Just-in-Time learning makes tools like SketchUp so valuable and easy to learn. Just-in-Case learning, a method used so much in the past, tends to overload the student with too much information, often at the wrong time. Thanks for such well thought out Just-in-Time modules!
WANTED TO ADD. I have been on SKU for self taught for years and am 60+ I wish I was OCD instead of ADHAD doing 60 storey building concepts etc. What you taught me about OUTLINER was the BEST EVER. I always get drawn into the model creation and make groups etc galore but most of the time forget to give them names. Yesterday this came to bite me in the bum very blatantly. I could NOT find two items that were not part of a bigger group I want to move and slide in an animation. THANK YOU SO MUCH now I have to spend x month to name all the groups in all my models I'll be done by 80 probably. But I promise myself I never ever will not name anything on my screen.
Very helpful. I appreciate your naming things with simple obvious names. I used to teach the same way with files named big dog, little dog etc. This tool is so powerful but I did not understand how useful it was. Thank you for taking time and effort to explain in a simple straight forward but complete manner. Making complex items simple to understand is the mark of a superior teacher. Thanks.
Very helpful, Justin. Thanks! SketchUp is powerful but intimidating for a beginner. Your systematic approach to explaining the tool makes it MUCH easier to start being productive.
You are one of the best teachers I've come across on TH-cam. Thanks so much for making these videos. My wife and I our designing and building our own home and I feel like every day I'm watching your videos and the content is right on point.
The mediocre teacher tells; The good teacher explains; The superior teacher demonstrates; but the greatest teacher inspires. You have inspired me to learn and use outliner. My sincere thank you for being a great teacher. Many blessings upon you from one who has been blessed by your instruction.
Great Video as alway mate , if you are making a cabinet would a side panel be a group or component ? I guess a component and the you group the L,R and rear ?? cheers Andy
Such a life saver! I hated doing windows and interiors cause it takes a lot of time and effort re-editing them. Thanks for making a video about groups and components!! I hope you make more videos!!
Wow, this is just a SUPER valuable feature that I didn't know was there. Granted, I'm pretty new to Sketchup, but man, this is something that a person really should know right off the bat. It sure would have made a lot of what I was doing a heck of a lot easier. Then again, having done it the hard way for a while makes me really appreciate the outliner. Thanks for the great tutorial!
This was rally helpful. I can see immediate uses and benefits. I especially like being able to find things which are hidden. I just need to learn to stay organized as my models grow. Thank for your efforts!!
I'm surprised more people don't focus on model organization using the outliner, as it definitely makes working in your models a lot easier. As you practice and use it more, it basically just becomes second nature. Thanks for watching!
Hello! Justin. I just had an interview with a big company last weekend. I had Friday, and all weekend to prepare for it. I used Revit and SketchUp. They wanted to see 'a rendering of a plan.' It turns out that it was a side angle (SketchUp rendering) of an apartment. I reminded the man that this 'angle' is what used-to-be an Axonometric drawing. This could be a job.
Great Information...I wish that I had learned this earlier. So now to the lack of organization, I've worked myself into a box with the lid closed. What i'd like to know is how to open the box to see the light?
Like this explanation of features but … I just downloaded the 30 day trial of Sketchup Pro 2023 and I can’t find the outliner. I’m feeling like I’m wasting hours looking for answers and the 1,000’s of videos and discussions are spread out across a different product ( Pro, Make, Layout, Previous versions every year, etc). How can i find specifically the answers to the product/ year (version) I’m using? 3:493:49
Once an abject is grouped or nested grouped, how do you know that it is ready for editing ? And 2nd question is : why when using explode command on an object of component, it modifies that object only and not all components ?
I guess I don't understand the first question - if you're talking about when you can edit the faces of the object itself, it will be whenever you can select the individual parts of the object (lines, faces) - For the second question - if you're exploding the overall individual component, it will work on that instance only by unlinking it from the other copies of that component. If you're exploding something grouped WITHIN the component, it will affect ever other instance as well. Hopefully that made sense
Hey Justin, Is there a way to un group? Say that you forgot to group individual items and then realized that you didn't want them in the larger group and wanted to put them in a smaller group or edit them what can you do? I have a drawing the I forgot to group different components as I went along now I need to edit certain parts of the group but it is affecting the whole group. What do I do?
I like these intro with the boxes growing and shifting, what software did you use to achieve this? Simple but cool! I am trying to get into After Effects, that's why I am asking!
How helpful was this info? Really really helpful!! But I'm away from my pc so my question is "is outliner available in SU Make or only Pro?" I've looked a lot for some sort of editing tool for components a lot....been really irritating not being able to find anything edit functional. Thanks Justin
Thank you so much for your videos...great info always. Is it possible to make a group of items a component so that changing individual items within the group will also change if you change one of them? I can make it a component but changing one item doesn't change the others....thanks!
I'm going to start using this tool tomorrow. Is there a good Facebook Group that shares pictures of their models. Please leave link. I'm very good at Grouping now. I knew about components, but didn't know how to use it. The reason I didn't use it, I wasn't good enough to start using this tool, and fill I'm ready to move to the next level now.
hi man, I have small issue, for some reason if i 3ple click my objects to create component after i name it, and hit enter i noticing that it is still "exploded thing".. i have to 1st make a group and than change to component.. did you ever heard that happenn it is kind of annoying as is changing my routines ... help..
Justin clear presentations. I am curious about the tool display and how it differs from the free sketchup version I want use with my secondary students. The one I have at app.sketchup.com/app?hl=en# shows tools in black & white and has the ones on the left vertical panel "menued" vs. your video display of color and tools all along each frame of the screen. Is there a technique I can use to get my working screen closer to your tutorial screen. It would help the students find and use tools more quickly. Thanks
Not really - the online version just fundamentally looks different than the desktop version - the keyboard shortcuts work in a similar fashion though...
@@Thesketchupessentials , thanks for info. I have limited experiences, so.sorry if this question sounds naive. Can I assume that all commands you use are there, just organized in different places on the online version?
Generally, but not always - for example - I don't know if the outliner (the topic of this videos) is available in the SketchUp for Schools version - that said, most of the modeling tools, like shapes, push pull, follow me, etc will be very similar. I think your materials application will be significantly different - it's kind of a case by case thing, and I don't know super well just because I use the desktop version
@@Thesketchupessentials I see. I noticed people were real worked up about the inability to use extensions on the online version. I am not real clear what "extensions" are. Can you give me an example of what they are and how its used?
Extensions allow you to add functions to the desktop version of SketchUp - Shape Bender is an example - th-cam.com/video/NHRUNGOiH0k/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgwxTXqQu9vjWKWw0t94AaABAg
Hi Justin, amazing channel. Thanks so much for this! Have you any idea why materials and colours change across groups even if only a single item is being edited? I deleted and re-added elements and groups, but the problem stays. Thanks again!

How would you take 100 of the cylinders that are currently unique and turn them into a component. So that I can modify 1 to change all 100?
