- Clip starts with a typically hilarious cold open followed by a great skit in which Carl Reiner spoofs European commercials. Innocently done ethnic humor such as this seems to have disappeared thanks to the P.C. parade. Carl Reiner's timing is unbelievable and one wonders if certain jokes that appear to be ad-libbed may have been completely scripted.
That is the Kitty Malone in the part of the model. She was also in The Music Man and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
the italian ad was cut...had a moment where CR gave the girl some gum for her breath. she chewed it briefly, gave to CR and Reiner gave it to Paulson, who put it in his pocket!
utterly hilarious! Rob Reiner is one of the few people who invented tv comedy.
He wasn't employing "racial humor". I'm perpetually amazed at the misuse and abuse of the terms "racism" and "racist" these days. The word has been so trivialized as to strip it of any true force. It's gotten so ridiculous that today, if one criticizes religious or political points of view, someone can be counted on to hurl the "racist" label.
Reiner was having fun with cultural contrasts here, he wasn't mocking anyone's race.
Hail to the Tommy and Dick; and hell to CBS for cancelling them.
Carl Reiner had a LOT of experience as a writer/performer was able to think on his feet (and ad-lib when he had to) when working with Sid Caesar on "YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS" and "CAESAR'S HOUR" in the '50s. This 1967 excerpt is no exception...

Carl Reiner -- among other things, the writer of classic shows such as Your Show of Shows and The Dick Van Dyke Show the interviewer to Mel Brooks' 2,000 Year-Old Man. Carl Reiner is also the father of Rob Reiner.
I do think he is speaking his faux German with a British accent. (Not that I could do better.)

Either Carl learned a lot from Sid or Sid from Carl . . . regardless, they are masters of their craft. Fascinating how they based their work in vaudeville but came up with something uniquely their own.
