Bent Lamination Forms

  • There is a correction to the lamination formula given in the video. The formula is
    Y=amount of springback
    X=depth of chord desired to bend
    N=number of layers to be laminated.
    Y=X/(N*N)
    Sorry I had written it wrong in the video.
    Many woodworking projects call for curved parts.
    How to get those parts depends on what kind of wood you are working with and what is needed of the part. For my current project I need some back slats for a set of dining chairs I was commissioned to build and needed to make a new form to build them. So come along with me and watch how I make and use these forms to get my curved parts. It may just inspire you to try making something with curves.
    The equation I mention during the film is very helpful at anticipating spring-back so here it is.
    Y=X(NxN)
    Y is the amount of spring-back expected
    X is the arc height from the baseline
    N is the number of plys used in the form.
    If your numbers show that you have 1/4" spring-back expected you can adjust the distance in 1/4" on the base line to account for this.
    Remember that when you are laminating these up there is material in the middle which creates two different radius on either side of the material, so plan for how wide the material you are using is and draw out the curves accordingly.
