I swapped my 2nd hand Ricoh GR II and I'm very pleasantly surprised by the Fujifilm XF10. It might be a bit heavier, it's more compact - and it's the only other pocketable compact boasting an APS-C sensor. ISO performance is WAY better than that of the GR II. I had the X-70 in the past as well, the XF10 is a lot lighter (don't understand why the X-70 never really became popular though). As far as "hunting" is concerned ("AF sluggishness" as mentioned below), just stop using CF (continuous focus) if you don't really need it and choose single focus - the difference is noticeable immediately . I wondered why the reviewers didn't think of that, although I gotta admit there doesn't seem to be any logic in how the continuous focus actually works (also hunting if nothing's moving) - there a firmware update could be useful. No doubt, the Ricoh GR II is easier, faster or at least more intuitive to change settings and AF is a bit faster in general, but switching to single focus really helps on the XF10, and after you've done so the difference is negligible. Ricoh GR II lacks a touchscreen which works like a charm on the XF10 and although the GR II's 16MP sensor is a great performer, details from the XF10 with a newer 24MP sensor are much better (if you like or need that). I also love the fact the XF10 doesn't have a lens coming out (so there's not risk of sucking dust to the sensor, as on the GR-series in general). A detail to many maybe, but the XF10 uses micro-SD cable to charge, which I really prefer over what you need for the GR. In general I'm really happy and concerning the XF10 comes at a much lower price point than the GR II, let alone GR III, I think the Fujifilm really is the typical bang for your buck deal. I could go on forever sharing my enthusiasm about this little machine, I'll keep it at this for now :-)
This is my first TSCTV I have watched since Jordan and Chris left (sorry). I'm pleasantly surprised, you guys put on a good review, I'll definitely stay subscribed.
Is it quick enough to allow you to press the shutter fully or do you need to half press first? In the video it looked like the delay was because they had face detect on. Have you noticed if that is the delay they refer to? Any kind of delay would make me want to snap to 5m and then switch over to manual focus so it stays there and then have zero delay. Can that be done quickly?
Glad to hear that you like it. Fuji did a lot of things right with the camera. But, for the price point, I think it could have been fine-tuned it more.
I have it too and am very happy with it. I don’t find the autofocus slow at all so I’m puzzled why you said that... anyway, Fuji should solve any issues with a software update. Oh, I have the X-T1 and I shoot street with both
The XF10, in 2019...right now, is on Amazon for $456.. Seriously thinking about getting this cam as an introductory street cam + also my first Fuji cam ever, thoughts...
I prefer the XF10 over the GR II and yes I own both. The Fuji's images are special. They have the "it" that is hard to explain. I considered the new GR III BUT they took away the built in flash.
When ?! You wrote that comment 3months ago and the GRiii still isn't here.. Does anybody know if it's ever coming out, like REALLY coming out ?! Maybe it doesn't..
I own the camera and I do agree with you, the autofocus can be really annoying. But I still love that it has a big sensor and end of the day images come out really nice.
Dave: @tcstvdave Ev: @tcstvev V: @tcstvv When will V be back? I know that a lot of viewers think that a cute robot sidekick is just a gimmick and that the subtitles are a drag, but I think s/he makes a valuable contribution to tcstv.
Michael Torres yes. Definitely need a real successor to the short lived x70. I bought one the day it came out and still use it today. One of my favorites.
Price-point is clearly dictating performance, but I gleefully used an X-Pro1 for years with a lower resolution and no doubt far slower autofocus, and never felt the need to use AF tracking etc; I just adapted to its parameters. I like how light it is - the X70 was a lot heavier (and more expensive) than the GR, and this was much more of a factor than usual for me: it affects how easily you can keep it in a pocket without your clothes being pulled out of shape or becoming uncomfortable. Had I been choosing this time around, I probably would've gotten the XF10 rather than the GR. I disagree with Dave, I find that perhap the single most useful feature of mirrourless cameras is the ability to designate an aspect ratio for the viewfinder: you can "natively" compose according to that view. It was a decisive factor in buying the Sigma sd Quattro (21:9, 6:7, 1:1, 16:9, 4:3 & 2:3). and a major reason I switched to Fuji from Sony. Black and white shots look excellent. Already got a GR, but I am looking forward to an agile X-Processor IV XF20 with a tilt screen to match my Fuji gear in a year or two. "Square mode" confuses me, as I've been using square mode since X-Pro1 firmware 1.0... Is it just that there is a gesture-based shortcut to the 1:1 aspect ratio? Just as the X-T3 has a battery grip which allows it to either be small and portable, or comfortable and longlasting, I'd like to see a plug in tilt-screen module for miniature cameras like the XF10. I realise that a tilt-screen generally makes a camera thicker, but I think that street and candid shots are when the feature is most useful. Or if bluetooth has become truly swift and reliable enough, then some kind of tilting mount-point to add a handset or tablet/screen to.
I'm with you with all you wrote but the grip thing. After all it was meant to be a pocket phone-sized camera. I still have and love my x100. And, like you with the Xpro1, I have adapted myself to its AF quirks. Hopefully Fuji sooner than later upgrades its premium compact with an XT2-type AF, weather sealings and a higher pixel touch tilting/articulated screen.
Passion is in your self and it’s not in the camera ! And with passion you can make great photos with this camera. And for all the Ricoh guys .. sure this camera is better but it’s also 200 euro more expensive than the Fuji . Nice review
Dave meant that Fujifilm did not seem to have much passion behind making this camera. But, I agree with you that your passion has to come from within and that you absolutely can make great photos with this or any camera. We all just want better, nicer tools that help us focus on the subject rather than what the tool can/can't do properly. -Ev
Wow Fuji went backwards on this one. X-70 was almost there just need some improvements and I think it would of passed the somewhat dated GR II. Looks like I’ll be getting the Ricoh.
This review (and some others) make me wonder why did Fuji bother making this camera? Surely they could have made something better. Just look at XT3... and maybe also look at Panasonic LF1 which is years old and is not even made anymore, its a lot smaller, it's got EVF and focuses quite fast...
Yeah, I am not feeling this one at all. It's as if they just threw an extra camera out there in order to sell one or two more on their bottom line. I mean, a pretty pointless mic jack......just......why?
Did they ever fix the autofocus with firmware? I’m trying to decide the the extra money is worth it for the x70 and unless I can convince Fuji to loan me both to okay with it’s tough to judge
I bought the Fuji X70 when it came out... great look, interesting controls, nice feel, big sensor, small size, but I just sold it because the autofocus was HORRIBLE. The face detection ruined so many family shots... it found the face, said it was focusing on it, then proceeded to focus way beyond the actual subject. So I turned face-detect off, but still, the normal AF was slow, unreliable, and constantly hunted back and forth... I can't believe that with this new camera it's just as bad. And I also didn't like the 28mm lens... not wide enough to be wide, not tele enough to be tele. I just replaced it with a Canon G7X Mk II and that camera is fantastic... better in every way, with great and reliable AF, great zoom range, pretty fast lens, excellent speed (faster to start up and shut down) and fast and reliable handling and controls, and it's smaller and cheaper. Yes, the larger sensor of the X70 could be better in low light, but only marginally in my experience, especially if you shoot raw (which I do, and ended up having to do with the Fuji since I just didn't get along with the Fuji JPGs and their waxy skin tones they often produced).
IRather using my Huawei P20 Pro. Same focal length. Pretty sure it can't beat the Leica triple camera with handheld long exposure, 4k 30p and many more features. The market has proved that P&S are replaced by phones many years ago. Fuji is just wasting money making jewelries.

