Thank you. I've been playing for years, but have terrible hearing and didn't notice until recently how much I was getting string noise. This helped a lot.
Over the years,, there have been times where i just stop playing for a while,,, when i pick back up, its very noticeable that i've lost the ability to be quiet. Very hard to relearn,, so thank you very much for this vid
applied this to bending on the high e string. i always bent with three fingers behind the bend so i unconsciously muted the notes below, but the string above the bend would ring out. thanks for the vid!
Wow, game changer! I always tried to mute strings with the tips of my first and second finger (with somehow poor results), but never just tried to lift the first finger and dedicated it completely to muting top strings.
Thank you! I use my fingers to mute a string when I release it while it's bended (otherwise it would do a "pull-off" kind of noise because of the tension), and I never know whether I'm supposed to do that or not. Knowing that palm/thumb/finger muting is a "valid" move makes me real happy.
yesss!! thanks so much man! my left index finger was lifting up slightly. that's where the noise was coming from! i have scoured lots of other videos and yours was the one that fixed me ;) subscribed!
Great video! I have never used my right hand right to mude the strings - thats a pretty good idea. But sometimes I have the feeling that I am loosing the flexibility of my right hand.
Thanks for the Lesson! I play without an Amp all the time Practicing and just got a HX Stomp and some headphones and man oh man i needed this so badly cuz my playing sounded like crap 😢
When bending the B string, or sometimes the G string, the string above actually also gets fretted and plays out like a clear note. How can i fix this? Or if bending and playing the string below with the index finger to hit the same note, how do you then mute the strings above? When the index finger has to be below?😁
I use my pick and middle finger on my picking hand to stop noise especially when using vibrato. On the inside strings I place the pick on the string above the vibrato string and my middle finger on the string below. Absolutely no noise. I have been doing it so long it is natural to me.
Thank you so much. I was really really frustrated and beginning to think about getting those string muting straps which is noy cool. It turns out i am not doing the rigjt technique. Thank you thank you
@@DarrylSyms i just wish there are people like you around me when i was a bit younger. Anyway have to go back and relearn those licks with bends that i have learned these past months 😄
Whenever I do a high E bend on like the 22nd fret, I'm always hearing the B and G string ring out now matter what I do. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Same happened to me, I found those strings vibrate even when my bending does not reach there (G is worst, most resonant) I think it has to do with bending on high E produces harmonics that resonate with the G string. If you have found solution, please share with us. Thanks
I get the first finger muting behind the bend, but I have another problem. When I do my bend, my ring finger tends to push the string below the one I am bending to the fret board, and it can make a sound similar to a "tap from nowhere" (only much quieter). You don't seem to have this problem. Some insight would be great.
Awesome video (and very timely!). Do you have any tips about how to do controlled vibrato on a bent string? Also, how would you keep bends and vibrato clean if you're using a finger other than your third to perform the bend/vibrato?
Good question. I wanted to include some of this info in this video, but I already exceeded the two minutes 😂 I’ll have to expand on this further another time because it’s really something I’d prefer to demonstrate than type
Hi Darryl, I've really enjoyed your video. I'm struggling a bit myself with string noise while learning Gilmours "Comfortably Numb". Your tips have effect but it's never completely gone. I wonder if the fretboard radius and the action of the guitar also an influence? What is the most advisable? THX.
Gear does effect the ease of controlling string noise, but I wouldn’t point my finger at it. Controlling string noise is a tough skill that can take weeks to really get a grasp of. I wouldn’t expect anyone to watch this video and master their string control, so do not worry. Come back in a few weeks and I’m sure that if you keep tackling it, you’ll have it down 😎
tie a bandana or rag over your strings boom noise gone. of course this wont work for songs that have open strings but the comfortably numb solo has none.
@@DarrylSyms Palm only work with fatty strings , Thumb trick work sometimes but not always :( maybe the way i bending/ plucking is wrong or strings are insanely low . i will practicing on index finger Thanks for you'r help Darryl

@@DarrylSyms Ah that's cool! Anyway you've improved my Sunday with this vid, after an hour-long practice my bends are finally sounding nice and clean. Thanks & have a good one dude
Omg thank you so much hitting other string when bending is such a bish
I've been playing for almost 3 years, but never was good at bending, and this just instantly made my bending so much better lol, nice video
Yay! 😄
You say vibrato in an interesting way. Great camera angles for showing the mechanics of what's going on

Holy shit! Thanks a million! I kept killing my vibrato on my high e string bends. This fixed my problem.
Thank you I've been trying to play the November rain solo but can't seem to get rid of unwanted strings noises this is a great help.
You can do it!

Great video, and nice chord progression at the end!
thank you. never tried this before

Excellent vidéo for beginner with absolute great details.
Can you explain how to use caged system.
You can take all the time you need.
Search my channel for CAGED and that should keep you busy for a while 😋
Funny enough all the things that you said I already knew but somehow I always forget to do. Great teaching method and video. Subscribed

if you have 'never' used your right hand to mute the strings, you have been taught wrong.
Wow! Incredible useful! Best tutorial for bending and vibrato
His teaching is clear and objective. I've seen several videos about this, but most of the explanation was not very clear. Thanks.

But I could be wrong

Thanks for the video. Is it normal when muting the upper strings with the index finger to hear the sound of the muted string rub against the frets ?
To an extent yes. If it sounds good to you then that's what matters :)
I get the first finger muting behind the bend, but I have another problem. Hi. I just canot mute with my indexfinger. I need it to support the bend. Is there other technique?
Hi, my strings tangle when I bend. Do you know what should I adjust in the guitar to prevent that? Thank you.
Yes same problem here
Frukstup discovered that you have adjust the strings height.
It’s not just height. I’ve done a video on this. Search my channel for “Bending tips” 👍
Thank you Darryl
What about bending with the index finger? How do you eliminate string nosie then?
Rarely have I seen anyone bend with their index finger. Vibrato, yes, and in which case you would use the same principles 👍
Thank you for your videos. Which kind of string ( in terms of quality) should we purchase for an easy bending ( electric guitar)? Thanks from France.
9's 😎 I rate Daddario EXL120's
What if you get a scraping sound from the string bending over the frets my fender bends smooth as silk but my used Suhr makes a scraping sound?
I had that and it’s just when you have old nasty strings, change em and it should be better, if not I’d clean the frets
Yes mate! Chord progression of the week, sounds lovely.
Thanks man! 🙌

how am i supposed to bend strings with all my fingers touching when i have tiny hands and a big ass 24-frets jackson

the best advice here is muting with the thumb while bending
my problem is when i bending High E . the middle string (G) always ringing out
Lift your index finger higher, or, even better, use the palm of your picking hand, or the thumb of your picking hand

And the final thing raise your action a little all those muting techniques will be so much easier.
yey 10k 😁😁😁
Yayyyyyyyyyyy! 👏🙌🎉😄
My e string broke :(
Yk what sucks, the fact that this doesn't help when you have to pluck off right after bending 😭 I can never do both man
"ohhhhhhhhh" from me
Sometimes when I bend, I end up literally grabbing the next 2 strings and bringing them back down with me.
That’s something a lot of beginners struggle with - but is an easy fix if you follow my instructions 🙂
@@DarrylSyms Yes I’ve fixed it with lots of practice. Thank you so much for the help!
Is it also possible you just have a loud guitar?
Nope, that’s a terrible excuse 😋 Unless you have a hollow body or something, next some for of noise is inevitable, but can still be controlled
@@DarrylSyms I feel like a compressor helps a lot when I play. I usually play without any compression. Is that cheating?
Nope
