These pickups are special. I put them recently in a pretty light weight alder Strat with rosewood fretboard and they are just amazing clean and with overdrive. Tone control on the bridge and neck pickup, middle pickup without tone control. Every pickup selection sounds different and some great bite from the bridge pickup. Works like a champ for classic rock lead (ZZ Top). Great cleans as well. I cannot wish anything better for this Strat.
Great pickups for clean tones, They produce this typical, unique strat sound which can make adicted. I have them too. Thanks for the demo! Sound is very much like demonstrated.
Superb set. Have these in my 2 piece SB Alder Fender Strat for a few years now. Never looked back! The also sound amazing drenched in reverb... great for those early 60's Surf tones....
Yay! A performance review that is as good as the pick ups themselves; also with nice feel for each position. I have these Surfari's in 3 of my ("strat style") Natuur Shui Custom Classic's (mahogany/rosewood, light ash/maple and dense ash/maple), and they are all simply "hair-raisingly" fantastic.
Yes , classic blues more polished sound, very good mids présence, great for blues ! great pickups with great level ! But I prefer the caractère of thé surfari too !
I have a strat with Surfaris and they are excellent. Great for Frusciante, Mayer, Gilmour tones. Just got a set of Classic Blues and I'm liking them too.
That would be this set, if by that you're implying the various live versions of his - the recorded version was cut using a Gibby ES 335. Then "Virginia" and most other Strats used to play CoD are supposed to feature the diMarzio HS2 (w. dummy coil disconnected) in bridge position and it has a rather unique flavour to it. If staying with Tonerider the Pure Vintage bridge is somewhat along those lines though.
7 years late, but the The Classic Blues are most similar to the Eric Johnson Fender Signature pickups in terms of basic specs. Classic Blues - Neck 6.3 2.4 Middle 6.4 2.5 Bridge 7 3 and EJ Sig - 5.9 2.6 6.4 2.6 6.8 3
kind sir, the polite sound of that bridge pick up is what I am looking for, and your playing was very sweet and insipring. was that tune someone's song or just your random stuff? it was touching.
Thanks for the kind words. All of the clips I recorded for the Tonerider pickups were thought up with on the spot. Some of them to try and emulate another guitarist or just what came to mind listening to the sound of each pickup. Check out and subscribe to my channel for more. Cheers.

Great neck pickup this Surfari. My Charvel San Dimas has a vintage vibe with this...
Awesome playing and great Tone great Sounding pickups ❤🎸👍
Had a set of these in a strat I sold. I miss them Bad. My current strat has a set of TR Classic Blues in it, but I definitely prefer the Surfari's.
Classic blues still sound great !

These seem to have a more jangly sound than say compared to alnico 5 pickups. A bit less full sounding but sweet sounding.
I just got a Squier CV 50s strat in white with these pickups. They have their own sound for sure !
Thanks for this.
Torn between these and the Pure Vintage set. Anyone who's tried both ?
Great demo! What i wanted to ask was which of the TRS series would you recommend for the john mayer or a john frusciante tone?

@@bumblefritz thanks for the info, I'm thinking of getting surfaris exactly for Frusciante and Mayer tones =)
Which Tonerider model will het me close to Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover tone?

Oh, and don't forget to leave the mid pickup sans tone control - separate tone knobs for bridge and neck only.