Comparing 16mp Apsc with 24mp Apsc sensors in cameras with identical lenses I've found the 16mp sensors always win in lower light situations, even though they are mainly several years older

5 year old Ricoh GR is still a better camera. Only 24mp and touch screen are the advance of XF10 and both are not essential for pocketable street camera. Keep trying Fujifilm.
The image quality is not a huge leap from a smartphone. It may have an APSC sensor but because the lens is very wide angle, you won’t be able to get any nice bokeh shots so you can’t make the most of the large sensor.

what kind of "bokeh shots" you need with a 28m lens ?
Harold6643 I’m saying it should have a longer focal length like a 35mm maybe so you can get bokeh
It is certainly a huge leap from my smartphone, the iPhone X, especially in low light.
Get rid of all the autofocus you confuse the camera. Make it spot and it's fine.
Now you guys are here forever.. tattoo cemented that..
Why would you get a camera tattooed upside down on your arm? Your arm hangs down 95% of the time. LOL
Silly goose, you don't approach geese like that :P
Right!?
Looks like the Panasonic tz7
I'll definitely stay subscribed, that being said.... you really need to put that phrase out to pasture....
This is my first video on TCSTV I have watched since Chris and Jordan left... You guys sound so fake and uninspiring. It doesn't look that you love photography and your enthusiasm is somewhat actory. I understand though that it may be hard to beat C/J so I am giving you another chance to convince me to stay.
After this video I got a big Tattoo on my chest of the XF10
This camera is an out and out fail. Please try again Fuji.
no, it's a great little camera
This camera is awesome and at a great price!
2:09 bad editing
No bokeh? Nuuhhhh
barely can hear you.
Goofy af
JPEG love...
The camera is temporary...The tattoo is permanent, no real need to commit to this Fuji XF10. For a few quids more, you can purchase the more efficient Xt20. Now selling for $900 USD.
SIZE.
A downgrade from fuji x70...
Thanks for reminding me to finally unsubscribe to this channel.
You sound like you need to be reminded of things.
Bad, bad review…
no disrespect, but man I miss Chris Niccolls.
Well, I have good news for you! He is still on TH-cam. But, he's just on DPReview's channel now. Go find him... ;)
