i played both versions of this game using snes9x, and jesus the game is much darker in japan. granted, i couldn't understand the text, i just remembered where everything was, but even the sprites looked more offensive and darker.
With religious references in EarthBound. They're some lines of text that say "Heaven" they probably didn't want to censor the word out because we believe that when we die we go to to heaven. But the censored other religious words out like: Hell, Death, The Devil, Demons, and God. Most likely because these words were related to religion, but Heaven is sometimes related. The only instance they didn't censor out "Death" was during the final battle when Paula's prayer reached Dalaam when a girl woke up from a dream that prince Poo died. Most likely because since it was not in normal gameplay instead in a short prayer cutscene because thats what can happen in dreams. An instance where The Devil, or Demons wasn't censored out was The Devils Machines because it didn't relate to the Devil a lot because it's just an contraption. Demons were used in the Squatter Demon enemy because it's just an enemy that is very dark, scary, and powerful.
