agree with your golden rule. a good mastering engineer points out mix issues and works with the client. so there is no "ready for mastering" there is only a good mastering engineer or not
Having a second shot at a mix for mastering is a real value-ad for independent artists. Hearing examples of four related mixes with discussion would make for a great podcast.
I've been seeing so many ads on VSX headphones but I know it's not going to solve everything because I know I need to know more about what I'm actually doing. Not that I haven't been getting better after the past 4 years. It's coming much closer though. Thanks for this video.
I have certainly heard that before. Except in the videos where I’m not wearing my glasses and people tell me I look like Superman. Maybe in videos with my glasses on, I should part my hair on the other side.
Short answer is for a final QC (and potentially sweetening) in a room and monitoring environment that is better than yours, by someone who specializes in QCing final mixes from the macro perspective. Also: Balancing your mixes against one another, making sure your mixes translate as expected/intended, and potentially, mix coaching. ⚠ if i'm satisfied with my mix in every way, what would be the main argument to still have it mastered?
