    for those in a hurry, he starts explaining the actual photorespiration at 5:16

    Sal, like an idiot, I went to other videos first. Between their potato cameras, the lack of ANY charisma, and my general disinterest, I was ready to just throw in the towel and realize I couldn't care less about plant metabolism if it were telecast on CSPAN. Then I remembered my academic blankey, KA. Thanks, KA for reviving me and sheltering me under your safe, warm wings.

    Isn't this just a way for plant to guarantee to get CO2, even when it doesn't get it from air outside. Or where does those CO2 molecyls go?

      Did you get an answer to it?? Becoz I have the same question!

      In this process Co2 is generated at the cost of RuBP not being regenerated, therefore the CO2 produced can not be fixed in the Calvin cycle.( Since the Calvin cycle requires RuBP )
      So the co2 produced really has no use which is why I highly doubt that this mechanism is a way to gaurantee co2 for photosynthesis and is more of an evolutionary fault.

    Sal khan you are the best best ..
    Your academy is best ..
    And your staff efforts and competency is worth appreciating ..
    I wished if we were also having competent staff like this in our school and colleges

    NADPH, ATP and NH3 are also uselessly wasted in photorespiration

    Looks like photorespiration only happens in significant amounts when the stomata are closed. If they are closed, then the 3 carbon dioxide atoms lost to this process don't have anywhere else to go. So they will probably be reabsorbed in the normal Calvin-Benson cycle.

    • @lolamoon7296
      @lolamoon7296 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s helpful to complete photosynthesis when the area is too hot for the stomata to open and it only has access to o2

    I noticed that Sal wrote Rubisco's name as RuBP oxygenase-carboxylase. However, I learned in one of his previous videos that Rubisco is short for RuBP carboxylase-oxygenase (hence the acronym). Pointing out that detail, great video otherwise!
