I know what you mean. I just take it one step at a time. Pick angle and this muting technique are my latest challenges. Got through all the chromatic, diatonic majors, minors, pentatonic scales and positions, note positions all around the neck, numerous studies and lessons. It's a long term project for me!
You're completely right. Same situation for me (and I played the bass for 29 years!). Be fast, be clean, know the blues scale, the bebop scale, the hybrid picking, alternate picking, chicken picking, know your amp and pedals (so many pedals!), rake, bendings, tremolo bar, strange chords, improvisation, tapping etc. The good thing is I'm not a pro, I can take my time, have fun and make exercises in the evening, in the morning and in the weekend. At least I'm never bored! :)
IdyllMusic as an advanced acoustic and intermediate electric just take it slow. Don’t overwork yourself. If you practice each thing for 10-20 min a day you’ll eventually learn the right habits without thinking too much
It's amazing how much your videos have leveled up since you posted this seven years ago. On another note, it may be a cheat, but I recently had to record a palm muted part and the high E string kept ringing out. So I just removed it. It's not a good longterm solution, but it did the trick.
Great information, and well presented! I remember long time ago as a kid I would think that needing to mute would be like cheating or an indication of not being able to play precise enough. How wrong I was! I´ve since learned to use the technique for chords, and that just opened the whole world to me. I never ventured much into soloing, and only now realize muting is a key thing for sweet clean soloing as well. I would always have problems with noice coming off the bends. My forefinger needs to learn to come to rescue! Actually this also explains why it is usually hard to see from videos what notes the artists play, because their fingers seem to always be all over the strings. Now we all know why, so obvious!
Wow Paul, I've been subscribed to you for about a year now but this is the oldest video I've seen. You've come so far with your editing and presentation, makes me excited for what the future of this channel holds. Keep it up man!
I've been playing guitar for 20 years and I only now realise I don't do this! Going to spend tomorrow going through all Paul's early vids to see what else I forgot to learn! Plus I will now be referring to my G&L as an electro guitar from now on.
Keeping strings muted while trying to solo on electric, especially with gain up, is tough for me. Will try this technique using fret hand index finger as trying to use right hand to mute doesn't work for me very well. Thanks, great lesson and playing. You make it look easy!
I think it's vital to have a clean sound, it's the most important thing to me... do you have some exercises for that? I mean, some patterns I could use to practice my 'muting' technique.. Thank you, really good videos.
I was playing for 5 years but I found myself stuck in like the same level of playing until I got into John Frusciante, his playing I just fell in love with & he taught me like a style to mute the stings I don’t want to be heard & that shot my playing level dramatically so I thing this is one of the most important lesson for guitar players especially if lead is your aim
very very great tutorial. Thank you! I have been working on this idea once I saw Paul Gilbert talking a lot about using the thumb for muting, but learned some additional great tips in this. Thank you!
I just want to say. That orange telecaster is reminding me of that miranda afternoon i sipped coke on a sleazy summer with freedom just a mile beyond me. Its just too good.
Muting is probably the hardest thing I have come across while learning. It is so counterintuitive, you are trying to touch the string after you have played it. For other beginners like me, you can try practicing "Killing in the name of" by Rage Against Machine. You have to mute a lot in that song to make it sound clean.
Being unable to find the proper ways to mute my strings caused me so much frustrations for so many years that it's one of the leading factors for me to stop playing guitars...
Hey Paul, good morning. I've been struggling with unwanted string noise (especially bending,) so this will really help thanks. Although I had to giggle slightly, because I think it's probably the noisiest video you've ever done.. that electrical buzz! This is not an insult btw. This was a long time ago and the quality of your video production now, is easily some of the best out there. But this did make me laugh considering the title. just a bit though.. sorry 😉
I played acoustic for a year and finally got a electric guitar and I just realized my muting is so bad and causes rlly messy sounds, I'm going to try mastering this now
The trick of muting the chords during a bending with your index is very very useful. I didn't know that. But I'm not able yet to hit the six strings and letting play just one of them. Very hard, not so easy.
I found the delay between the wide shot camera and the closeup fretboard camera to be disorienting. Other than that, fantastic tutorial! Thanks very much; I really want to learn how to use this technique for songs like Can't Stop.
