The same sort of rivalry banter happened in Cardiff with the Millennium Stadium. The construction workers who were putting the final bits in place were English lads from Bristol. They painted a St.George's cross on a white bed sheet and fixed it to the top. So the first flag to fly over the stadium was the England flag. The overall cost of the Barrack Road demolition/construction and installation and the Bronze statue itself came to £250K??? (No idea where the £250K figure came from, but it keeps getting repeated in the press so folk assume it to be correct - It aint! About half that figure at the most ie £120K) Cracking video Eddy, keep it up!

Might be a simple move by our owners to give Shearers a lot more respect than for it to be on the site where toilets once where but it's a move that will get the backing from everyone.
I'm not bothered about Shearer's statue, or Sir Bobby Robson's for that matter. The only people who should have been immortalised in concrete at St James'Park are Kevin Keegan, Joe Harvey and Jackie Milburn. I regard Wor Jackie as the 'true' greatest goalscorer in our history because he did'nt have the luxury of taking penalties in their sackloads, and there was only the League and the FA Cup competitions back in the day. When the contract was up, Ashley changed the name to honour all our no.9s supermac etc. But also save the club money. It was the right thing to do. I tend to think the nine looked a bit classier, that branding looks tacky. For the statue, i dont really care that it wasn't on stadium land, Milburn's was on Northumberland street for years. As far as I understand it, the land is owned by the City Council but all the stadium and infrastructure is owned by the club hence why Ashley could be spiteful about the statue.
