Tom and I went to the same high school. He probably knew more about sound than I've learned in the thirty-plus years since, and he gave me a lot of time and help, for which I'm grateful.
I ALWAYS record orchestras with an ORTF pair above the conductor's head and a bit back towards the audience. It's never failed me. Choirs, usually a spaced trio. I might add a soloist or piano mic but that's often just to make the conductor feel better. Thank you for sharing this!
It was a highly interesting presentation, thanks for uploading! I started to collect Mercury CDs and I have mixed feelings. I think these are usually well made recordings but not always. The Wilma Cozart Fine CD releases however are sometimes have serious problems. Editing is bad and what is even worse: these transfers are with full of clipping. I don't understand why they made this way, probably that early digital equipment didn't indicated that problem. In the worst case they sound even harsh (but it is rare fortunately). I've just ordered one of the Tom Fine's new box set (Kubelik and Chicago), I am very curious about it. Apart from these problems I love discovering these old recordings.
