Greenwood built the railway as a hobby, and was certainly operative into the ‘60’s. Used steam engines. The Abbey, by the way, was desecrated by Telford demolishing part of it and driving what was the A5 road through the grounds. The monument by the old Abbey station was in part of the Abbey grounds, until severed by the new road construction.

the abbey church was damaged by telford. the abbey suffered at the hands of HENRY 8TH and the persons who bought the stone etc.

The reason the Abbey has that huge chunk missing on the South side is because Thomas Telford wanted to build the road there, so it was demolished. The original road into town ran behind the Abbey, it is still there today.

Hobson Greenwood Haulage company were based there up to the 70s I think so it was a distribution point, the miniature tracks were most likeley used for trolleying pallets of sugar around the yard after they had been brought down from Liverpool. Lorries used to reverse through the arch to be loaded and unloaded.

Hi Henry, great channel you have here. Shrewsbury Abbey looks so impressive and ancient. Apparently there are a peal of bells hung for chiming as the tower has structural issues. Would be nice to rehang them for change raining again. Do you know why the miniature railway was cut off and discontinued?

Hi Martin, thank you for joining me and glad you like my channel. Interesting info on the abbey there, thank you. To answer you question, no. There's very little known about the railway. I spoke to a gentlemen about 7 years ago and he told me they used to move goods around that yard but that's all he would tell me.

When I first came across this railway in the early 2000’s the track ran under the arch to pavement

I have heard the same, I believe my granddad was once invited there for a look as he also had a 7 1/4 gauge railway on the outskirts of Shrewsbury
