I tend to buy Charon's contract and then I like to use my imagination and pretend that he and the Lone Wanderer develop a friendship similar to that of Hebert Dashwood and Argyle.
Christian Johnson i use my imagination and thinks he is the vault dweller and his personality changed due to all that happened to him, so the lw opens him up and tries to return him back to the hero he once was

To be honest, the kindest thing you could do is keep Charon. If he’s that brainwashed, telling him “you’re free to do what you want” won’t fix everything. It’ll simply cause him to be unsure how to live his life, possibly wander for a time, and likely end up under someone else’s control. That’s what he was brainwashed to do.
As long as you’re keeping him with you, treating him with kindness, there’s a chance you could get through to him in time... heck, if you can find some nice ghoul to help him out (so there’s no time limit on their life, like the lone wanderer) maybe over time, you could help him... I’d like to think so.
Charon is one of my favorite companions even though he doesn't say much. I wish there was more of a story behind his character

I’m amazed that after thirteen years of playing his game I’ve never once tried turning off Ahzrukhal’s radio while he was alive.
What I think would work best for Charon would be to give him the contract; by his (albeit brainwashed) logic, with the contract in his possession, he is his own master, and thus can do as he pleases.
Daedra Sheogorath From what people have theorized, it's more complicated than that. If the contract were to be given to him, he'd go and find another person to give the contract to. I don't think it's as simple as that.
What if contract burns ?
That is a very interesting peice of logic but what if he refuses to do so? The people who brainwashed him surely wouldve been smarter than to do that, make it to where he could take his own contract and become his own master what I did with charon was I paid for his contract and wacthed as he killed his previous master, I do not see him as a tool but as a brother in arms

I have had a soft spot for the ghouls of Underworld since the first time I played Fallout 3 a lifetime ago.

@32:00 - destroying the contract before deprogramming Charon would result in disaster, like "freeing" a domesticated animal into the wilderness. They are not equipped, they would be doomed. If our character is of good karma, then likely we are a far better employer than Charon could typically hope for - everyone else would either be evil or not capable of protecting themselves, making work harder for Charon, or more likely to result in the same kind of disaster when their employer gets killed.
I think holding his contract, at least until a way of deprogramming him is found, is the best possible result, all around. It's doing him a great favor compared to the other possibilities.
Since he’s a ghoul, I’d worry that he would go feral after such a drastic change to his mental state. He’d be a reaver for sure.
Anyone else feel the fallout 4 ghoul models dont look as scarred from radiation like the ones from 3 or new vegas?
From what I remember they look like walking potato sacks from a kids cartoon.

I would love to see Gob's story in Fallout 3! He's my fav character in a Fallout game, and I was so surprised when he was mentioned by Carol here!

Charon is my absolute favorite companion in any Fallout game *because* of his lack of background information! I can picture my character sitting across a campfire from him at night and making a guessing game on Charon's history while he just rolls his eyes and keeps watch. It's super fun for me to have that kind of freedom with a companion. The only run I've made of the game where heading to Underworld for Charon was not the first thing I did out of the Vault was the first run. Simply because I didn't know he was there! And, unfortunately, Greta usually dies for the cause because of that as I usually have nowhere near enough caps to buy the contract. Don't worry Greta! It's for a good cause!

@@etinarcadiaego7424 I could, but why? Greta doesn't serve any necessary purpose in the game and if you talk to Carol she has interesting new dialogue with Greta dead compared to if she lives. And Greta's jealous of the mother/son relationship Carol has with Gob. I like to headcanon that, if left alone, Greta would do her best to tear Carol and Gob apart. So getting rid of her is actually a good thing in the long run.
I think Charon was some sort of slave before he was a Ghoul. He was probably well fed and treated, to keep him strong and healthy. He grew up being brainwashed on how to act and be, maybe he suffered some sort of transportation that made it easier to do. I don't know. I'm spitballing here. I think it was just to make him more interesting, since he doesn't talk much.

Charon is my second favorite companion in Fallout 3 (after Dogmeat of course). I always kit him out in Hellfire armor as soon as possible. With the armor's design combined with Charon height, its make a very intimidating presence. It also just feels right that the guy from the 𝘕𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘭𝘦 in the 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 is in 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦 armor.
I actually gave Charon his contract from my inventory. It doesn't do anything, but I like think after Broken Steel, he found that he had it and wandered trying to discover himself
did you use a mod to do that? Because in vanilla fallout, it's a quest item & can't be removed from your inventory.
Charon was one of the only followers I got to have with me when I played a while back, and I remember when he killed Alzrukhal I freaked tf out man, It took me by surprize since Fo3 didn't have too many cut scenes this was close enough. I just thought it was cool as hell :))

i don't know what it was about Charon but I loved him so much. He was my favorite companion and i gave him Lincoln's hat. I was absolutely too lazy/stingy to collect and give 2000 caps for him though so i killed Greta. I guess I'm a terrible person, but i loved that boy like my son.

