Stapleford - “Ford Marked by Posts”
For the second time on TVI we’re in a place called Stapleford. Last time we were in Lincolnshire in a tiny village close to the A46. This time, we’re to the West of Nottingham, and the two places are like chalk and cheese. Their names mean the same thing though. Lincolnshire’s version referred to a ford on the River Witham. Here in Nottinghamshire, the river in question is the Erewash which forms the county boundary with Derbyshire.
It was thanks to that river and the River Trent, that Stapleford was able to grow. It was a vitally important settlement for trade. Wool, hides of beasts, wine, corn, grain, and other exotic or foreign merchandize were transferred, carried or conveyed to be sold right here in this town. The area also expanded in the late 18th century when the stocking hose trade thrived in the Midlands.
Its famed mostly for the 200 million year old Hemlock Stone near its Northern boundary. Parts of Stapleford owe their existence to the French. Without them, there wouldn’t be a town centre.
Let’s walk and discover why!

Hi Andy.
So much to see ..
Brilliant video
Thanks.
Another very interesting video. Many thanks.
Really enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing it, and thank you for coming to Stapleford as well.
your presenting is brilliant. really informative and well structured. liked & subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
I lived on an estate named after assassinated US Presidents (on Kennedy Drive). I went to Albany Junior School (Headmasters Mr Watts and Mr Blanchard) when it was made of wood and briefly Bramcote Grammar. Used to play round Hemlock stone. My Dad managed Bramcote Sports centre. The premier shop used to be a VG store. I remember Hickings Lane rec. I think Dave Watson’s Dad ran a sports shop, Victory Sports. Moved away when I was 11 years old.
The houses opposite Andy’s fish bar are lacemakers houses. The lace was made on the third floor, hence the large windows. Hope you enjoyed your visit!
The house at 124 has a listed building in the back garden where they used to work. I believe it's completely derelict and unsafe to go in.
Batches....another name for them. That's what a woman in Coventry called bread buns anyway 🙂
It really is an age old debate
It's a COB, a Circle Of Bread.🤣🤣
Staple is an old English word for a market. So , a market by a ford!
No. Wrong I'm afraid.
The Old English word for market is "ceapen". That's why the prefix "Chipping" is used in many English place names, for example Chipping Norton.
Market itself is a Latin term - "Mercatus", which means "trade" in its simplest form.
In Stapleford's case, the "Staple" part derives from the word "Stapol", which means "pillar" or "post".
Further to this, Lincolnshire also has a Stapleford, who's derivation is exactly the same. That place is tiny, and has never had a market charter. You need a charter in order to hold a market.
There is a theory that the "pillar" or "post" in question here could be a market cross, but that's disputed.
@@TheVillageIdiot thank you for putting me right on this. We live and learn. 😉
