The title is a reference to the fact that because of WW2 set Japan back to "square 0" and then Godzilla shows up in that moment of despair and utter low point just to cause even more devastation and pain, putting them lower than zero, -1

This movie is a veteran's nightmare.
Noriko's last words were, "Is your war over?"
This film says we should respect all the suffering veterans.
And the ejection scene. I was impressed.
Tachibana didn't want any more people to die on the planes he maintained.
    and
    Noriko's survival.
The word that came to mind was "perfect."
Do you know any other stories that are this perfect?

@aosantube1956 while this is likely my favorite movie of all time (this or everything everywhere all at once), I've experienced 2 video game stories that are much better than this despite minus one having a great story.
NieR:Automata and NieR replicant have the best stories and casts of characters I've ever witnessed. Especially NieR:Automata.

This movie was not only a master class in film making, but social media marketing. If they had spent anything on a marketing budget and run some TV ads, and distributed it to more theaters, I'm sure it would have made a couple hundred $million in the US alone. But even with word of mouth, this movie did amazingly well in theaters and became the most highly anticipated streaming movie ever.

Watching this in my movie theater was an UNREAL, UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE. Every time Godzilla roared and unleashed his atomic breath the entire damn building shook. When Godzilla was on-screen you didn’t just see and hear his power; you FELT it. It was like being in the presence of a god.

100%! Saw it first in IMAX and it was like you were standing face to face with the King of Monsters. His roar was so much better than the screechy Legendary version. It was positively thunderous, and you felt it in your whole body. But what was even more amazing was hearing the other people in the theater sniffling during the quiet scenes. That was powerful!

I believe that this is even better than the first Godzilla film from 1954. It is not fair to compare special effects with the technology changes since that time, however the human story in this one is just magnificent. Every major and minor character has a good story arc

Loved this movie when I went to see it in Dec....Fun thing for me was I had recently returned from a solo trip to Japan (to UK) just a few weeks earlier...And while on the return flight I watched a couple of Japanese subtitled movies..one of those being "Dr Coto's Clinic"....Then while watching "Godzilla Minus One" I realised I had see the actors before somewhere to remember I saw them in "Dr Coto's Clinic". Both Hidetaka Yoshioka and Ryunosuke Kamiki are main characters in the movie!...I was in Japan to see my favourite band LIVE for a second time..after flying out to Japan in Jan earlier in the year to see them...During my Jan trip I visited Shinjuku which has a hotel with the head on Godzilla hanging over the roof...It lights up and puffs smoke as I recall...You can book and stay in a room which has the balcony of the Godzilla head on it....I also stopped off at the Shin Godzilla statue near Hibiya Station during my hotel transfer day. (between Shibuya and Ariake)..During my second trip I stopped to take photo's of the Family Mart conbini store in Taishido which has a large King Kong model hanging on to the front of the store.

I saw the film three times at the cinema. The first two times was the colour version, the third the minus colour. And I have to say it was exceptional all three times. The four times Godzilla appeared were epic. The "Minus One" is that Japan after the second world war was reduced to zero due to the two bombs, and the carpet bombing. With the appearance of Godzilla, they were reduced to minus one. Meaning, they were lower than zero.

The destroyer Yukikaze that appears in the film was called the lucky ship because it survived many fierce battles during the Pacific War without any damage. After the war, it served as a repatriation ship, bringing many soldiers back to Japan. That story also strengthens my feelings about this film.
I was surprised by your commentary and reading your analysis, and I think that Americans seem to understand the message of the film more deeply than Japanese people.

