How to Install a Range Hood & Make-up Air Damper to Run Simultaneously in a Tiny House

  • In the small space of a tiny house, it is important to have the best ventilation (especially when cooking). When installing the range hood that vents to the outside, I needed a way to let fresh air in when it was running and sealed when it was off. Otherwise, it would pull too much air out of the tiny house and create a negative pressure vacuum effect. After several calls to the manufacturers and research, this is how I wired my range hood to my make-up air damper. This allows the damper to automatically open when I turn on the range hood and automatically close when the range hood is turned off.
    Air damper that I used: Field Controls FAD-6 Fresh Air Damper, 6"

    Range Hood that I used: Broan-NuTone BCSD124SS BCSD, 24-Inch, Stainless Steel www.amazon.com...
    Transformers that I used: Thermostat / Doorbell Transformer, 24V 40VA Power Supply

    What are you doing? Power of One Transformer and put an air switch in the ductwork that will notice pressure

    Good solution for the make up air. I think some of the newer models use a pressure switch, so no double pole toggle switch needed.

    Would love to know how the wiring works. I have a 4 speed fan and want to know how to do it for my damper like that. Thank you.

    Broan makes a makeup air kit that utilizes a pressure switch to close a relay and opens the damper when the kitchen hood ventilation is utilized...operates on 24V

      I have a question, related to my new installation...in this situation, where is the power for the makeup air damper coming from? Does it come off the hood, or does the makeup air damper have its own power? I'm getting confliction information.

    Just ordered a 1200 CFM. Cancelled it after this video and bought a 400CFm instead lol.
    WA state allows 400CFm without make up air. Too lazy to deal with the make up air process.
    Thanks for the video!!

      How is the 400cfm working for you? Does it remove all the cooking smell, oils, steam, etc? I'm in the same boat, trying to figure out if I'll need a makeup air or not. Wife is asian, and her stove cooking is very frequent.

      I think 900 CFM is the maximum exhaust without make-up air.

    Dan, So grateful for your helpfulness in this video on the MUA. I am a homeowner that is having a complete new kitchen installed into an old house complete renovation.
    I was sold a very complicated range exhaust solution that two different contractors are having extreme difficulty.
    I was told I had to purchase a remote blower solution with a separate MUA. The contractor could not even install the damper for the range hood.
    Have you experience with integrating these items PKEX22 insert with external blower EB15 and the Braun MUA MD10TU units?

    Great video - thanks for the explanation. Is there any way for me to get a schematic of your wiring? I would like to do the same thing.

    Hi Dan
    Thank you so much for this video ; i have one hood Zline, 4 speeds and have the same scenario, my custmer wants two dampers, one in the hood duck itself and the other in the A/C duck outdoor,
    I am an electrician I understand the wiring but the challenge is how to connect to the 4 speed switch the transformers. I did call manufacturers and they do not have any information how to connect it and they are afraid we can avoid the warranty . Can you share the wiring diagram?
    thank you again

    Great job! I’ll be waiting for your future video on how it’s going to look once completed. Also, is the makeup air conditioned ?

      Thanks so much! Its a lot of fun. The make up air for the hood vent is not conditioned. My logic was that most of the air coming in would theoretically be pulled up around the range and then back out through the hood. I know some moisture and temperature difference would stay in the living space once the hood was off, but didn't think it would be enough to justify the additional cost and time to figure out a way to condition it.

    You couldn’t have just hooked up a controller with a sensor?

    Get any critters in through the bottom damper? I don’t know if I’d trust a metal flap damper to keep out mice, etc.

      There is a hood on the exterior with a screen and you should have a filter box in this system to filter out pollen etc. I think he just has it set up this way to try and simply the explanation of how it works.

    Absolutely fantastic, thank you very much funny thing is I'm building a new home well the planning right now and this was a major concern for it is a very very tight home and make up air it's going to be essential you could not have made this at a better time thank you there are products out there but they cost three to $400 more than what this costere but they cost 3 to $400 more than what this cost

    What ERV system did you choose to go with?

  • @Cahnsarah

    Does it fullfil the make up air code required for any vent hood above 400 cfm.

    Thanks for creation this video. I'm building a home myself and doing a very similar MUA system. Is there ant way I can get the wiring schematic you used? I appreciate it!

    • @truewayhomes3897
      @truewayhomes3897  ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! One thing, if your set up allows for it, is to look into a "adjustable static pressure switch and damper set up". This would make the closed cycle make up air loop much simple to create. I did not use this option because I was afraid of interfering with the ERV system. I could send you a quick drawing of how my particular wire worked if that helps? Let me know how i could send you that.

    Does the makeup air damper have to be below the hood?

      It’s better if it is because of stack effect.

    AFAIK make up air dumper should be at least 10 feet away from the hood on the opposite wall.

    • @dfa1
      @dfa1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can it be in a different room, or even higher than the hood?

    • @Forrest-Jackson
      @Forrest-Jackson ปีที่แล้ว

      Make up air should be located wherever you need it... in this case, a highly localized intake and exhaust are exactly what's best, especially if he has multiple syncronous HRV units he doesn't want to imbalance. The requirements would differ in an unheated space with gas appliances, for example, than they would for meeting the requirements of whole house ventilation... or in this case, exhausting steam and odor from a highly specific location. Most range vents in older homes don't work very well b/c they're drawing and exhausting the conditioned air from the home itself and creating negative pressure (bad). And as soon as you introduce tight construction with HRV/ERV's then they need to be considered when introducing make up air. As far as I know, there is no Energy/Heat Recovery component for any make up air unit (which is what I actually AM looking for 🤣🤣🤣)

    • @CMCraftsman
      @CMCraftsman 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why would you want to pull all of your conditioned air from the room by putting it 10 feet away? That makes 0 sense. The damper can be anywhere but the best place I’ve found for the vent is right in the floor behind the range
