    For price conversion: I can't divide by 50 but I can double the price and divide by 100.

    PureGold has been a warehouse grocery stores since 1980s. I think S&R existed during the early 200s, when the Philippines passed a law to open the country's retail industry for foreign investments and retail operators. The warehouse giant PureGold bought this S&R or former SmartPrice? an American Costco warehouse grocery store that was established in the early of 2000s, and was operated under an American private equity firms. Then PureGold has a long plan of expansion of their PureGold brand and its portfolio. So PureGold bought the entire stakes of S&R grocery warehouse and rebranded it to S&R Memberships.

    Great video, I actually watched a couple S&R videos by Filipino bloggers this week. They focus on filling the cart with cookies and sweats, not the products we miss from home.

      Interesting! I think many Filipinos are not willing to pay the 700 pesos membership fee. Just a guess. I wish they had San Francisco Bay coffee here like at Costco!

    My wife has been after me to join Costco or Sam's club but the members fee is too high and the portions are too much for just 2 people. Everything is about 20% to 30% more expensive than in the States, which is reasonable--I suppose. Every year, I stress about sending a Balikbayan box to my Mom bc I pack stuff like an anal-retentive, mad woman. S & H Balikbayan box alone is already $100, so it is more cost-effective for one to send cash $$ and have them shop at S&R. I spend $300 for one BBB, and all the time and energy (stress) I exert packing the darn thing. Next year, I will just send cash ...and be done!

    Loved the video, except for one thing... Dairy! I have plans to move to the Phils, and I have a serious milk and cheese addiction. I have heard that refrigerated pasteurized milk is a rarity there, except for "shelf-stable boxed and non-refrigerated milk" that sucks. And that cheese is very hard to come by. Just those 2 items alone are practically a deal-breaker for me! LOL. While I greatly enjoyed and appreciated all you showed, I was waiting with bated breath (and taste buds) for the dairy section.
    I was quite pleased that many of my long-time enjoyable foods will be quite attainable! Thanks!
    By the way, I did a bit of Google searching about S&R and found that in the Manila Metro and surrounding areas, you can't swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting one of S&R's many locations.
    P.S. One of the things I noticed about many of the steaks that you showed, while the cost per pound was about 30% lower than in my local supermarkets here, many of the steaks showed rather poor fat marbling, which suggested to me that perhaps those steaks were, among the USA grading I'm used to, Prime, Choice, Select, Standard, Commercial, Utility, Cutter and Canner, I'm guessing were in the Select to Standard range.

    We went to one in Pasay or nearby my brother inlaw was keen to show us much bigger than anything we have where we live in Australia they even sold car tyres good brands as well not rubbish. The jumbo american sized packaging was a new thing to me eg the cereal boxes were twice the size of our largest ones here in Australia. A thing i have learnt about filipinos is they seem to think if it is imported it is better and a lot will pay more for an imported product than a locally made product. Prime example i have seen them pay more for a bottle of coke that was imported from the US when the locally made coke is a fraction of the price. We only shopped at S&R once on our last trip i would rather go to robinsons or somewhere rather than pay a higher price for an imported product, but it is certainly an experience going to one of these stores we don't even have a costco in the state we live in they are only interested in servicing areas with a large population.

    • @sanjuanlaunionvlog
      @sanjuanlaunionvlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah.. S & R isn't by us in La Union. They do only service high population areas.. esp with high numbers of expats! Its nice to shop around in.. get some American hard to find items. But.. I think you can get better deals and have less stuff go bad if you just go to Pure Gold or Robinsons... If you have a Family of 4 or more.. S and R is a better deal for sure!

      You do realize that the Philippines is its own independent country? With its own currency? The Philippines gets expats from everywhere around the world, with the US only being a minor percentage of the overall number of foreigners. So which foreign currency should they choose? Or list ALL of them on the price sticker?
      You can always carry a pocket calculator, and/or no doubt there is a calculator app on your smartphone. I don't have a smartphone, but I'll bet there is an app out there where you can enter in any "exchange rate" and then when you enter the local currency price, you will then get an immediate conversion.

      True, people would think that Philippines is very cheap to retire but look at the prices of the property they overpriced without any appliances. the Philippines is not listed as a retirement country in the world.
      In the USA, you buy a house appliances comes with it , you will just move in and bring your bed and bathroom items.
      if you are used to eat imported goods in the Philippines then its much cheaper to live here in the retirement places in the USA than to live in the Philippines. the grocery stores here sell buy one get one free but not in the Philippines. some Americans gets foods stamps and social security assistance but not in the Philippines. When you are in the critical care, no one would cure you in the hospital without putting money cash on the spot for at least half a million pesos. Behind the neon lights from a high rise establishments/condominiums/hotels yet there are so many local people are in poverty life. Without the help of some charity/foundation groups and some other people those people are hopeless.

      It's nice to see brand name products from the country of your origin, but those products do come with a premium price tag attached to them. Many premade products (foods) from the US, have additives and preservatives unfit for human consumption. But many people buy these products because they taste so delicious! Not realizing the harm those ingredients are doing, until it is too late. Too many households do not cook food from scratch. They buy processed meals in the store, and they call that home cooked meals. Smart shoppers cook meals from hand me down recipes. Processed foods have very little nutritional value what so ever. It's great to eat a Big Mac, or Quarter Pounder now and then, but not every day of the week!

Then rebranded the company's name S&R to S&R Memberships. No relations to Costco or Sam's Club. I think maybe through this US private equity deals that we see American CostCo products.
