Much prefer the blocks in this game over the plastic minis in other hold the line games and battle cry. Great review. More of you two together please.

    Great review.
I don't have the ACW version but I do have Battles of Frederick(SYW), Jacobite rebellion, FIW and AWI versions. They are older and have counters rather than blocks although some have been reprinted with figures I believe.
I have all the Command and Colors games but I keep coming back to Hold the Line, because of the command system. I want to see how good I am at commanding the battle and not how good are the cards I am dealt.
    Once again, great review.

I recommend to look at the Horse and Musket series by Hollandspiele, made by the Designer of Hold the Line: Fredericks War and Highland Charge.

I haven’t compared the board sizes, but could you in theory play these scenarios on a Battle Cry game board with the nicer plastic pieces (if you could somehow also track morale colors)?
How long did it take the sticker the beast? That’s always a negative for these games in my book - though not only be that would keep me from buying them.
And while I’m writing, I HATE the random card sections for the C&C series. I own Ancients, Napoleonics, Battle Cry, and enough Memoir 44 to play my full D-Day Landings expansion, but I have a really hard time getting any of it out due to the way the cards work. I really just want the same exact games but with action points mechanics I can spend anywhere. The last game of Napoleonics I played was a train wreck because I essentially never had more than one card I could use to activate my units during the first three turns. That really makes you want to leave the game on the shelf.

"Nicer plastic pieces"? I really prefer wooden blocks, myself. I guess in theory you could play that way if you wanted to.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I should clarify - I’m a bit of a mini war gamer and so I painted up my minis. I’d hate to leave them sitting in the box if I can pull em out and play them in a better game system.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Slightly off topic, but would you dig a Civil War block game that used more elongated rectangular blocks that moved using something like the X-Wing flight path system? I’ve been toying with the idea of hidden movement selection like that, followed by movement and combat resolution. To me it would be an ideal way to play some Civil War without needing hexes or an elaborate miniature setup.