Next to Fawkes, Charon was the best follower. Annilated anything he touched, wasnt annoying and was taller than everything.
Edit, April 4th 2020: fixed Fawkes' name (idk why I spelt it Faux). Also adding Jericho to the list as he can utilize big guns, especially the heavy incinerator, and thrown explosives with decent precision. I'm knocking Charon down a peg as the last time I used him, he vanished from my game. Took the Lincoln repeater, Power armor (cannot recall which type) and a slew of other weapons and ammo I was going sell.
He got blown up 10 minutes after i bought his contract in my playthrough XD
I loved Fawkes. But he can’t wear armor, so Charon is number 1
Dude Fawkes doesn't need armor he'll get into a fight with 3 deathclaws and only lose less than a fourth of his health
But you can’t really customize.
@@FecalMatador I tested the Experimental MIRV on Fawkes at point blank. Dogmeat died. I died. Fawkes scratched his chest indifferently. So yeah, he doesn't need armor.
I feel like there should be a quest specifically around Sharon, like after a while of traveling with him you get the option to ask where the people who brainwashed him are, he would likely know what you're talking about but not want to admit it given how he acts. Perhaps they're to far away for you to find him, but you can still go on a quest to help him, possibly burn his contract, and freeing him
This guy is my absolute favorite companion. I always thought of my lone wanderer poking and prodding trying to dig under that hard shell.
He won't be Charon any of his backstory with you

I bought the contract. Tried to free him. Didn’t seem to work. Had him help me fix the Capital Wasteland. I also, did this after the whole thing at RavenRock and somehow got both Fawkes and Charon as my companions for the rest of the game lmao 😂 and yes, Dogmeat was there too. It was a sweet little game play, traveling in group like in Dragon Age 🐉 To hear them all lose their minds against a giant cockroach lmao 😂 Awesome 👏🏽
I specifically remember having a conservation with Charon about his freedom, and telling him I would free him once my task is finished. Thought the firing option freed him.
Yeah, he is kinda mentally programmed to live like a contract bound gunman.
So even if you do free him, he would still sell his contract to someone else and start doing his "job" again, probably needs caps to pay for the booze he drinks in underworld.
But that is just me making all this up.

I played this game 12 years ago and I still remember and regret killing Greta to get Charon. I remember few things from the game after all these years, but for some reason her dead body laying there every time I entered Underworld sticks with me to this day. I just didn’t have the caps to buy him when I encountered him in the game. So killing her was the only option. But it had a profound negative impact on me and I regret it to this day. What an amazing game to leave such a lasting impression.
Oxhorn, the bombs dropped in 2077 and Carol said she was born in 2051. That would make her 26 years old when the bombs dropped, and 27 when she turned. I guess she was just with her dad when it happened.
Not necessarily. If she was born any month before the end of October, she would be 25. She would only be 26 if she was born in November or December. Odds are that she was 25 when the bombs dropped--not 26.

No Oxhorn if she was born on October 23rd or before that she would be 26. She would only be 25 if she was born after October 23rd 2077.
When she said it took around a year to become a ghoul, I think it's her aged memory fading. It was likely around 30 years like what the original time it took.

Steven Velasco Ikr...there were so many moments in F04 that struck me as super depressing like that, which was kinda unexpected because FO3 had a bleaker atmosphere. The part in Carol's story about the shadows always stuck in my mind, as did the house with the robot that read "There Will Come Soft Rains." :'(

Despite the inconsistency in her birth year and the war, I'd accept Carol's aging as more canon than Billy's perpetual childhood - given that Billy's came across as more of just a joke/reference.

Charon saying goodbye to Ahzrukhal was the most badass thing I’ve saw on Fallout
I can think of two reasons why Carol looks like a grown woman, while Billy still looks like a boy:
Firstly, as a lore-based theory, it's been at least implied in multiple games that not all ghouls come out of the process the same way. They all LOOK very similar, but on the inside, they could be vastly different. Perhaps Billy's ghoulification halted his aging process, but Carol's did not.
Secondly, there's the real-world theory, which I think is more likely, which is just that the writers of Fallout 4 were morons and didn't realize that Fallout ghouls aren't actually undead. I mean, just look at the way ferals behave in that game for more evidence of this theory...

The first time I talked to Ahzrukhal, I noticed the option to buy Charon's contract but didn't think much of it. When I later got back it turns out you can also buy the contract for 1000 caps with high enough Charisma

It's funny that you say "he could possibly be killed" because my first playthrough I walked ten feet outside Underworld and he got shot to death by Super Mutants.

Carols story always makes me cry, its always stayed with me, esp when she describes the world on fire and burning and the screams outside
And this is why i wish there were companion quests. Like, imagine if after a while charon confides in you that he hates the life he was conditioned to live in, and his contract includes a clause to release him from said contract if you do this and this, and you and charon go and do those things. Then after the contract is null, depending on your karma, charon stays with you, he leaves you, or charon decides to kill you.
they really missed an opportunity here. he could have been prewar and full of lore.
and rather than simply having his contract, you could have had the option to buy it it give it to him, setting him free. i picture a sort of Aladdin and Genie moment where he is shocked someone would do that for him and then becomes a friend and follower.
Possibly could be bethesda's math is off, either in fallout four, or here. If the year was a typo, and should have been 2061, Carol would have been 15 or 16 when the bombs fell, (depending on her birthday), assuming that fallout 4's date of the bombs falling holds true over the game arc. Which would make more sense, as the way she talks about Carol seems reminiscent of someone who has the emotional attachment of a relationship, though who has not yet achieved the maturity to approach the subject as an adult.
Alternatively, another explanation, is that twenty year olds are treated like 16 year olds are treated by society today, where they're deemed unable to make legal decisions on their own, and thus it would explain several other characters' desertions from their families, such as Mags and William from the Nuka World DLC, and the majority of Raiders, as they're usually appearing to be around 20 years of age
