It's actually ridiculous how much this exceeded my expectations, I understand now why they didn't have a major update in cs since 2021

Also there were rumors for a long time that Mirage and Overpass might be getting a remake or visual overhaul and that too comes with CS2

After almost 15 years since Left 4 Dead, we can finally see our legs again. This is definitely the reason for game's name change from CS:GO to CS2.

There is a fan made TF2 source 2 in development. Valve doesn't mind so it means probably no official one is being made.

Not happening. They moved cs to s2 specifically so they didnt have to work in source 1. Tf2 is a source 1 project, therefore most of valve hates working on it

The name almost implies that CS:GO this whole time has just been a really advanced version of CS 1.6, along with every other game in the franchise. I am very confused by the choice.

I never quite got "Global Offensive" but hey, it started life as a XB360/PS3 source port. And Valve on consoles is always weird.
But now a CS 2 and there ain't really nothing new? I mean thank you for the lightning system that will put CSGO up to 2015 graphics standards but... What else? What makes it a 2?

I like how the energy in Tyler’s voice has risen up to its original, exciting and enthusiastic levels. We really were on a Valve drought weren’t we?
"Tickless" = a number between 0 and 1 to be applied for lag compensation purposes of hitscan tracing. Basically 0=position in previous tick, 1=position after this tick and the subtick number allows for fine grained position interpolation. Probably not going to do much for 99% of players, but at least they shut up about the tick thingy now. ^^

I'll be honest, I wasn't really paying attention to the Counter Strike Source 2 port news, because I thought it was just going to be an update to CS:GO, but now that this is officially gonna be Counter Strike 2, I'm kinda interested now. I don't think Valve would be dropping "2" at the end of a title without it being more than just an update.
I haven't heard Tyler be this enthusiastic in years. It's honestly really nice.

I think Touchstone maps is just maps pushed straight from Source to Source 2, so no new materials/textures/models. Just the standard suite of Source 2 engine improvements.
Refurbished maps have new models and textures but are not a complete remake. Think de_train from source to GO.
And ofc new maps are new maps.

happy for CS players, but cant help but feel the need for a new half-life game

With new smoke mechanics
Shotguns might be more useful since you can use em to remove enemy smoke when up close
the smoke tech is totally something they have cooking even better and more advanced for half life 3, ive been theorizing the next step in tech for half life for years that this type of "particles" would be the new mechanical, graphical thing for games.

One thing I noticed with the skins preview is that if you go frame by frame, you'll see that some skins actually use a different weapon model. Looks like the old models will be there (Maybe with more polys, maybe as is?) for skins that haven't been adjusted into the newer UVs of the new meshes, helping with the transfer from CS:GO Source 1.
I know jack-all about what goes into making video games work, but even I know that the way the smoke grenades are working in this game now is freaking IMPRESSIVE. Looking forward to hearing more about the game and Source 2 as a whole
I really hope there is an animation trailer for Counter-Strike 2, made with source Filmmaker 2 when it will be release.

It exists. It's never likely going to be public. There was video of Rubikon being demoed here on youtube by the lead dev discussing physics data serialization for real time debugging.
Edit: GDC 2014 Physics for Game Programmers: Debugging Physics presented by Sergiy Migdalskiy. Not finding the video but the slides are not hard to find. The top heavy lamp on Page 50 I definitely remember being from L4D in the talk itself.
Further Edit: The GDC 2014 video is on the internet archive with the title GDC2014Migdalskiy. L4D can be seen around the 26 minute mark.

@@LoneWanderer905 I’m not, but L4D3 is always welcome. If L4D2 Source 2 was made, I would want it to be a separate release.
The updated weapon models is something i have seriously wanted for ages (csgo has absolutely god awful quality gun models) but honestly didnt think we would get it because the need for skin parody and the fact that we are getting it and our skins will still transfer over is amazing.
You are right in a way Tyler, this doesn't seem like much of a new game, just the old one remade with some extra bits (very cool and exciting extra bits) and a new title slapped on. It's still very much CS:GO in my eyes

It would be awesome if Valve gives early access for CS2 for those who bought the game before it went free 2 play but that's just me because I haven't had much time to play Matchmaking because of work.

I wouldn't be surprised if the audio-only index is just a good alternative to headphones for devs keep around for while they're working. They sound super good, but in some environments you still want to be able to hear what's going on around you. They're like the ultimate open-back headphones; they're open front. Them being around in the office doesn't necessarily mean that Valve is going to manufacture them at scale though.

Hopefully there'll be an easier way to port over Source 1 maps to the new engine, it was a lot more tedious with Alyx but hopefully they have a toolset to make everything easier

Valve will want it to be Steam Deck verified, plus will not want to lose CS: GO's user base with the upgrade, so I can't imagine it will be much more taxing than that.

