We learned over the years to leave the old water tube grommets in the inner exhaust. Why? Because the new grommets would soon swell up and clog the water passages again. Instead, take a very sharp knife with a small blade and run it around the inside of the old grommet while it is in place. If you do it properly you will trim a round ring of rubber out of the old grommet and your water passages will never clog again. Good to go forever after that. Thanks for a great video, Michael.

Unfortunately Leeroy passed from my simple search but that site is stationary/down, i just won a 83 nine point nine at auction less than 50 had no hood but found one local a 15hp hood, a mouse had chewed the coil wires so i fix them and it started up with water, now i am looking for a small aluminum boat to put it on and a SS prop down the road it it runs well, a compression check i got 105 top 96 bottom so it's maybe so so have fun

I am very happy to win the hat. Thank you so much. Another good video and you must have spent a lot of money on parts for that Evinrude. Maybe that is the big secret. Lol.

Quote of the video “tight as a frogs butthole” 😂 love the videos! just finished putting new pistons in my 85 15 horse Johnson and watching these videos inspired me to give it a shot! First ever motor rebuild for me. Next step is to start it and see if she runs. Thanks for doing what you do!

just did a water pump impellor on my 77 Johnson 35 was easy after watching you explain while doing it. And rebuilt the carb also easy peasy now need water in the lakes to test it out...Lakes here in California are extremely low...It is on a 14 foot runabouut does about 30 with me in it alone...

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina It is certainly improving. We are currently hovering around 5C to 10C daily. That would be approximately 40F to about 50F.
It definitely is spring time. The spring Rainbow Trout creek runs are opening in 3 weeks this month. Walleye opens two weeks after that in mid May. I can actually hear the old 35HP Johnson calling me from the cottage. She wants to get out on the lake badly. A month later, Bass opens as well in June. Can't wait!

Arrrg I’ll have to find the video where you fix the skeg tip. I’m missing the piece on this 15hp evinrude I got. Just find a big chunk of aluminum? As a novice just starting to work on a couple engines, I greatly appreciate your videos. Put Giveaway in the thumbnail picture next time you do one and make people subscribe and comment. Seen other channels get lots of subscribers that way. I’m from south MS and little old 2 strokes are greatly prized around here. You’ve had a few videos that really helped me and made me a fan. please keep making these. Thanks

Just some ideas food for thought.
IMHO I would change the 2 lower crank/drive shaft seals and an o-ring while you have power head off to make sure you don't have a leak on crankshaft or drive shaft later they are in the cap with the 3 screws bolted to lower crank area it might also help to keep the worn driveshaft protected by keeping the grease you apply to top of driveshaft on it when you put it back together. Those parts are fairly cheap I just did mine.
I also just put a 15hp stinger pipe onto a 9.9hp and the water grommet was indeed melted restricting water entering the power head so it is a good idea to change them as you plan to. I also added a 15hp all metal carb to that engine which is a 1985 and it is running very well. I plan to try and take the 9.9hp metal carb I pulled off that engine and put it onto a 1989 8hp engine that came with the plastic carb and no choke but primer set-up . I will swap the high speed jet from the 8hp carb to 9.9hp it has the same/close venturi/throat size it will be a good experiment. I'm not wild about the primer set-up.
Also when you are tightening the screws or carb plastic parts they are numbered with torque sequence 1 2 3 4 5 6 etc that helps to prevent cracking. I just barely tighten them you can use a little thread lock to keep from overtightning them.
I would have been tempted to use or at least try to use the Original JB (black grey) weld on the cracked carb bowl on the outside by sanding it, cleaning it with acetone then applying the JB Weld and letting it set-up at least 24 hours. It is terrific stuff I think it would have fixed your issue with that hairline crack on fuel bowl. I have used it in the 1980's on 6 gallon Johnson metal fuel tanks before with leaks around the lower lip where they put them together. and it stopped leaking for years. If nothing else it would be a good experiment maybe giving you a back-up bowl for carb.
The top plate of your carb where yours is warped doesn't seem to be a critical area of carb IMHO when I was working on one yesterday I looked hard in that area but if it still wouldn't run right after fixing the carb bowl I would have been tempted to try using a heat gun with (top carb cover gasket removed) a small clamp to try and get it to go as flush as I can with the top plastic piece on top of carb if it wouldn't run correctly but it was running correctly I suspect the reason it stopped running correctly was the fuel was running out of the bowl or being forced out by the fuel pump at a quick rate. You might have been able to put another hole back there and drill and tap that part of carb to get that corner to go down as they added a screw hole in later years.
That second hole you showed us on the carb bowl is most likely for a fuel primer set-up and will need to have a screw and red washer put into it to prevent fuel from just running out bottom of bowl. The 1989 8hp I was working on yesterday has a fuel line to a connector there and then it goes to the primer assembly and from there to the top of reed valves through a small brass tube and when you pull primer it shoots fuel into the reed valve area this motor has no choke I bet that is what that second hole is for in bottom of fuel bowl.
The screws on the reed valves I would really use some thread lock on. I have heard people say do not use it but I have used it on my personal motors and never had a screw loosen up and destroy my engine. That's a judgement call.
I always put the bolts screws etc back into the holes they came from when I take something apart especially if it is going to be apart for a while it makes putting it back together so much easier and old mechanic taught me that its been a game changer for me. Sometimes the hardware is longer/shorter etc but looks a lot the same. It has really helped me especially not to loose hardware and quicken re-assembly by not looking for that darn screw or washer etc.
One more tip that I do is when working on those type motors or the ones with the tube spool style recoil when putting a carb on and off to see if it is right I don't put the recoil back on I use just a rope to start engine. It is also helpful when checking plugs for spark because you can stand directly behind the motor and pull the rope. It also gives you more leverage starting a motor rapping it around the flywheel which is good for older folks like me especially when a motor hasn't ran correctly or isn't running correctly.
    Hope that helps

Parts prices, getting (or are already) astronomical. The outboard motor "hobby" will soon be a Rich mans Only hobby. Same thing that happened to the old car hobby years ago. Now just Rich boy's toys.
The free market is now the Greed market.
Like someone in the outboard hobby said recently, "it's suppose to be a hobby, Not a retirement fund".
