It’s a bit late for you Don, but you can actually fly direct from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin. There’s about 4 flights a week on Air Asia and the airport is only 10/15 minutes out of the town centre.
Nice to hear you give a mention to Swords, I lived and worked there for two years. I live in Hua Hin now 😁

Hello John. I passed that airport in Hua Hin. Unfortunately I booked a package deal that included the taxi journeys from Bangkok. If I went again, I would do it more independently. Are you living there long John ? 👍😊🇮🇪🇹🇭

For me Hua Hin has all you need, been visiting since 2010 and made the decision a couple of years ago to live here. 👍🏻