Both already been confirmed by Valve that they have been canceled, *years* ago, by looking into Half-Life Alyx: The Final Hours. Sorry to be that guy, but someone has to say it.
@@skaynne54 yeah because a continuation of half life was never cancelled and then brought back (hint half life 3 was in development atleast 3 seperate times and it was cancelled each time and it still came back)
@@skaynne54 also when tyler ran a story on l4d3 initially valve completely denied they even worked on it, i wouldn't really trust much of what they say in the final hours
As someone who has zero interest in counter strike, I am still impressed by all the features they're pouring into this game. Valve always surprises and brings us new shiny content, and for that reason I am invested in knowing more (up to a point tho). The voxel based smoke was an insanely cool way to announce CS2 I will admit.
It is essentially CS:GO Remastered. That's what it is.

@@dud5606 they said in the map video there was gameplay changes, along with the volumetric smoke in itself being a mechanic seeing that the frag grenade "blows it" away and bullets ripping holes in it.
Make the music a bit quieter in the future please, it's too distracting and takes up a much wider frequency range than your voice. Good vid!

Source 2 has been usable for game development for years, valve has proven that. Don't think for a minute that valve not releasing games is because source 2 wasn't ready.

My impression was that one of the major roadblocks slowing Valve down was that Source 2 was not fully complete. While Alyx was developed on and runs Source 2 the way I understood it is that that version of Source 2 was half-baked and not fully feature complete. Essentially the Source 2 that runs Half-life Alyx only includes the bits that is needed for that game to run but is missing other vital stuff (like online components).
With the release of Counter-Strike 2 I hope Source 2 is deemed as feature complete and that no major feature is missing. That the engine is so complete that they can release it to modders who can make complete full games.
I might be wrong but that isn't the state Source 2 is at the moment.

source 2 is very, VERY well optimized compared to the mess of code that is source 1. i wouldn't be surprised if the game ran better tbh

Seeing all of this is planting false hope in me that it's possible to get "Team Fortess 3." As in a TF2 Source 2 port with an inventory transfer.

Well, given that the Dota 2 Reborn Update came in 2015, and this year 2023 we're getting CS2 for CS:GO, I guess we'll have to wait another 8 years for it to be TF2's turn to get the "Sauce 2 rebake" treatment.

If tf2 made even a quarter of the money counterstrike did this would be probably on the cards but it doesn't.
Tf2 has a lot more unique models and effects though so it would probably be much more difficult.

I believe Touchstone maps are those, that already started out as Source 2 maps but were backported to Source 1. Back when the Dust 2 remake came out, there were several hints this was the case.
And regarding the Sub-Tick system: Their visual looks a lot like how Rollback Netcode works for fighting games, so I'm assuming they are receiving input packets with timestamps now and can calculate game state based on that to decide which player "won" an action between ticks.

well if Counter-Strike 2 is the sequel to Counter-Strike, then I guess Condition Zero and CSGO are kinda its bridges. maybe we can get another campaign levels like in Deleted Scenes? who knows
It would be cool to get something like that again. Plus they could even spice it up with like PVPvE and have like a wingman 2 v 2 with AI and objectives or whatever amount of players.
Highly doubt so. Valve has always been more focused on the esport - competitive aspect of the game than in creating any single player content.

Really glad Valve is back into game development (atleast for now). I am very exciting to see what the future holds, my dreams of a HL3 and a TF3 will never die, please Valve, and thank you.
I don't think that they were ever out of the picture when it comes to developing stuff. Steam link, Valve Index, Steam deck. From what I heard it was utter chaos for a while when it comes to games. Starting a project, getting ideas, developing it for a bit, dropping it, repeat. That's until HL: Alyx. I too have a dream of HL3 and I think we'll hear news in the next 4 years! So don't lose hope.

@Skaynne yes, you are right. But that doesn't mean that they can't start developing it at any given time. It means that they have tried working on it, failed, and canceled the project for now (which could mean between months and decades before they start working again).

when cs2 is released this summer, it will be a free upgrade for csgo. so csgo is pretty much being replaced by cs2

Alyx team was on the CS the entire time, if they had a team work on a L4D3 lore, it will take at least a year to develop the entire story line from today.
Which will not be the case because the entire Alyx/CS2 team will continue polishing the CS

interesting. the smoke system reminds me of a nebula mod i made for the old star trek armada game. the original game had nebulas on maps that were just made up of a set of fixed sprites. i turned them into a bunch of different ai driven variants. so there was an actual sentient nebula that based on where it was hit the model changed to remove sprites from where exactly it was hit.
Couldnt ever get it like this though where it reveals sections based on hit paths through the nebula. the game code that was moddable just didnt allow for that level of changes. but its interesting to see my 20 ish year old idea become reality :P
just hope the maps will work with s2fm

@@Deezsirrer I mean for example csgo maps on themselves didn't work in sfm because it's a different build of source, so it could be a possibility for source 2 as well (unless csgo comes with it's own version of s2fm of course)