I have been watching a bunch of reactions to this movie lately due to having recently gotten the 4k release of the movie and trying to get other people's perspectives on this movie, and that's how I only found this video now. It's nice to see a reaction from someone who already understands Godzilla, and some of the history of this time, and isn't confused by a lot of what they're seeing on screen
I skimmed the comments here and didn't see anyone mention this, but I wanted to offer a small correction to a couple things you said. The movie collection you showed at the beginning isn't all of the Toho movies. It is just the ones from what is known as the Showa era of Godzilla movies. There is also the Heisei (1984-1995), Millenium (1999-2004), and Reiwa (2016-present) eras. Outside of a few movies, the Heisei era movies are probably the most difficult to get a hold of (with English subtitles).
This leads me to the comment you made at the end about them killing Godzilla. There are actually a couple movies that they did kill him in it. I don't want to spoil which ones if you decide to dive in to the movies in the other eras, but know they're there somewhere.
If you do decide to dive in to the other eras and want a Godzilla movie that's somehow both stupid and yet fun watch Godzilla Final Wars. It's the movie they made for the 50th anniversary. If you want a couple good ones from those there are GMK (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack) or Godzilla vs Destoyah

In my opinion Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla are both much better than the Monsterverse Godzilla films, particularly the 2014 first attempt. It is not always about throwing money and special effects at a wall hoping it will stick. Actual story telling, timing of events and scenes, and emotional elements make movies work.
Godzilla's eyes in this movie have intelligence, unlike the Shin Godzilla version. The Godzilla in this movie is smarter and shows hatred of humanity which is reflected in the way they portrayed his eyes.

The movie is titled "Minus One" because after WWII, Japan was devastated and at its lowest. Knocked all the way down to zero, with them trying to rebuild... Then Godzilla shows up and makes things even worse, taking Japan from zero to minus one.
Your reaction is probably my favorite so far because you really caught on quickly to the meanings and emotional weight for the characters and what Shikishima's story arc had to be. Fun fact, it is revealed in other related media material that Tachibana, the mechanic, really wanted to help save lives, but he was stuck fixing up planes, just for the planes and pilots to fly out and sacrifice themselves as kamikazes. Tachibana put in the ejection seat because he too was tired of people dying when they could have lived instead.
The only time I came close to tearing up in another Godzilla movie was when I was watching the original 1954 movie. When you see people dying of radiation poisoning and the mother telling her child that they were about to reunite with their father (who died during the war) soon, just before being crushed underfoot by Godzilla. Those are the moments when Dr. Serizawa realizes that for the sake of everyone else... he has to use the weapon he developed on accident and sacrifice himself so one one else could replicate the weapon to use on anyone or anything else ever again.

Have you read James Stokoe’s Godzilla Half Century War comic? Gorgeous art and a brilliant story about one man’s repeated encounters with Godzilla over several decades. Would make for an excellent movie, similar to the plot you seemed to be predicting early on here.

Anyway, loved this movie, one of the few I believe lived up to the hype but I know I’m also heavily biased. 🤭 This is the first movie I’ve ever felt scared of Big G, I saw it in theaters and brought my Mom and gosh, chills and awe the whole time. I actually felt for the humans so bad as he massacred the people and the atomic breath was stunning. Ugh, love this movie so much!

Becayse the others works more as a lazer, por example a wedding torch on the same place while more powerfull than a small oyrotechnic will not produce the same level of area destruction but the torch will always be more powerfull.

So I shelved it for a week out of pure frustration. Then it has to go through the TH-cam algorithm and re-edited when it’s blocked. That all takes time and resources.

  • @antzuprising

Okay so why is it called minus one? I've seen this question come up many times so allow me to explain. When Japan was destroyed, it was reduced to ground zero and/or they had nothing. Now you include Godzilla into the mix who destroys Japan even more furthering what little Japan had and what's lower than 0? -1. Thus Godzilla -1.0.

But those captions are basically the captions of what the english dub actors are saying, and in multiple situations they ruin the impact of lines
Like the final line of the film, in ur version she said "can this war of yours finally be done" which sounds like shes kinda iver his war and wants him to grow up, but the real line is "is this war of yours.. finally over? Like asking his permission to love him basically

BUT later when he destroys Tokio the beast looks like another one, TALLER, with a smaller head !!! !!! Is this part of the fun or what, from earlier japanese productions, when the beast floats in the water just the huge head it looks very plastic, ha ha I mean I dont really mind, the movie has a beautiful message and well written, you dont get many of these flics Godzilla is a legend...
