No one can touch Etta, but she did a damn good job. It's too bad her voice isn't featured more like this on her albums. She's got some pipes, but you wouldn't know it behind all the backing vocals and effects.

Totally agree. It takes a great song like this one to show how super-talented she is! I came here from watching her on SNL doing some of her own hits -- I was trying to figure out why she's so popular. Sure, she's very pretty, hits the notes, can dance the routines, but it's empty, soulless music...it's boring and you can't tell if anyone's home inside the pop tart/vamp exterior. But then I listened to this -- WOW. She can REALLY interpret a song. This is singing with mind, heart, and soul.
Every song you listen to doesn't have to have deep meaning for it to sound good 😅
I wouldn't say today's music has no heart or emotion because there are definitely modern songs with deeper meanings and lyricism. You just have to find it. BUT I do agree that a lot of today's music is heartless and emotionless (not all), especially mainstream pop since its just done to make money.

You described it perfectly, she really has the tone of voice to sing soul, r&b, blues. But I think she still has a lot to show in her retro pop/electro style. Maybe she will offer some songs a little more prepared to be sung acoustically. She showed her dancing (ok she got it with work), now she will be able to show her voice which seems to be an innate talent.