Can you please make a video or give me advice on how to avoid the "accidental pull off sound" when lifting fingers from the strings? Everything sounds like shit because of it and its the same all the time. Anyone else have the same problem?
Hi great video I got a question, I play only with my fingers (classical guitar style) and I have not found a way to mute the strings when I am playing single notes up the fretboard (from 6th string to 1st string), tried with the thumb of my right hand as I go up the strings as bassists do but reduces speed and my thumb finger nail got stuck, do you know about a way to mute in that case?
Unfortunately, some of us can't use the left thumb to mute because we have ridiculously short fingers!! In my case, a surgically repaired left thumb that is short and doesn't bend properly makes that technique somewhat useless.
I've been playing for ten years now and I noticed a few months ago just how sloppy my playing actually is. my only fear is that to do this correctly I'll have to relearn the guitar entirely since I've been playing a certain way for so long now
Alright this is my beginning i have learned only one solo (i was a pianist before) and i did realise that i am doing alot of things wrongs and my playing isnt clean and there are alot of unwanted sounds i make.So i think i am having a good start.
Hi Paul, when you are strumming all the strings, what is the best way to mute all of the strings *except* for the high E string? If you wanted to play singles notes on the high E while strumming.
What about muting bends properly? I get 'muted noises' when releasing strings higher up on the neck after a bend. The strings are palm and fret-hand muted, but the bend release still sounds. It's like unwanted ASMR.
With Cant stop, i find that when muting the E and A string, i am triggering harmonics with my thumb. How should i be muting? Is two points of contact on a steing when left hand muting the only sure fire way?
I hope someone can help me out but I miss something regarding the part where paul is explaining the single notes. So he chooses to play the A with his index (7th fret on D string) . You are supposed to hear only this note, right? Then he says you have to fret down the 4th string with your ringfinger. This does imply you will play and hear not the A but the B (9th fret of D string). What am I missing here? Sorry for my ignorance..
He misspoke, you mute the 5th string (A string) with your ring finger. The 6th string (low E) is muted by your thumb. Your index finer plays the D string, and mutes the G, B, and high E strings
Playing fast passages with power chords and palm muting just one string.. I'm still a tiny confused on how because sometimes I end up playing the string below it above it as well and that's unwanted sound. Is that just something to practice over time. Being able to pick only one string at a time in a fast passage like that (ex.Intro to the song savior)
Whenever I do a high E bend on like the 22nd fret, I'm always hearing the B and G string ring out now matter what I do. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I did the opposite and regret it. I thought by training to be a super precise player I won't have string noise not realizing string noise occurs without even remotely touching them.
What if you're playing natural harmonics while muting ? I mean sometimes gently toutching the strings can result in harmonics, which makes sounds too, even if it's not on the 12th, 7th or 5th fret there is still some noises
For a beginner like me this is what I am starting to work on now. There are just so many subtle things to learn on guitar sometimes it's overwhelming.
I know what you mean. I just take it one step at a time. Pick angle and this muting technique are my latest challenges. Got through all the chromatic, diatonic majors, minors, pentatonic scales and positions, note positions all around the neck, numerous studies and lessons. It's a long term project for me!

At least I'm never bored! :)
I'm glad I'm not the best because l couldn't learn anything then.
As an advanced player, it's still overwhelming...
IdyllMusic as an advanced acoustic and intermediate electric just take it slow. Don’t overwork yourself. If you practice each thing for 10-20 min a day you’ll eventually learn the right habits without thinking too much
It's commendable how many pains you go through to demonstrate every single facet of guitar playing. Real quality stuff, man.
Yo, the last "problem" section of the video, what is the song he's playing? I should know it, but I can't quite remember it lmao
Starting at 1:20
It's amazing how much your videos have leveled up since you posted this seven years ago. On another note, it may be a cheat, but I recently had to record a palm muted part and the high E string kept ringing out. So I just removed it. It's not a good longterm solution, but it did the trick.
This is by far the best lesson I’ve ever seen on TH-cam thank you so much for what you do
Great information, and well presented! I remember long time ago as a kid I would think that needing to mute would be like cheating or an indication of not being able to play precise enough. There's alot of proper picking hand muting also...
This is spot on, exactly where I am struggling at the moment. Thank you.
That's probably why you watched this Video in the first place i guess haha
Just kidding, i have the same prob atm, that's why i'm here 🤷🏼♂️
Sympathetic vibration is the culprit! Marvelous 11 minute lesson and demo.
