  • In this video "Graphite vs Glass BFS Rods: BFS Trout Rods (BFS Trout Fishing)" Hobie-Wan Kenobi talks about what situations he uses fiberglass rods and graphite rods for BFS trout fishing.
    Digitaka Discount Code: F5K
    *this video speaks in general terms and compare rods in same price point.
    Graphite (carbon) BFS rods are common and generally a safe bet in all price points. Rod makers have been able to incorporate complex tapers into graphite blanks to make them very responsive when casting and twitching lures then have more give when a fighting a fish. Sensitivity is another strong point. That plus the faster actions is better for fishing jigs, plastics and other "feel" lures.
    Fiberglass rods have a smooth feeling that casts nice and cushions the surges of fighting trout very well. Those same properties can make twitching lures, especially in fast current, a little less responsive. Fiberglass rods generally load up with less force so, short casting is generally easier. Be very careful purchasing a "cheap" BFS fiberglass rod, they can be VERY sloppy when casting and have little lure control.
    Line choice does play a factor in rod action. With these rods being shorter and having less power, the stretch of mono or the lack thereof with braid can really alter the way a rod acts. Braid will "give" the rod more power / make the rod taper "faster". Mono will do the opposite. These variables are small but, may matter in your type of fishing.
    The Jackson Kawasemi Rhapsody is at Bait Finesse Empire: baitfinesseempire.com/product...
    Being collapsed to 19.7", this rod should be great for hiking into headwater trout creeks. The ability to keep the reel and lure rigged up while collapsing the rod is very convenient. It has a nice taper for a 4 piece telescopic rod and should be well suited for hardbaits and also using soft plastics.
    This is the first rod I have had with "floating guides". When collapsed, most of the guides slide down the blank to stack together. When the blank is deployed, it is easy to slide the guides into place and be ready to fish.
    Rod Length: 4’7″
    Pieces: Telescopic - 4 Section (19.7″ Closed Length)
    Power: Light
    Action: Fast
    Line Rating: 6lb MAX - 0.6 PE MAX
    Lure Rating: 8g (1/4oz) MAX
    Guides: 6+1
    Rod Weight: 88g (3.1oz)
    Composition: 98% Graphite / 2% Glass
    The headwaters of rivers and mountain streams are often found in rugged environments covered with brush, making it difficult to comfortably fish. In such places, anglers can find gorgeous native trout, and often the larger ones are hiding in the most difficult-to-reach pockets. Casting a lure to those tight “unreachable” points, and attracting mountain fish, for many, is the absolute pinnacle of bait finesse fishing pleasure. However, it is also true that clearing obstacles and fighting against the terrain can be the most stressful situations for anglers.
    With this in mind, Jackson designed the Kawasemi Rhapsody Rod Series to be free from stress in these difficult situations. Carefully selected lengths that allow you to concentrate on your cast without being distracted by the surroundings of overhead tree branches, boulders, and grasses. Furthermore, by designing the actions of these rods so that each model plays a different role, anglers can fine-tune their techniques and diversify their lineup of useable finesse lures.
    By utilizing Fuji SiC-S guide rings, the casting ability of lightweight lures, which are often used in trickle-style waters, has been further improved upon. While heavier sinking minnow lures with a fast initial velocity can be cast further by allowing line to smoothly pass through the guides after release.
    Sometimes, the surrounding cover and terrain require that the angler cast with a sidearm or underhand technique to clear a branch, but with the support of this rod, it is possible to deliver the lure accurately every time with ease.

      I tend to buy higher end reels and cheaper rods. I have a majorcraft days, tsurinoya kendo. Tsurinoya elf trout. A proflex 2 and a Chinese glass rod that I’m really impressed with. I don't care what the price tag is, if it works, it works. The TSU Ares is great for back creek brook trout and is my favorite rod for that fishing. Isn't the most versatile rod though.

      @@HobieWanKenobi I’ve found the tsurinoya rods to be awesome for the price. The kendo is great for cranks due to the action being slightly slower. The elf is slow action but still sensitive due to it being carbon and at over 6ft great for longer range work, the proflex is xfast and brilliant for soft plastics. Especially hopped across the deck. Can’t really go wrong with them as far as I can see.

