Epic second day over Rügen and more epic low save at 11:38. You're on the edge of your seat and then have to grin when the thermal comes up. I celebrate your trip so much!
“Nice” is right. Couldn’t have said it better myself. What a great summer you’ve had. And now we’ve been able to have it too… thanks to your videos. Danke.
I love your adventures! But, please Stephan, when you do a winchstart put your left hand AL ALONG THE WINCH on the yellow release. A cartwheel and a Low cable break is so DANGEROUS. Greetings from Belgium. André- gliderpilot
For me, the early pulling on the stick scared me a bit. Just too steep for that part of the winch launch. No critisicm, just contributing to a discussion on safety
What a great journey, thanks for sharing these moments! You crazy young guys being a little lucky getting a saving thermal above the Baltic Sea. Looking forward to the next episode…
Magnificent Stefan! Absolutely magnificent. I cannot WAIT to do travel by glider with the DG505MB once the engine is reinstalled. It's definitely on my bucket list for this year!
Hab gerade deinen Kanal entdeckt. Fantastisch.
Do you need to / can you contact the local/regional air traffic control tower when you enter their airspace? Do you have to let them know about your presence (can they see you on radar?), route etc.? Or is your flight pretty much free to do whatever you want?
In Germany you can fly without contacting ATC, with the exception of some special zones. They can see you when you have a transponder, and sometimes also on radar, but that is not for sure. So flight is pretty much free to do what you want, with the main exceptions of zones near the main airports.
So inspiring!!! Going for my first introduction flight in a sailplane this weekend. Hopefully on the verge of a new hobby. Keep up those adventures coming. 🙏
I have learned to not do that because of the acceleration, so you could release by mistake. When you have your hand on your leg you are still fast enough and you don't have the risk to release by mistake...
@@felixwitzenbichler2407 That is true but I'd prefer that to happen (on the ground) than fumble for the release while the glider departs into a potential cart-wheel. There was a really bad couple of accidents at my old club and at my new one when in both instances the gliders flipped over on their backs with rather obvious consequences.
@@aeromael4707 My glider has flaps too. You have them set for the ground run and the initial part of the launch. Once in the full climb then you can take your hand off the release. For an aerotow the ground run is longer and there is time to set the flaps from negative to positive once you have aileron authority on the ground - hand on release otherwise.
Saludos!
Stefan- Can you describe what kind of Lyft are you experienced when flying over the Baltic Sea? You address it a little bit in your narrative. Who are the thermals under the clouds strong or weak compared to that over the land masses? Are these thermal generated Cumulus or some type of Convergence involving cold and warm fronts? I would think that oceans that are relatively warm like the Gulf of Mexico would produce stronger thermals compared to that over the relatively cold Baltic Sea.
This trip is amazing, I was in that part of Germany and booked a plane from Hangar 10 in Zirchow, we flew a few hours and was unbelievable, also the museum from there was great
I tried to spiral my LS3 A with the zero degree flap setting . It works fine for me, I can spiral at 80km/h and 35 degrees of bank and I have less drag than with the 5° setting . I studied the Dick Johnson polars . It's a revelation after 30 years of flying the LS3 , LOL.
small float on the sea and line up to non powered glider sail plane that moves up like a kite and backwards cos float moves but has some adjustable resistance too from the water...could work,.
Hi Stefan!
That video was absolutely amazing! Those views man!!! I'm new to the channel and to this world of gliders. I do have a question to anyone, I'm a big guy, 2 mts tall big frame and 120 kg... is my size a limitation for doing this? (cabin size, weight, etc).
Between you and Bruno Vassel, I think this is my next adventure after hang gliding. I had to lose 10 Lbs. at least to do it. I've lost 20Lbs. So I think I'm ready. What is that red handle for? Is that a secondary release?
I'm very interested in gliding, but can you give me any insight you have into this aspect. Repair and maintenance costs. In the past 3 to 5 years how much have you or people you know, had to spend on repairs and maintenance etc to stay airworthy. I ask because a woman said she had to spend $8k to have cracks around her airbrake boxes repaired and that's a lot to me.
This heavily depends on the condition of the glider. Big checks e.g. at 3000h can cost from 3000 - 10000€ if you don't do it on your own and if they find a lot to repair. Other than this is ok from the price. At the LS3 I only made enhancements up to now, no big repair or so...
@@SteFly Yea' I wasn't sure if I would be able to do my own repairs. If they are only minor, it only fiberglass etc, it's got to be done right and professional, but it's not welding titanium... I'm in Australia and it might be different. Thanks for the reply.
@@juhakettunen7971 For me it would cost the course, license, a trip to europe and everything that comes with it. Anyway I'm ok flying hang gliders in brazil! Many of those costs are the same for a HG trip to the alps anyways, and it's out of reach right now...

WOW!
Bei 11:37 hab ich ein bisschen Gänsehaut bekommen. Aber was für ein genialer Flug! Fantastisch!

Definitly, well spoken. Start is where deadly glider accidents DO happen. Especially on experienced glider pilots.
For me, the early pulling on the stick scared me a bit. Just too steep for that part of the winch launch. No critisicm, just contributing to a discussion on safety
Yo where do you fly exactly :)
Ich weiß, warum ich neidisch bin 😂Wunderbares Video, Stefan!
I love this kind of adventure- gliding. Thanks for sharing, Stefan. 👍
What a joy to have such a nice trip and even better to share it with a friend. 😀

Please keep your hand on the release during the ground run on a winch launch. You need to react quickly if you get a wing drop.
