Carbon Graphite Foam Experiment (Dehydration of Sucrose)

  • This experiment is the dehydration of sucrose, or the carbon graphite foam experiment. What happens is sulfuric acid is added to sugar. Once they come into contact they acid starts to pull the hydrogens and oxygens off the carbon ring leaving a black carbon foam. This reaction is a lot like the elephant toothpaste reaction.
    Reaction begins at 4:06.

You don't have a clue about what graphite is...did you? "Doctors"? in what field? Literature?

Reminds me of the 4th july black snakes fireworks when we were kids in the 50s.

graphitization of any carbon requires non-oxidizing atmosphere at high temps.

Can you do this with Hydrochloric instead of Sulphuric Acid, to avoid the Hydrogen Sulphide? Would Molasses be a better candidate than the granulated sugar, the liquid mixing better with the acid? Could you do another video, showing the electron microscopy of the foam, or grains milled from it, and checking the electrical conductivity of the substance?

You can do this experiment with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) too. I do it at low temp (380 F) hydro-thermally with glucose (single molecular ring).

@@bio-cell2571 do you know if it is possible to make high-density foam, which wouldn't be foam anymore. I need to make a crucible out of carbon so it could hold any matter at high temperature

This reaction is not driven by the acidity, it's due to sulfuric acid's extreme affinity for water. A strong dehydrating agent like calcium oxide or phosphorus pentoxide _might_ produce similar results. HCl would most likely just hydrolyze the sucrose to glucose and fructose (aka invert sugar). Ascorbic acid would do neither. That dude was probably just making burnt sugar lol.

@@whatelseison8970 PO5 will indeed do it, but it's a bit more awkward to work with. H2SO4 I expect, is a lot more accessible to most people (except in the UK and EU 😭).

    Hi guys and good vid.
Question, simular to making carbon fibrer, how to use this??? I mean do i need to infuse with resin to make hard/ strong yet super lightweight? Its so soft and brittle how to strengthen it as one would carbon fiber?
    Thanks in advance.

This is a completely different form of carbon. It's not even graphitic. They're mistaken.

How so? It's literally the first thing they give you if you ingest something toxic (oral drug overdose, accidental ingestion of poisons, etc).