    Great video. I think the whole terminology for describing a rod’s attributes needs a revisit:
    Fast and slow should only be used to describe the recovery of the blank (ie carbon fast, glass slow), but then discerning between carbon blanks could be problematic (measure in milliseconds?). Taper should be described as short (currently fast) or long (slow). These are more accurate. Power ratings? Well that’s a bit tricky, but maybe just stick to line class and/or casting weights.
    I’m interested to hear what others think.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting point of view. People saying "medium heavy action" really arent saying anything. I know what they mean but, it adds to the already murky system of rod ratings.

    Have you noticed any difference in number of lost fish between glass, glass composite (the silver creek glass progressive) and carbon rods?

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's usually moreso matching the power of the rod to the fish. Using a rod with too much power regardless of material tends to lead to more fish getting off. I will say most times, glass keeps fish pinned better. That is especially true in fast current. The Tsurinoya Ares I use a lot for brook trout is solid carbon so, it bends somewhat like glass.

    What length would you recommend, im planning to buy solid carbon rod for my UL set with braided line, mainly fish for snakehead and bass
    And also, ive never fish for trout cause theres no trout from where i lived, i believed that trout had a thick mouth, unlike bass with super thin mouth where you can hook up super easy, why people use slow action super soft rod for trout fishing when its harder to hookup?

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bass get a better strike on lures. Trout tend to swipe at lures so, a softer rod helps the trout take the lure into it's mouth better. Fishing I'm a stream, there is current and other factors that require more cushion to prevent the trout from shaking the lure loose.

    Nice video! I think the only difference of carbon fibers vs. glass fibers are modulus and maximum stretch / tensile yield. And as you said, there’s different modulus glass fibers, Quarts S-Glass may be strongest one. But carbon has modulus over glass, and therefore it’s a lot of easier to do faster blank from carbon than glass. Rod action (how much parabolic action) is in my opinion more related to rod taper than material. Solid blanks are usually more parabolic action and glass is usually more parabolic action, but I have one solid glass blank, which is not parabolic action at all. I have more parabolic action solid carbon blanks, and I have more than that parabolic action tubular glass blank…So rod action is in my opinion principally taper -related. After all, in my stream fishing solid carbon short rod (Tsurinoya Ares / Tsurinoya Trout Master) works really good. Trout Master is better in case of 2+ gram lures. It’s solid carbon, and action is something between common carbon rod action and common glass rod action. Relatively mild taper + solid blank allows it to bend almost parabolically, because stretch doesn’t grow too much in any point of blank. Btv, are you going to get those glass rods you using to shop of BFS emperium? And that was good point to leave front hook away from minnow, to get lure hooked deeper in to mouth. Actually realizing that, front hook of small minnow is more ore less useless. Maybe to replace it by 2 spilt rings, similar weight than hook, and to create sound.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good input! The tapers of rods is a complex science and that is what makes expensive rods often times better. Those small details adding up to add to performance.
      As of now, BFE will not be stocking the glass rod I am using.
      For hook placement, I do the front hook point toward to lip when fishing waters with less snags. I use lures with hook point face rear or no front hook in areas with a lot of logs and such.

Only used them with Flourocarbon so far . The Resilure is a faster action than the Trout Smith and both enjoyable to cast . The Resilure has a glass piece inserted into the joins where as the Trout Smith doesnt and just slots over its self . Both great rods but the Trout smith is more sensitive to me . Not sure if its the one being S andthe other E glass blank that makes the difference or if its to do with the glass inserts in the S blank . The Trout smith is a much softer rod and slower action so you would think it would be the least sensitive . But its not the case . Thinking about it though , I used 2 different fluorocarbons so maybe one has more stretch than the other . More testing needs to be done . They are definitely stream rods and i get more distance with less effort with my carbon rods . Considering getting the Major Craft FineTail Glass next or the Tenryu Rays Spectra RZS51LL-BC Casting rod . The addiction is real and not for the faint hearted .
