Every time he pauses, hes asking you to groom him as well. You cant have him do all the work because then itll feel like hes just inferior and not worthy of grooming. These are still very wild animals with natural instinct. He may refuse to have you groom him, or quickly change his mind and groom you once again, but giving him that option really makes a difference. (Also, rewarding grooming with treats is a good way to confirm good behavior)

They do it to communicate, I forget what they're signaling but yeah
Its a form of communication and them concentrating. The more the lip smacking the more concentrated they are in what they’re doing
It’s how they focus / concentrate on what they are doing. The way humans might stick their tongue out when focused.
