How to Fish Rapala Jigging Raps for Walleye Through the Ice

  • When forced to fish vertically and with limited mobility, it is only logical to have a bait that can cover as much water as possible. Horizontal lures like the Rapala Jigging Rap cover a larger area under the ice through their lateral darting motion. This tends to call fish in from greater distances and trigger bites when vertical presentations fall short.

      Hi Pat, great to hear! From the sounds of it, the lakes are crazy busy with Covid and Canada being shut down. Should be an experience -- always a fun and productive time on the water/ice with Mr. Roach! Good luck and say hi to him from the boys at Wired2Fish.

      I use the Damiki righ during the winter to smash the smallies during the winter. I've been tinkering with change up baits for those schools. This might be one to try.

      @@Wired2Fish Sweet! I bought one years ago... never took it out of the package as I didnt know what I was gonna use a stout rod for with a finessey spring bobber that just sinks from the weight of a #5 jigging rap. I suppose an up bight can be seen. I'll mess around with it this week. Thanks!

    What size jigging rap do you use in the winter?

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dawkins Gaming. Depends on the species, size of the fish in the body of water and their overall mood, but here are some good general recommendations.
      1) Ice fishing walleyes: #5 is the go-to for the maximum number of bites. It's the right blend of size/profile to appeal to the widest range of fish moods. This doesn't mean you shouldn't try a #7 or #9 as Brad Hawthorne discusses in this video:
      cms.sportsline.com/content/article/6ebd049c-20f5-4401-afcd-9e19efde6e1d/version/us
      2) Ice fishing crappies and perch: #3 is the best all-around. It'll also catch its fair share of walleyes. Step down to a #2 if they seem interested in the bait but not biting. A reduction is size can be all it takes to coax neutral to negative fish.

      Take this info on how to fish the jig and put it to work using any of the horizontal gliding jigs on the market. Yes, he is a Rapala guy, but the working of the jig part to elicit strikes is excellent content. Here are a few competitor jig models too, all will work: 1) Northland Puppet Minnow, 2) Phantom Lures Tilly Jigging Lure, 3) Custom Jigs & Spins Rattlin RPM Minnow

      I had more luck aggressively jigging this rap than I did with a minnow