7:08 as you see sometimes you gotta mute when youre not even playing as well :)
This guy is so chill, I totally can see 1m people enjoying him
This is what drummers like me who use guitar for writing NEED to learn. Once I put distortion on my electric it often sounds a right mess,Thanks Paul!
Keeping strings muted while trying to solo on electric, especially with gain up, is tough for me. Will try this technique using fret hand index finger as trying to use right hand to mute doesn't work for me very well. Thanks, great lesson and playing. You make it look easy!
How’s it been going? I play fingerstyle on electric so right hand muting is not so easy for me either 😂
I think it's vital to have a clean sound, it's the most important thing to me... do you have some exercises for that? I mean, some patterns I could use to practice my 'muting' technique.. Thank you, really good videos.
Laura Morales I also would like to know if you got in your Pantheon some exercises on this Topic, Paul.
Yes that!!
you could use every chord or note to practice this, dont make it more complicated
yes but 2 get good like Prince and Dave Grohl we need specific exercises from the Mr. Miyagi of guitar the legendary Paul Davids!
@@funkguitarworld1313 he mentioned playing through all pentatonic patterns with this, that is a great excersise
That was my major problem, it helped a lot. Thanks, you're awesome :)
Thanks a lot man....my strings were ringing while releasing the bends....ur technique helped a lot...
very helpful, thanks. I'm gonna have to practice these tips, I've always had trouble bending and catch the next string up
Omg, the single string “Cant Stop” was me in middle school i thought i was killing it
I was playing for 5 years but I found myself stuck in like the same level of playing until I got into John Frusciante, his playing I just fell in love with & he taught me like a style to mute the stings I don’t want to be heard & that shot my playing level dramatically so I thing this is one of the most important lesson for guitar players especially if lead is your aim
ugh those damn single strings are so frustrating. Thanks for this!
Salve, Paul. Aqui do Brasil assistindo todos os seus vídeos. Parabéns pelo Bom gosto nas suas aulas !
very very great tutorial.
Paul you’ve come a long way I’m just a few years. Cinematography and editing skills have gotten crazy good 🤙🏾
His dirty playing sounds cleaner than my sound

5:10 Just a timestamp for myself, scroll on
6:15 ring fing
7:20 index
9:00 bends
Can you make a tutorial for can't stop by the red hot chili peppers
theres a million online already
Should be studying right now.. but Paul your my guitar hero men you just helped me so well
Being unable to find the proper ways to mute my strings caused me so much frustrations for so many years that it's one of the leading factors for me to stop playing guitars...
Your skill comes from that epic beard
Can you make a video on picking techniques because that is my biggest issues
Hey Paul, good morning. I've been struggling with unwanted string noise (especially bending,) so this will really help thanks. Although I had to giggle slightly, because I think it's probably the noisiest video you've ever done.. that electrical buzz!

But this did make me laugh considering the title. just a bit though.. sorry 😉
Your channel is awesome. Very well explained! Thank you very much. You are very professional. Endless guitar knowledge.
For unison bends when you can’t mute the top strings with your index finger, how can you prevent unwanted noise? Thanks for the tips!
Thank you for the lesson. I needed that !
I found the delay between the wide shot camera and the closeup fretboard camera to be disorienting. Other than that, fantastic tutorial! Thanks very much; I really want to learn how to use this technique for songs like Can't Stop.
Just so utterly helpful! Thank you!!! Do you have a tutorial on palm muting?
It's an important topic. Proper muting with both hands. It takes a while to develop to execute naturally and subconsciously.
Great tips in this video!
That’s the first time I’ve had that bending trick pointed out. Hopefully I can use it (too many ingrained habits though I expect)
Exactly what I was looking for
Great Video
10:00-10:20
I love the way that sounds
5 years ago, dayummm
Your always helpful really to be honest most of my tutorial and exercise are yours since cant afford a guitar teach
You are a REALLY GOOD guitar player.
What a great lesson, thank you sir
Another great tip, many thanks.
Paul, I'm surprised you haven't covered right-hand palm muting (on the bridge), which I consider a basic technique on both acoustic and electric.
Awesome
Left hand is the key !
