  • A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair provides astonishing evidence of a populace a million years more advanced than Earthlings. There are many wonders on Altair-4, but none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen portrays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied Altair-4 world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis), the remarkable Robby.... and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

This movie was standard fare on Saturday afternoon TV. Unfortunately, I was too young at the time to appreciate the comely Miss Francis!

Russ G I thought Anne Francis was hotter than the Playboy girls in the mags we hid under our beds & in tree houses back in the sixties! Still do, but I have no need to hide the Playboys anymore!!!
      Tell me, why wasn't Dr
Morbius' ID going after Anne? OK, sure she's his daughter...but HEY!, you know?
This was before Mariette Hartley[Star Trek & MANY others], Diana Riggs[The Avengers] and Jenny Agutter[Logan's Run]... and I say she bows down in second place to nobody!

I still watch it regularly. My favorite scene is when the cook gets in trouble for being drunk and he blames Robbie the robot.

I first saw it as a seven year old from the back seat of our Plymouth wagon at the Unadilla drive-in . Of course many of it's ideas were beyond me but it made a lasting impression and I have seen it literally a hundred times or more since that summer in 1956.

He did The Swamp Fox later. "Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox hiding in the glen" etc. As a kid in this time I would sing that tune.

One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. The effects were very well done, and even without the CGI computers of today, the overall visuals really pulled you in, and kept the immersion going.
The plot was pretty well done, also. Far better than so many of today's flicks. Kudos to the staff, teams, and actors. A real, timeless classic.

There's a few sci-fi movies that are classics and will always remain classics, but I'd love to see them remade with modern effects, updated storylines, etc.

I think it was the music along with the monster that scared the crap out of me when I saw it the first time.

It has never occurred to me before to notice that there is red lighting during the attack of the Id monster, because of course there is.

The ID monster sizes are due to huge intelligence of anyone. Various sizes depending. No wonder there wasn’t any ruins existed. Only below ground still exist.
