I finally got to visit Alcatraz in August of 2022, there bullshit tour of the rock was nothing compared to this great presentation. My thumbnail is proof of my visit standing down at the dock that says Alcatraz Island, that's me. I once visited San Francisco in 1990 but did not get a chance to physically visit the rock. I only saw it from pier 39, right there where the barking seals are

Visiting in the 80’s was completely different. Actual Rangers lead tours, former inmates would visit and talks, and author’s would have book signings. Was just there in April 2024 and it was horrible. Audio players made it hard to tell exactly where you were on the tour. Sad part is, very little of the prison is open to the public unlike in past years.
I live in north Carolina and it's not real close to San Francisco. I am 60 and had I lived someplace like AZ, NM, NV, or UT. I would have gotten to it sooner bit along the way, you raise kids, get married and divorced and it eats up time and takes away from your bucket list. I had a job once that required me to travel and got out to California back in the 90s but it was always Los Angeles and I would not have been permitted to drive to s.f. nor did I have transportation to do so.

Prisons today far worse than this. Open front call. Large dining area, large yard and workshops
