    After the clinching victory, that Tom Seaver interview saying 'we never put our heads between our legs ..we keep fighting was so well....amazing.

    R.I.P., Tom Seaver; also Bob Gibson (2:44) and Ron Perranoski (11:57)-- all passed away in 2020 (the latter two on the same day, October 2).

    The Mets in 1969 caused me, a die hard 12 year old Cub fan, great pain and suffering and probably interfered with my emotional and psychologicl development. I finally recovered in 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series.

    Ironic that Dave Johnson would make the final out in this series, considering he was the Mets' manager in 1986 when they won their second title.

      And in 1969 he threw to first to nail the runner for the 3rd out in Baltimore's only win in game 1...weird isn't?

      Also, at the end of the 1985 season (the 2nd straight in which the Mets) finished second in the division (and out of the postseason, as the wild card wasn't then in existence), he called a team meeting and said "Let's make up our minds that we're going to win it all next year," which they did. that's also what Earl Weaver told the '69 Orioles, who lost the WS to the Mets. In 1970, the Birds did just that, beating the Reds 4 games to 1 in that series. Also, Baltimore went 108-54 that year, as did the '86 Mets. Quite dominating.

    • @mrvantagepro
      @mrvantagepro ปีที่แล้ว

      It's also ironic that Jerry Koosman, who threw the last pitch to win the 69' World Series, was later traded for Jesse Orosco, who threw the last pitch to win the 1986 World Series.

    I went to my first big league game in the summer of '69. It was the Cubs at Wrigley Field and it was Ken Holtzman's no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves.

    Such great coverage--but I can't believe they left out Al Weis's home run that tied up game 5 of the World Series 3-3. That was as crucial as it was improbable (and as stunning to the Orioles as anything that series).

    Imagine if the Mets did not trade Ryan away. Imagine a pitching rotation of Seaver, Koosman, Ryan, and then in 1973 have Matlack. Would have been another World Series Title.

    • @TheBrooklynbodine
      @TheBrooklynbodine ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. As it was, they pushed the World Series to a game 7, and had all other factors remained the same, they'd have been the worst team (82-79) to win a World Series. That distinction belongs to the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals, who enroute to a 4 games to 1 WS win, went 83-78.

    I was a 5th grader when the 69 series was played. My teacher Mrs Tracy was a huge Mets fan and had a tv set in our classroom and she allowed us students to watch the series while we studied and it was a great big deal.

    I'm a live long Dodger fan but , 1969 , 1967 ,and 1975 were very special series.. I went in 1977 and 1978 and 2002 but the Dodgers losing bummed me out after going to all of those playoff and Series games. And 2002 only attended one game so it wasn't the same (as sweet as it was) but those other series kept me out of school. Mom knew how I felt about baseball.

    What always surprised me about this Tom Seaver Mets era, is that asides from 1969 when the Mets won 100 games (and the WS), the Seaver-Mets were never again an elite team, nor a great team, nor a good team. They were just an ok-team that won 82-86 games and missed the postseason.
    In 1973, they made the postseason thanks to a horrendous NL East, that the Mets won the division with like 82 wins, and almost won the World Series as well.
    But asides from 1969, the Mets during the Seaver-era were just an ok-team. I expected better from them, especially with all that elite pitching, and with the Yankees having an identify crisis.

  • @MGAF688

    The 1969 Baltimore Orioles had it all from coaching to players. They probably should have claimed 5 or 6 WS championships between the mid-60s and mid-80s. 69 was one that got away. 71, 73 and 79 as well. 80 and 81 ended up being narrow playoff misses despite a lot of wins.

      well 81 was an off year for them. also was a year of the players strike. But 80--they won 100 games but finished just a game or 2 behind the Yanks. In 73 and 74 they had best AL regular season record but no one as beating the A's in post season those years.

    Hard to believe a team that won 100 games was considered a huge underdog. Any time a team wins a 100 games that is a quality team. Sure they did not have the great hitting Baltimore had but they could pitch, play good D and play small ball.

      @@stevea6816 Great point on paper the orioles were a better team. And could have had a dynasty as they were in 3 straight World Series from 69 to 71. But like you said in a short series any team can win. You get great pitching and some hitter gets hot and it can happen. Plus the Mets made some amazing catches in the series.
