again.
also the SA were never stormtroopers, they were storm battalions (sturmabteilung) and their men were called storm battalion men (Sturmabteilung-mann) not stormtroopers (sturm/stosstruppen), its allied media that dumbed them stormtroopers because storm-men and storm-battalion-men don't sound as threatening.

    • @RaoulKunz1
      @RaoulKunz1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True.
      In both cases.
I honestey admit to have unintentionally reproduced Allied media perceptions and terminology in spite of better knowlege.
I blame the late time of the day! Erm, yes! Totally!😉
I also should have mentioned that the failure of the 1918 offensive was operational and strategic, not tactical.
Though I maintain the fact that the assaukt formations depleted themselfs substantially in the initial breakthrough operations (Citino, Robert M. in "The German Way of War").
I would also like to add that the offensive was rather typical of the Prussian/German preference for Bewegungskrieg to either acheive instant operational succes to a degree that it nulliefies strategic considerations by a devestating victorey and subsequently fails to maintain the strategic initiative should it fail.
It's a pattern we see again and again from the Silesian Wars up to the World Wars and it's also present in the Cold War era planing for a "super Kursk" of theater wide extremely fast, flowing operations to blunt the Soviet thrust come hell or high water, further conaiderations where unneccessary anyhow, given the strategic damocles sword of tactical and probably later strategic nuclear strikes...
      Best regards

Storm troopers were initially part of the spearhead Prussian units in WW1 (Sturmtruppen). In the 20s and 30s the SA became the new storm troopers (Sturmabteilung). These were a paramilitary political unit causing terror and mayhem during elections in Weimar Germany. Eventually Hitler brought the SA under the wing of the NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) or National Socialist German Workers' Party after assassinating all the key leaders including Ernst Roehm it’s leader. The SA came under the umbrella of Himmler’s SS (Schutzstaffel) ‘protection squad’. Under Himmler they were regimented and brought under control. Storm troopers generally were the military units under the Wehrmacht (German Army), and the SA called themselves this though they weren’t necessarily part of the army.

The Iron Cross is a cross symbol typically in black with a white or silver outline that originated after 1219 when the Kingdom of Jerusalem granted the Teutonic Order the right to combine the Teutonic Black Cross placed above a silver Cross of Jerusalem.
The Iron Cross was used as the symbol of the German Army from 1871 to March/April 1918, when it was replaced by the bar cross. The Iron Cross was reintroduced as an award in the German Army in 1939 with a Swastika added in the center during the Third Reich in World War II. In 1956, the Iron Cross resumed its German military usage, as it became the symbol of the Bundeswehr, the modern German armed forces. The traditional design is black and this design is used on armored vehicles and aircraft.

The Stormtroopers were a specific special force from the German army that were developed at the end of WW1. They used new tactics and even the first bullet proof west invented by Germans. The idea was Aggressiveness, Speed and Deadlines so they were the best of the best and not normal infantry. They were supposed to get around enemy trenches and clean them up.
Also a cool fact that they had new tactics that still many countries use today. So they were very modern like everything what the Germans invented and did ;-)
And yes they were a great inspiration for the Star wars Stormtrooper.

Hey could you please do a reaction of The Final Solution by Sabaton, of course the song and the history channel. I could even propose that you could try to listen to the song first and then watch the video, because (maybe it's just my opinion) but those small parts of the song ruin the surprise and overall reaction during the original song, cuz you kind of know how the song will sound.
I would love to see you watch the whole channel and do reactions since I love TimeGhost, Sabaton and your interesting reactions + opinions. As a Pole I choose The Final Solution because its a important topic about the mass genocide in Polish territory of Poles, Polish Jews and more unwanted groups or ethnicities. It's also not only about the Jews since most of them if not almost all were Polish and they lived here. The Polish country lost the biggest percentage of their population during WW2, around 15% so every 7 people, 1 has died then. It's a hard topic but thats why I would love to see your take since I personally love the song and the tragedy it wants to tell. It has that Sabaton vibe but it still makes it so tragic and serious rather than upbeat which imo is absolutely great. Love your reactions!

Already been said to exhaustion probably, but Stormtroopers, or Strumtruppen, were first conceived in mid-late WW1. They would however go on to influence bewegungskrieg, lit. Maneuver Warfare, and what English speakers call Blitzkrieg. However, the Nazis cannot claim ownership of the development of bwegungskrieg. IIRC, the first experiments with bewegungskrieg-like tactics in Germany were in the 1920s. Hitler wouldn’t launch his successful coup, yes there had been one other in the mid 20s, until 1933, by which point quite a bit of work had gone into the development of bewegungskrieg and the thought process accompanying it. Interestingly enough, another German tactical doctrine, auftragstaktik or mission type tactics, would be so effective it would influence the doctrine of the US, UK, and basically any NATO member.

yes this is the begining 1940 before north africa. also the ghost division was not deployed North Africa, it was sent to Russia, Rommel was promoted and given a different set of units for that operation.
also storm troopers are named after ww1 german troops not nazis, the nazis never had troops officially called storm troopers (that is infact an allied nickname for them based on ww1 germans. just like the allied nickname for ww2 german machineguns was inhereited from ww1)
the maginot line didn't exist in ww1 but it was built in the same effective area the french had a ton of fortresses in ww1 (not far from the german-french border), infact one of the major battles of ww1 was fought at one such fortress on the meuse river (verdan)

The events took place in May 1940. When the Germans assaulted France and the low countries. The blitzkrieg.
They came up with stormtroopers in WWI. They were the assault troops whose job it was to crack open the defences. They would leave isolated strong point's, prisoners, casualties or any other distractions to the followin troops. Their aim was to keep going. The term was also used in WWII and most people associate it with that conflict now.
Anglais is French for English. The French troops, seeing the unfamiliar uniform, were asking who this commanding figure was.
( I have read that the term Yankee might be a corruption of the word. The native Americans heard it being used by the French colonial's about the English settlers, and adopted it as a description of the new arrivals on the continent. )
Fighting at night is pretty risky. I've done night exercises, it's dark, if you've been moved to the area it's unfamiliar you don't know where you are or the layout of the terrain. You don't know who or what is creating any noises you hear, if you try and move, you bump into things, trip up, or fall into unseen ditches. The whole experience can be a living nightmare. When the shooting starts there are flashes in the darkness, bangs and crashes, but you haven't got a target to shoot at, and you've no idea where the enemy is. Have they got around behind you? It's a lonely, chaotic, confusing and frightening experience.

"Sturm" (storm) is just the general German term for assault (to storm at something). So storm troopers are simply assault troops, but somewhat wrongly translated. The word is not directly associated with the 3rd Reich, because it was used in a military context long before, yet the Nazis favoured it greatly and designated almost everything a Sturm-something (including the "Volkssturm", which definitely sounded better than "last-ditch effort rabble troops"). Most notable are of course the higher officer ranks in the SS, which were themed als "Sturmführer" or assault leaders.