Can you please make a video or give me advice on how to avoid the "accidental pull off sound" when lifting fingers from the strings? Everything sounds like shit because of it and its the same all the time. Anyone else have the same problem?
amazing also have you a video on how to play green day holiday ? Cuz ur so amazing at playing it
thanks for this video, it's super helpful.
any tips for string muting when the index finger is playing the 1st (high e) string?
5:55 (just marking this spot for myself but if you're reading reading this have a nice day :> )
Holy shit! Chris Evans is teaching me guitar! Thank you TH-cam auto-play!
Great video, Paul, thank You. Looks like You need to work on synchronization between left hands 10:27 :))
What is the song played at :58?
Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers
So when playing lead single notes you should be muting unwanted strings all the time? Brilliant lessons by the way👍🏻😎👍🏻
Hi great video I got a question, I play only with my fingers (classical guitar style) and I have not found a way to mute the strings when I am playing single notes up the fretboard (from 6th string to 1st string), tried with the thumb of my right hand as I go up the strings as bassists do but reduces speed and my thumb finger nail got stuck, do you know about a way to mute in that case?
Can you make a video on how to create better tones on guitar multi effects processor?
Hi. My thumb is really short. How can I mute. I NEED to mute. Help me. Please!!!
Unfortunately, some of us can't use the left thumb to mute because we have ridiculously short fingers!! In my case, a surgically repaired left thumb that is short and doesn't bend properly makes that technique somewhat useless.
How do I mute strings when I play an ascending scale, like you did in the lead playing example with the 3 note per string pattern?
Use your picking hand, your hand must rest on the strings that are not played
whats the name of the first song you played
Class video.
Good up until the last one, where there was resonance on single note playing. How do you stop/mute that?
Maybe mention, you are also muting with the right hand ?
supergoeie tips! bedankt!
nice guitar playing!
+Vincent Cruz :) thanks!
I've been playing for ten years now and I noticed a few months ago just how sloppy my playing actually is. my only fear is that to do this correctly I'll have to relearn the guitar entirely since I've been playing a certain way for so long now

paul how do you mute all strings and bend just a single note? that done with the right hand muting or left hand? hope you got a point.
the chords are no problem...it's those single notes that I gotta woodshed.
Have you got it down yet? How long did it take?
Hi Paul, when you are strumming all the strings, what is the best way to mute all of the strings *except* for the high E string? If you wanted to play singles notes on the high E while strumming.
use anything except for your pointer finger to fret, I guess.
What about muting bends properly? I get 'muted noises' when releasing strings higher up on the neck after a bend. The strings are palm and fret-hand muted, but the bend release still sounds. It's like unwanted ASMR.
What’s that first tune you played, it sounds really medieval
lmk if you find it lmao, been bugging me for a while now
With Cant stop, i find that when muting the E and A string, i am triggering harmonics with my thumb. How should i be muting? Is two points of contact on a steing when left hand muting the only sure fire way?
What about unison bends?? All three fingers are taken and I can’t mute the strings

You're enlighting us about guitar like Gautam Buddha
What guitar is that first one?
playing the main lick from cant stop its a neverending battle for me. practice practice practice sighhhh lol and after that im gonna TRY snow
Whenever I do a high E bend on like the 22nd fret, I'm always hearing the B and G string ring out now matter what I do. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Any tips on muting strings while playing power chords? Like in Holiday.
touch with the tip of your indexfinger on the string above :)
Great tone... what pickups and amp/fx ru using? Thanks 👍
Okay, but what about for finger style. My guitar teacher has me playing in a position where I can’t palm mute at all
I did the opposite and regret it. I thought by training to be a super precise player I won't have string noise not realizing string noise occurs without even remotely touching them.
i've been playing for 5 years and it's embarrassing how i still can't get the intro part for holiday right because i never practiced it like this
I m not able to hold the B flat chord I had been trying for a long tym it doesn't sound right.. what to do?
Thank you Captain America!!!
Thanks Chris Evans
What if you're playing natural harmonics while muting ? I mean sometimes gently toutching the strings can result in harmonics, which makes sounds too, even if it's not on the 12th, 7th or 5th fret there is still some noises
Try to mute at few points, not just one finger
can using an acoustic instead of an electric make a difference?
my life in a nutshell . great video.
I missed you!
really useful
What's the song at 0:57?
Envy by who?
